Team Goals 2020

Tour de France - Top 3
i.imgur.com/Cta7K1C.jpg
After winning the 2018 Vuelta, and finishing second in the 2019 Giro, Silvio Herklotz will finally line up for the biggest cycling race in the world!
With barely any TT influence, this route suits Herklotz perfectly, particularly when supported by the strong TTT lineup that we assembled over the last years.
Despite this being the Tour de France, we hope to avoid the few potentially better stage racers that might not enjoy this route for exactly the same reasons why we do enjoy it, and then it's all about Silvio showing what he's capable of in the mountains.
The goal says Top 3, but we want to win!

Milan San Remo - Top 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/ptm_msr.jpg
Our annual MSR podium goal returns again for 2020, after achieving it for the first time last season!
Arnaud Demare is still aiming for the win in the only monument that suits our team this season, and neither him nor his support squad has gotten weaker, so we're confident to get it right again.

Ronde van Nederland - Win
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pt_rnl.jpg
Finally back to the hillier route, Arnaud Demare will try to repeat his 2018 overall win in the Netherlands against the usual suspects, minus Kump!
With an improved sprint train that should survive the first two stages to set him up there, and his usual puncheur qualities for stage 3 that were on display in a similar TdF stage last season, we're backing Arnaud for another top result here.

Pro Hallstatt Classic - Win
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pthc_hal.jpg
The closest Silvio Herklotz will come to a home race that he can realistically win, this unique classic close to the German border remains a win goal for us after a thrilling finale last season saw us only take the lowest podium spot.
With Silvio's hill training coming in quite handy in the expected explosive finale, plus last year's winner Spilak declining, we're confident to improve on that result.

ProTour - Top 3
In the wake of a tumultuous transfer season at many teams but Puma, it'll be hard to achieve a third consecutive podium result in the PT team rankings, despite how good Herklotz and Demare are.
For budget reasons and because we believe it'd send the wrong signal to a practically identical roster to aim much lower in 2020, we went for this optimistic goal regardless.

Quiet renewals at Team Puma - SAP

Compared to last year's (ultimately fruitless) efforts to keep the PT-winning squad together, the management at Team Puma - SAP had an easier time during annual renewals at their Herzogenaurach HQs in 2020.

No riders had to be let go due to cap constraints or unreasonable wage demands, and the wages negotiated are all well within the capabilities of the riders.

Silvo Herklotz as the winner of the PT individual rankings sees a deserved clean million on his bank account this season, as we weren't willing to risk anything with our star rider after such an achievement, which was a much-celebrated first for the team.
On the other hand, double stage and green jersey winner at the TdF Arnaud Demare scored significantly less than in 2018 due to his ridiculous Giro exploits back in 2018 and graciously accepted a decent pay cut that nearly offsets the wage increase of Herklotz to form our captain duo for another season, despite having been trained since the last time we negotiated.

A change in rider appraisal by the MGUCI meant Nikias Arndt felt worthy of a raise this off-season despite scoring 100 points less, but we're very much aware of his abilities on a good day and still think we can afford him at €150k.
The same change saw the trio of Jasha Sütterlin, Yuriy Vasyliv and Fabio Felline come in with lower demands which makes all three of them a decent bargain now, even though the Italian had a massive points drop for obvious reasons.

Colin Stüssi, our surprise rider of the season who helped us massively towards finishing third overall with his breakaway in Praha-KV-Praha among other great results, has maxed out as a good stage racer and therefore earns more than double this season, but still comes in at a reasonable €110k that we expect to be deserved by the end of the season.

Our two stars of the future, Filippo Ganna and Valentin Madouas, were well-behaved in negotiations and agreed to our standard wage cuts for talents, although especially Ganna's development will surely see him trend in the other direction again very soon.

Last but not least, the wage drops to minimum for our newcomers Lukas Meiler and Yikui Niu were expected, while the similar drops to €50k for our perpetual human "for sale" sign Paddy Bevin and especially our newly maxed super-allrounder Remi Cavagna weren't!
In particular the Frenchman impressed us with his modesty and will be an amazing bang for our buck going forward with his versatility.

Overall, we finished renewals with some spare cap space for the first time in years, and eagerly await the PostRenewals-DB to see which new talents to chase after this time around!
A detailed post on our transfer strategy with a more in-depth look at the transfer availability of our riders will follow soon.

Pretty good renewals for you I reckon. Herklotz going up to a million was deserved as you noted, but you cut in other places so it more than compensates. The wage cut on Felline is very nice too, though I fear the market will definitely be flooded with riders like him this season after last year.

I think it's likely we will talk this transfer season. About who? About what? With what success? I don't know the answers to these questions, only time will tell. Pfft

Hi, hello, just dropping in to congratulate Herklotz on his 1M. No other reason. Nothing that particularly jumps out to me on that riders list, no. Might check in with you again at some point anyway, just to have a little chat, we'll see Pfft

I'm confident he's still interesting enough for a sufficient amount of teams, there are very few riders around that can finish it off like he does, and in the end the final sprint is what separates 1st from 15th in a lot of races that suit these guys.

I think it's likely we will talk this transfer season. About who? About what? With what success? I don't know the answers to these questions, only time will tell. Pfft

Looking forward to figure out the meaning of life together!

I'm really happy to have you back in the game and it's nice to see you care about the little things like this right away! Smile

Not happy to see a "No" next to Stüssi, but well, that had to be expected Pfft

Might be interested in some other rider(s), though - we'll see Smile

Seeing a rider earning a million is quite... crazy. Almost a full CT budget. Well, I guess you don't even remember what CT means Pfft

I really can't make it any easier for you!

Well actually, we never even raced in CT as that division didn't exist back when I joined the game! And even PCT felt so boring that we decided to promote immediately. Pfft

Looking forward to hearing from you if that interest materializes. Maybe trade options will open up, or we can combine it with a loan the other way.

Well an unlikely next to Arndt isn't a no, but I know that it's code for "will require a big fee for Herklotz and Demare training" Pfft

Interested to see what you do with what I guess will be around 500k in cap space - there's plenty of talents I can see interesting you, but surely another leader must be a consideration?

Congrats on creating some cap space to play with.

Might be in contact during transfers Wink

A nice renewals for you. Herklotz under a mill is impressive.

Probably just Herklotz, Demare is good enough as is. Pfft
And who knows? Arndt for Cattaneo would save you a damn lot of cap space!

Interested to see what you do with what I guess will be around 500k in cap space - there's plenty of talents I can see interesting you, but surely another leader must be a consideration?

Both routes are possible, but would it really be Puma if talents weren't the main focus?
We do have set our sights on a few more established targets indeed though, since there doesn't appear to be a standout FA talent that fits our plans like Ganna and Madouas were in past transfers.

Thank you, and I'm always happy to talk all things German and beyond after having made good experiences in the past! Smile

Not quite under, but I'll take it, thanks! Pfft
You never know indeed, but good luck if we don't.

Wait what? So Herklotz isn’t good enough? The reigning Individual Rankings winner, whos two biggest rivals + Bewley just decreased?

I would certainly think Demare is the one who would benefit the most from training. Herklotz would probably raise his PpRD by a small bit, but also would lose racedays in general if trained... after this season also Madrazo is decreasing and then he’s the indisputed World Beater (as if he wasn’t already) :-)

Oh well, needing training money always opens for some interesting talks! :-)

Can we stop the talk of training Herklotz or Demare and focus on how good Nils Politt would look with some training? Pfft
