I would've loved to get Munton, but when I saw what the price was going to I just couldn't get the funds together. Maybe next year is a different story
In the mean time, I am happy to have him on my team on loan |

Grand Ambitions
There's every chance that this will be the first season in which we don't have a rider in the Top 10 GC of any of the Grand Tours. But that doesn't mean we aren't looking forward to them!
After last year's successes, from breakaways and KoM hunting, we hope for some more aggressive riding this season, with three contenders for each race.
Giro | Vuelta | Tour | A Schleck | Godoy | A Schleck | Kirsch | Kirsch | Godoy | Wirtgen | Goos | Goos |
But in fact, the top aim for the Grand Tours this season is a different competition - and one we have never won at any GT, the best young rider competition.
Caio Godoy is the stand out ProTour rider this season for that competition, and will look to emulate Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier (2018) and Angel Madrazo (2012) in winning this competition in not one, but two Grand Tours in the same season.
It was oh so very tempting for him to go for the triple, but the potential of an Oomen wildcard, desire to take part in some other races, and the presence of Tom Wirtgen, was just about enough to decide against it. Wirtgen has the next two seasons to compete in this classification, but he can certainly be in the mix for the Giro this year - there could well be a number of riders of similar climbing ability present.
For Godoy, the terrain of the Vuelta makes that his primary target, but really, we do have high hopes for both races.

The chance of Godoy winning all three U25 jerseys would have been megaton. Good luck for the jersey and stage win hunting! Andy hopefully on fire and looking for payback a bit.

I was looking at your team when deciding what GT to send Gidich to and was hoping to avoid both Godoy and Wirtgen. Seeing that one of them is at each GT makes that a little bit pointless, was hoping each of them gets only one GT. I hope Gidich can at least give it a fight for the white jersey at the tour, but I doubt he can overcome the huge differences in mountain and recovery to Godoy by being better in other areas. |

PT Stage Race History
Dan Holloway stormed into the team history books by winning the Tour of Qatar in his Vesuvio debut.
It feels a good time to look back at our history in the PT stage race category.
This was our 15th PT stage race triumph, so just about averaging one per season (this being the 14th season!). It's the first since the 2016 Tour de Suisse; and the 5th non-Schleck win - the previous two both having been in Qatar as well, from Ben Swift in 2012 and 2015.
It's also the first stage race where an American has been our best rider. This makes USA the 20th nationality to have had the best Vesuvio rider in a race.
By best GC position only, this year's 9 PT stage races:
| Q | TA | PN | PK | N | S | DL | NE | T | 2020 | 1 | | | | | | | | | 2019 | 58 | 31 | 5 | 2 | 19 | 9 | 27 | 58 | 7 | 2018 | 20 | 26 | 2 | 3 | 11 | 2 | 22 | 26 | 17 | 2017 | 21 | 18 | 49 | 5 | | 5 | 9 | 36 | 7 | 2016 | 19 | 21 | 1 | 20 | | 1 | 18 | 75 | 18 | 2015 | 1 | 5 | 16 | | | 34 | 2 | 13 | 4 | 2014 | 3 | 5 | 3 | | | 1 | 27 | 25 | 7 | 2013 | 2 | 18 | 11 | | | 2 | 44 | 38 | 34 | 2012 | 1 | 1 | 11 | | | 5 | 11 | 17 | | 2011 | 24 | 25 | 11 | | | 3 | 7 | 59 | | 2010 | 40 | 53 | 1 | | | 3 | 3 | 67 | | 2009 | 5 | 8 | 12 | | | 1 | 10 | | | 2008 | | 10 | 2 | | | 10 | 11 | | | 2007 | | 1 | 4 | | | 6 | 5 | | |

Modern Classics
Three stage races that are firmly established as part of the PT identity now. Tour of Qatar can now be seen as our second most successful stage race. Tour of Northern Europe has always been more about stage wins than GC!

We return to Colombia as a PTHC race this year; listed here alongside the two newest regular PT stage races.
| | Vuelta a Colombia | | Praha - KV - Praha | | Ronde van Nederland | 2019 | | | 2 | Kneisky | 19 | Kneisky | 2018 | | | 3 | Kittel | 11 | Gastauer | 2017 | | | 5 | Kittel | | | 2016 | 20 | Suaza | 20 | Jungels | | | 2015 | 20 | Suaza | | | | | 2014 | 6 | Suaza | | | | | 2013 | 11 | Samwel | | | | | 2012 | 23 | Medvedev | | | | | 2011 | | | | | | | 2010 | | | | | | | 2009 | 12 | Iglinski | | | | |
Fond memories
Two stage races that didn't hold a PT license for long, but long enough for Frank Schleck. And before TONE we had the original ENECO Tour - we also had Fabian Cancellara then too!
| | Tour of Norway | | FBD Eire Tour | | Eneco Tour | 2019 | | | | | | | 2018 | | | | | | | 2017 | | | | | | | 2016 | | | | | | | 2015 | | | | | | | 2014 | 1 | F Schleck | | | | | 2013 | 14 | Gastauer | | | | | 2012 | | | 17 | Mehr-Wenige | | | 2011 | | | 1 | F Schleck | | | 2010 | | | | | | | 2009 | | | | | 5 | Cancellara | 2008 | | | | | 1 | Cancellara | 2007 | | | | | 7 | Millar |
Three more
Tour of Pologne is the only race we've ridden at least 3 times, where we've won one stage every time. Two other early PT stage races had reasonable back to back efforts from the same rider.
| | Tour of Pologne | | Vuelta a Asturias | | Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt | 2019 | 26 | Kirsch | | | | | 2018 | | | | | | | 2017 | | | | | | | 2016 | | | | | | | 2015 | | | | | | | 2014 | | | | | | | 2013 | | | | | | | 2012 | | | | | | | 2011 | | | 4 | Intxausti | | | 2010 | | | 6 | Intxausti | 4 | Pellizotti | 2009 | | | | | 13 | Pellizotti | 2008 | 16 | Medina | | | | | 2007 | 9 | De la Fuente | | | | |
One hit wonders
Stage races that only made it into the PT once.
2012 Tour of Oman: 2nd, Uran (By just 1 second!)
2015 Omloop Het Volk: 3rd, Schechter
2008 Tour of Britain: 4th, Millar
2009 Vuelta Burgos: 6th, Intxausti
2012 Vuelta a la Region de Murcia: 9th, Intxausti
2009 Tour Down Under: 15th, Freire
2010 Tour de Georgia: 31st, Wielinga
2016 SAA Tour d'Afrique: 66th, Mundle (41st for Reimer in 2018 PTHC)
One more for completeness
| | Criterium International | 2011 | 16 | Uran | 2010 | 20 | Kittel | 2009 | 8 | Millar |
Grand Tours not included. PTHC records listed where race was previously ridden as PT race. Not included PTHC-only races: Tour of East Java (2020), Barbados Cycling Festival (2019), Scandinavia Open (2019), Volta a Portugal (2019,2017), Balkans International (2018), Tour of Ukraine (2017). Also excluded all previous weaker-squad HC races: 2016 (Tour of the Czech Republic, Volta a Portugal), 2015 (Bayern Rundfahrt, 5 Jours de Dunkerque, Eneco Tour). Also excluded any years when these races were one-day races.

Wow great post. Who knew that Vesuvio had just a strong supporting cast of shadowy mountain goats with Mancebo, Cobo, Pellizotti, and Piepoli, or that you had Cance for some seasons.

Brilliant history post. Love all those statistics.
Really shows how consistent you have been over more than a decade even in years without big wins like 2019 the team then showed up differently by going for GT KoMs etc. So there is barely any season or even shorter period without huge success.
That said, from the statistics, you really finally should get a leader for TONE. NEVER in the top10...obviously not counting the original Eneco Tour from early times. |

With TONE, clearly I should have kept Cancellara for an extra season! Do at least have 8 stage wins there - which is the 4th best race for that tally.

The team may have gone to Luxembourg at the first opportunity, but yes, some interesting characters early on - in part by coming from Saunier Duval as a base.

Clearly Holloway didn't need much introduction, but you can never now how a rider reacts when starting with a new team and how age affects the performances. Vesuvio obviously fits him and he has showed that appropriately.

Brilliant post - i love to look at stats heavy post when you have such a long team history. Whats the most stunning is how you nearly always finish top 20 with your best rider with ToNE as the only exception where you dont get that sort of success. Im sure that many other teams (including mine) would show a lot less consistency than that when we would do such a post and we'd have far fewer years to show.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Team Points Stats - 2020 Update
Well, 2020 was the year of the American rescue for EA Vesuvio. Holloway kicked things off to a flying start, and other new signing Tejay Van Garderen very much picked up the baton and ran with it. Amongst other, higher scoring, rides - he also achieved the team's first Top 10 finish at TONE, as noted in the previous post. It is the first time since 2007 that our top scoring rider has achieved that in their first season of riding for us - and of course in 2007, that was rather by default!
The Stars and Stripes make a commanding entrance on to our flag points graph below then; which also highlights the increases from Wirtgen, van der Lijke, and Godoy - offsetting the falls from last season's top scorers.
Van Garderen offering us a stronger top scorer this season, while also notable amongst our history are the relative strengths of our 4th and 5th best scorers this time around.
Tom Wirtgen stepped up to be our 3rd top scorer, and leading Luxembourger - not for the last time you would suspect. It's the first season that a Schleck was not amongst our Top 3 scorers - or even the Top 8. 222 points for Andy in 2020, placing him 9th within the team. The Schleck dynasty has ended. Not only that, but Ben Gastauer too - after 7 seasons in our Top 4, he was down to 11th.
History - Top 4
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 2020 | Van Garderen | Holloway | Wirtgen | Van der Lijke | 2019 | Goos | Gastauer | A Schleck | Kneisky | 2018 | A Schleck | Van der Lijke | Gastauer | Kittel | 2017 | A Schleck | Keinath | Gastauer | Kittel | 2016 | A Schleck | Gastauer | Goos | Vanmarcke | 2015 | Swift | A Schleck | Gastauer | F Schleck | 2014 | A Schleck | F Schleck | Swift | Gastauer | 2013 | Swift | A Schleck | F Schleck | Gastauer | 2012 | F Schleck | Intxausti | Swift | Úran | 2011 | F Schleck | Úran | Intxausti | Iglinski | 2010 | F Schleck | Intxausti | Pellizotti | Iglinski | 2009 | F Schleck | Pellizotti | Cancellara | Millar | 2008 | F Schleck | Cancellara | Mancebo | Millar | 2007 | F Schleck | Mancebo | Gil | Piepoli |
History - Next 4
| 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 2020 | Godoy | Goos | Kirsch | Smit | 2019 | Van der Lijke | Kirsch | Wirtgen | Godoy | 2018 | Keinath | Reimer | Godoy | Goos | 2017 | Vanmarcke | König | Goos | Paterski | 2016 | Suaza | Van der Lijke | Aru | Paterski | 2015 | Suaza | Kittel | Schlechter | Slagter | 2014 | Kittel | Suaza | Kirsch | Paterski | 2013 | Samwel | Kittel | Caethoven | Medvedev | 2012 | Iglinski | Paterski | Mehr-Wenige | Hoogerland | 2011 | Kvasina | Ford | Kittel | Medvedev | 2010 | Perez F. | Sijmens | Kvasina | Wielinga | 2009 | Freire | Intxausti | Clesen | Hunter | 2008 | Sosenka | Medina | Ignatiev | Ventoso | 2007 | Millar | Cobo | Bertogliati | Wielinga |
Last season's tally of 5,208 points would have just about seen us survive this year, but with a higher score of 5,953, we ended up 10th. To look ahead though, with Van Garderen and Holloway both one year older, they may not even be at the team in the season to come - so who will step up to the top spot, and how many points will they score?

Post-Renewals
Available
Our approach with our puncheurs is pretty straight forward. While recognising that both are on the older end of the scale, we believe both still have competitive wages for their skillset. We can afford to keep them, but will be looking for offers also.
| | | FL | MO | HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CO | SP | AC | XP | Age | OVL | Wage | | | T. Van Garderen | 72 | 71 | 81 | 68 | 77 | 74 | 70 | 66 | 69 | 78 | Max | 33 | 78.6 | 450,000 | | | B. Gastauer | 67 | 69 | 80 | 64 | 75 | 67 | 65 | 57 | 65 | 73 | Max | 34 | 74.9 | 118,000 |
Leaders
Wirtgen maxes out and is now able to take more of a leadership role. We don't plan to make any of these 4 available, but never say never.

Core
Maxed out riders are in the slight minority across the team in general, but these four all have important roles within the team as it stands.

Talents
The push for new riders over the last couple of transfers brings the team to 11 Lvl 3 and Lvl 4 riders for this season. Just as well we are still PT then, and suffice to say, I won't be the team to look for loaning in 3/4 riders this time around. Maybe a sale would make my development plan easier? You tell me

Wirtgen is gonna do huge damage over the course of his career. I imagine training is likely in the coming years.
It was very weird to see Andy as a free agent. With both Schlecks gone from Vesuvio now, an era has certainly ended. But you have a really nice looking core with plenty of great talents going forward.

Love the look of your core leadership group, Wirtgen and Godoy are super exciting riders. Would love to see a trained Godoy one day give prime Alacorn a run for his money

Some very interesting names in that team without big big leaders though as van Garderen is now more of a "Koretzky-type" subleader. Still capable of scoring 700-1000 points though!
Caio Godoy almost landed at Festina a couple of seasons back - unfortunately I couldn't match your offer in the end - I sorely regret that. What a rider!
Tom Wirtgen ready to tare up the U25 competition. I suppose that will be a a new mini-Phinney in the years to come.
Btw - any reason you don't include the PRL stat in your list?
When looking at riders I would like in my team one name obviously stand out. A lonely french dude just eagerly awaits his chance to move on to Festina. I hope this can be achieved.
Definately weird not having any Schlecks anymore - but also good for the ones hoping to win a GT

On Schleck, well we might not be done with him yet.)! But opportunity is there now for a CT team to take a punt on him.
Godoy was a great late transfers move a few seasons back - well worth the small bit of training that was sacrificed to get him. And indeed, plenty of time available for him to get better too.
@SotD The tables are at the width limit for looking good so had to leave some out - and I don't have any Prologue specialists anyway. And I do indeed have a valuable Frenchman!

If you need to offload a few talents, I might help you as well It's clear who SotD is after - and of course he'd fit into my team nicely as well - but there's also at least one other rider who could be pretty useful already now and especially in the future

I'm definitely going to be getting in touch once transfers start, we've always done good business and had good convo's during transfers.
