@roturn: not entirely sure you get to complain this much looking at where Groenewegen stands in the individual rankings Pfft

Just about that race here. Wink

Surely can`t complain about Groenewegen in Qatar or Zardini in general for example as it was overperformance just like Vesely here is underperformance.

All season until now, I am surely not complaining.

Ouch, that's a little disaster right there from Swift. Really hoped he finally would start performing on a consistent level, especially with all other "top sprinters" missing, but no. That's one very clear miss. We just need to forget that one as quick as possible, and then we can't put a foot wrong on the remaining flat stages.

Looking forward to see if the hilly stages coming can give us any hints and give some gaps between the top three favourites for the overall. Hopeully we'll get some nice racing to follow Smile

5 stages and we've done nothing so far. Not looking great

Well it really does look like Herklotz is going to be a few steps ahead of everyone else this Giro, but it was to be expected.

Gesink was looking sharp enough to take stage 4 and was mostly hurt by his positioning there, which makes me hope he's going to be at his best by the time the riders hit Florence for the TT. For now though, that hilly trifecta is going to be really interesting to watch, and I'm hoping Gesink doesn't accumulate too much gap from Herklotz and Spilak (and I have no reason to believe he should with that 82 HI) so that he can still get a few days in pink.

Thanks roturn for the reports!

That's an interesting custom DB you have there!

No gaps, but good to see our climbers in the top 35 at least. Somewhat promising for the next stages.

Herklotz looking great.

Relentless!!! Shock
But still too close for comfort, perfectly depicted by the gap to Spilak on the line of yet another tight sprint battle. We will not always be this lucky, and I cherish these moments.

Yet again this Giro, this means Herklotz reaches the magical number of 1 stage win per 3 career GT stages, in the form of 9/27 now!

To expect any more this Giro would be presumptuous considering how this has already been a beyond perfect week 1 that I'm still struggling to comprehend.
I think we might not even have to win this Giro to be the best scoring team at the end if we can just remain consistent, and especially if we stay in the lead until the first mountain stage. That is the primary goal now.

Speaking of, we are already reaching a gap to Gesink that might even suffice in the TT on a good day, but at least Spilak will certainly be as motivated as humanly possible to finally get the better of us tomorrow and set up a tense TT battle, on a similar but surely harder finish.

Do not get complacent! We gotta continue to put everything into this maglia rosa.
Every day matters. Every day could be the last.

Well, we're defending our pseudo-white, but Dall'Oste is a shade of the rider he was
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Just go away.

Good to see Van Poppel finally doing something. And coming pretty close to a stage win while at it as well.

Herklotz is Herklotz, too bad he is on the wrong German team...

Very suprised by Henaos good results, I hope he can keep this form when the real mountains come

matt17br
Clearly a bad day for Gesink indeed, no gap is great news but he really shouldn't be finishing all the way down to 14th in stages that suit him like this one, let alone behind a teammate. Considering Herklotz' and Spilak's superiority, I'm left hoping that they don't contest tomorrow and Gesink can maintain this distance up until the morning before the TT.

Thanks roturn!

The first human day for Silvio, it seems.
Gotta thank Generali for taking the win and even more bonus seconds away from Spilak! Pfft

Nikias Arndt with a great ride on a perfect stage for him though, keeping Herklotz protected and still showing a great sprint effort for 5th. 4th and 5th add up to the same points as 3rd, but I wish they gave bonus seconds too...

Obviously that leaves us rather vulnerable - albeit still in the valuable lead - going into the TT, 18 seconds to Spilak means I have to hope for the maglia rosa boost to kick in and pray for a similar surprise to last year's Vuelta TT win over Tenorio, Phinney et al that kickstarted the GC victory bid.

Now I definitely expected before the race started to be down in 3rd after the TT, but besides the GC implications, we would lose out on at least three days worth of maglia rosa points and restore the initial favorites order, both things I'd very much like to avoid after this week 1.
We need to take the momentum into the mountains.

But first, we have the very interesting "flat" stage 8 coming up, surely a prime sneaky Top 10 opportunity for Herklotz, maybe even more depending on how it's ridden.
It could also go to a breakaway if nobody feels confident in their odds though.

Ollfardh
A few seconds lost, but no disaster on a hilly stage with 74HI. Still in white tomorrow. I do hope we'll join the breakaway at some point though.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Wow legendary effort from Teuns, super happy about that stage win, pretty sick how Ciccone set it up too! This way my boy takes away I think 4 bonus seconds from both Spilak and Herklotz, which helps hide Gesink's weakness for the time being - something that is hopefully going to change over the next couple days. Thanks roturn!

Another hilly stage survived by Henao Grin

Mixed feelings about that sequence of hilly stages. On the one hand I'm very happy that the team is so visible and active, helping Formolo get some decent stage results and putting 5 riders in the GC top 25.

But on the other hand it's a bit sad to see Ginanni relegated to a domestique in hilly stages that he could win in the past. Even with the increased importance of MO in such stages it's a strange choice to let him work for Formolo so much considering the fact that he (Ginanni) actually does still get listed with the pre-stage favorites (stage 6 for example). And Formolo is not even a top favorite, so why not let Puma, Generali and Isostar do the work?

Still very much looking forward to the rest of this Giro though.

Good thing that my team realized that they have to be active in the hunt for breakaways. Enjoy the efforts eventhough i dont really understand the selection of details (why is it paprstka who chases the KoM? why put 4 guys into the break on THAT stage? etc)

Still not sure whether it was smart NOT to bring lopez here. Route suits him nicely as well but avoiding Spilak and Gesink for more stage success and Herklotz for the u25 jersey looked interesting as well...
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Herklotz not winning Shock

Good to see the team in the break again. Nesset just on the wrong side of the split, but no big damage done..
