News in July

1 month to the return of the Pro Tour Banana

So, what are the chances of the cycling season finishing as planned this year? The new season calendar sees many races held into Autumn when many experts expect a second wave of Covid as well as the usual flu season.

I hope it can go as planned, but honestly I see further breaks in the season over the Autumn and Winter.

Froome won’t have his contract renewed.

He's probably going to Israel Start-Up Nation. It's going to be very interesting to see how he'll perform this year, hasn't got the chance to show his current level for a very long time.

It's already been confirmed that he will sign for ISUN. Will be interesting at the tour this year now. Will Ineos want him in the team if he's not the team leader, and may be a bit of a loose cannon in the team.

Wonder how he will get on now hes not on the sky/ineos program back to barloworld days?.anyway nice payday for him 15million euros for a 35 year old.

Seems like a risky deal for ISUN but like with Nibs and Bertie you pay for the prestige and publicity alone. Will be good to see how Froome performs there when he doesn't have the best riders in the world slaving for him.

yeah with this budget they can build up a team that can really contest for a TdF top spot...imo isn't worth for a single rider who you don't know how he will perform

Froome is still going to perform strong next year but my curiosity comes from the fact that I want to know how good can he be without a great supporting cast and how will he adapt to a new team that doesn’t have super domestiques like team Ineos

To be fair, I don't think the strength of his team will matter. I doubt the 2021, 36 year old father who suffered a life changing crash last year will be as strong as he was between 2012-2018.

Of course the strength of the team matters especially for someone who has relied on it for 6 years lol But we will know more in a few weeks when he starts racing again and see how strong he will be. Might as well be the numbers arn't good and Brailsfraud did the sensible thing and just didn't renew. In any case, both Ineos and Froome may become a bit more bearable to watch once this unholy alliance is dissolved.

Well no, because you could put Froome in the strongest team in the World, but he's no longer going to win the tour. Therefore the team is irrelevant as Froome is not at the same level as he was 2+ years ago. In 2018 Thomas was stronger than him, if he had raced last year both Thomas and Bernal were stronger than him. It's fairly obvious ineos didn't renew because they know he's no longer a team leader and so weren't going to give him a new contract on a team leader salary.

He's been signed by ISUN to raise their profile. I don't think he's expected to go there and win the tour, even by ISUN.

Literally says he wants to win his fifth tour. I have treated Contador as a contender until the last race, I also do that for Froome and like any rider he needs a strong team around him.

In 2018 Froome had already won the Giro and got third in the tour, an achievement that hasn't been done by many in recent years (having a podium in both the Giro and the Tour), only Dumoulin has done that in the same year, with a second place in both as well. I'm not sure if Thomas had won the Tour if Froome were as fresh as he was at the start.

So I wouldn't say that Thomas actually is a better rider (at least, before his crash last year. We don't know how good the post-crash Froome is as he hasn't raced yet on his peak-form.)

I don't think we actually have any evidence of this. In 2018, Froome had the Giro in his legs. And in fact, he did better than most other recent superstars who have tried the Giro-Tour. Remember Contador in 2011? So if we're judging skill level on that, it makes no sense imo.

Whether or not he is the same at 35 or after the crash is obviously to be questioned. He's probably not. But we can't say that as though it's a fact with evidence. We haven't actually seen him lose to those guys in big races while healthy and on form. You are probably right, but I'm not going to write him off until I see it with my own eyes.

Honestly, Froome vs. Sky is a pretty fun narrative. I have no idea who to root for, since my hatreds for them were so tied together. I'll just be hoping for drama. Pfft

Yeah, I guess the Giro/Tour double in 2018 is a valid point.

However Ineos know what they are doing and have the ability to know what level Froome is at without him having to race. Apparently the reason he didn't re-sign is because Ineos couldn't guarantee he would be sole team leader. Ineos clearly recognise they have stronger riders than him in their team, and better options for the tour. That wasn't the case pre-crash, when he was undisputed team leader (2018 Tour excepting).

His level will have dropped. Age alone will see to that (He will be 36 when he rides the tour for ISUN. The oldest tour winner EVER was 36, and that was in 1922), let alone the fact he suffered a major, almost career ending, injury last year and has hardly raced for the last 12/15 months.

Contador retired at 34, having not finished on the podium at a grand tour for the 2 seasons prior to that.
