Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
Welcome to Belgium, welcome to Ghent! Very objectively speaking Ghent is by far the most beautiful city in Belgium, arguably even in the world. The riders will see so for themselves today, as the start and finish of the Omloop is in Ghent, as usual. Sam Bewley, who won three of the last four editions won’t be participating and neither will Kris Boeckmans, winning the Omloop in 2017. Vanspeybrouck, winner of the Omloop in 2015 when it was a three-day race will also not participate. His teammate Danny Summerhill however, who won the first stage of that special 2015 edition, is the only former winner (or at least kind of) participating.
Name | FLA | STA | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Summerhill | 78 | 76 | 72 | 83 | 70 | 73 | Trentin | 74 | 76 | 71 | 81 | 75 | 76 | Zepuntke | 72 | 79 | 72 | 81 | 72 | 65 | Vanmarcke | 76 | 77 | 72 | 80 | 70 | 72 | Daniel | 73 | 76 | 76 | 80 | 76 | 72 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 80 | 74 | 80 | 72 | 71 | Bakari | 57 | 56 | 53 | 80 | 59 | 57 | Machado | 69 | 72 | 67 | 79 | 62 | 61 | Ferreira | 73 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 71 | 69 | Richardson | 71 | 68 | 68 | 78 | 60 | 61 | Bush | 74 | 75 | 73 | 78 | 71 | 73 | Orue | 69 | 77 | 70 | 78 | 53 | 58 | Moulingui | 74 | 71 | 71 | 78 | 65 | 68 | Breen | 77 | 72 | 72 | 78 | 73 | 72 | Chatarunga | 72 | 79 | 72 | 77 | 70 | 68 | Insausti | 70 | 76 | 73 | 77 | 57 | 66 | Zhupa | 75 | 78 | 74 | 77 | 74 | 68 |
First things first, there seems to be one clear favourite for the win, Summerhill Is clearly the best cobbler, and will try to be as successful as he was back in 2015. He will have an amazing domestique to do so, as he is backed by Machado, who might have a chance to profit from everybody looking at his leader. When Summerhill won last time, he was a part of Azteca – NBCSN, who have also brought two very decent cobblers: Chequan Richardson and German Anibal Orue.
Going back to the favourites, just below Summerhill we find Trentin and Zepuntke. If the best three cobblers go to a sprint between them, Trentin should be the one most likely to win. Zepuntke got a top-10 finish last year when the field was stronger, so he will definitely be hoping for more now.
Vanmarcke, Daniel and Vanbilsen are slightly less strong on the cobbles than the ones above them in the favourite’s list, but will definitely be competing for the win when their legs feel alright. Vanmarcke managed to grab a podium place last year, so just as Zepuntke he will be looking for more this time. While Vanbilsen is the man with the biggest lungs and voted ‘most likely to finish solo in the Omloop 2020’ in the Playboy edition of November 2019, Daniel is the best sprinter of the pure cobblers. Just as Trentin he would not mind a sprint between the favourites.
Bakari is also on the list, but it seems very unlikely for him to be able to follow the favourite’s until the end. However, like Justin Bieber once sang: “Never say never”. Other interesting names to follow during tomorrow's race are Ferreira, Bush, Moulingui and Breen.
Of course, there is always a possibility of a larger group arriving at the finish line together, in that case the following names could prove to be possible winners of the Omloop 2020;
| FLA | COB | SPR | ACC | Kristoff | 74 | 77 | 82 | 77 | Saber | 75 | 76 | 81 | 79 | Havik | 73 | 76 | 79 | 76 | Thwaites | 73 | 76 | 78 | 76 | Van Asbroeck | 75 | 74 | 80 | 78 | Kump | 74 | 73 | 81 | 80 |
Honourable mentions in this department are Nepomnyachsniy, Young and Edmondson.
The only thing left for me today is to share the startlist with you, the only thing left for the riders is to win the Omloop for their team.

A nothing race, however, we do have the best rider in the startlist in Ovsya, so there are some point scoring chances

First time a maxed Moulingui rides for the team.. looking forward to it and Top 10 would do me nicely looking at the start list. Thwaites an outside bet if we get a reduced bunch sprint as well

Has there ever been a rider like Bakari, with a difference of 21 points between the strongest and the second best stat (80 COB, 59 Spr)?
Summerhill should take that one, with his huge flat stat as a great advantage. Don't know the top cobblers' hill stats by heart, though, might have kind of an influence as well.

I will not make a points joke as that usually backfires, so go Zepuntke!

Cobbles!! Excited to be back at these races again
I don't expect much from this race and it's likely going to be a season of ups and downs on the cobbles. We're completely relying on every race being a bunch sprint for Saber to score us some points
Thanks for the preview Nemo

Ah, we made Playboy, probably our biggest achievement of late 2019!
it seems most of the top cobblers went here instead of Viano, but switching was never an option for me with Vanbilsen's weak MO stat.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Hoping for a good result from Breen Summerhill should be very hard to beat, but this could also be a good race for Trentin and Daniel.
Surprised to see Kump on the startlist. Bit of a gamble from Nordstrom.

Go Kump! Could be one for the power sprinters, but I also fancy somebody like Breen from a bigger group.

Aaah, hard to see how anyone can choose Omloop over Viana do Castelo but here you go - GVA ftw for Viano then!

Any points from Eric Young would be nice, but not expecting much to be honest.

From HQ schedules and seeing this startlist, it's looking like Viano is gonna end up being more of a CT race with VSB thrown in.

The B-Team cobbled squad here, so relying on a breakaway effort to win. Or some lucky sprint finish for Edmo. If we can get in the Top10 i'm very happy, Top20 is the expectation.
