The teams have arrived to get the 2018 MG World Championships under way. The event is being held for the first time in Oceania, with a course from Melbourne to Geelong receiving the honour to do so. The race is expected to favour sprinters who can handle the undulations that the course will throw at them.
Sam Bewley, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Lars Boom and Tejay Van Garderen are the former winners present again who wish to become the first two time World Champion. Bewley will be among the overall favourites to win this race along with the likes Van Staeyen, Degenkolb, Swift and Coquard for their sprinting abilities, and Ewan, Demare and Kump, among others, for their overall suitability for the course.
The Elite Road Race is not the only event on show. We start off with the B Worlds, wherein one team will earn the right to join the Elite Road Road. It is being billed as a Ahlstrand vs Grosu affair, but can someone spoil the party? Two U23 events, the ITT and the Road Race, give a platform to the youngsters to showcase their skills without the presence of the big boys. Who will get their careers off to a glorious start? The TTT and the ITT will showcase the best team and the best individual, respectively, against the clock. The Netherlands and Taylor Phinney have been dominant in these events in recent years, but neither won last season, and the latter is absent this time! Who will ride to make a name for themselves and their team?

Unusual to see such a weak Australian TTT lineup.... A good amount of our riders making the cut for their nations, so I will of course be cheering for team. Extra amount of cheering for Michael Olsson.

Van Asbroeck, Bonifazio and Cerny probably won't lead the team, so all hopes on Gaviria!
No expectations for the U23 but Oomen can always surprise me.
Cheering for Umerbekov in the B race of course
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Cool to have guys in the race; can't expect anything as the route doesn't favor anyone I have, and my team is well below the best on any terrain.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

Actually not too unlikely for Boivin to get a good result in the B-race, I don't expect him to take the win tho.

Guerao should be the leader of the Spanish team, hope he gets over the hills and can show himself in the final sprint.
Suryadi and Nepo should be the leaders of their respective teams in the B race, will be interesting if they can do something.
A little bit disappointed to not see Gidich in the U23 (ITT) startlist where he surely would've been one of the outside favorites after I haven't nominated him for the elite races. How were the U23 startlists decided? I don't really think the two Sri Lankans should be ranked higher there than Gidich for Asia. |

Gidich was somehow missed out when compiling the riders list. Has been added now.

Yeah. My bad and it's a shame, that we are the reason for Australia not having a shot at the WC title on home soil.. Heart breaking..

Hmm I would have liked a better leadout in France for either Coquard or Demare... Too many attackers for my liking, when 2 pre-race favorites are in the team. Vanderbiest and Bar f.e. over Gallopin and Roux would have made a lot of sense!

Ewan leading the home charge and is my personal best shot at any medal this time around.
Alaphilippe could be key to France, he's one of the better hill coping leadout riders and that final positioning is going to be critical.
Then there's Simon Yates who will be hoping for a hard race to slim the field down, could be a very dark, very long, very outside shot at the Top5... probably not.
Even managed to get a handful into the U23 races, although none of them have a hope in hell outside the flukiest of breakaways.
Bring on the finale of the 2018 season!

Debesay and Jams for a breakaway duo win in the B RR please Loving Tosh in the leadout for Belgium, course suits him well. Not loving the lack of Rowe in Britain, wtf And glad Roux got picked en France, his FL/HI should be very useful for Demare there! Also have Bennett and Davison for NZ, hopefully they can do some good work! Areruya could be huge for Kemboi in Africa to control the race, hoping for a big shift from him if he's confined to domestique duties.

Just realised Cancellara gets to bow out with a worlds appearance in the Swiss TTT setup as the final race of his career.
Hopefully his old legs can still offer something to the side.

Good to see a nice representation of my riders across the startlists!
Cornu and the Belgian team could have a decent shot in the TTT as some other squads look somewhat weaker than you'd hope.
Got a good selection of riders in the U23 RR and ITT riding for different teams so it should be exciting to follow that!
A little bummed that Andres Paez hasn't made the U23 RR in the America's team as I'd have to think the course suits him and he's a better rider than some chosen. Maybe been missed somehow

Yes in this case Repsol have not nominated their riders and Paez being on loan there was missed out unfortunately. Probably a bit late to change now with the reporting already started.

Really interesting B-race. Personally my boys rode aggressively and Smukulis with the silver medal is fantastic. Grats to Viking, and thanks for the report Marco!

Very nice race form Ahlstrand to secure the win and take a replay in the real Worlds!
Thanks for reporting! |

Cool to see an action packed race Really liked to see Debesay so aggressive but it seems he should have left it later as I believe he could have won or got on the podium if he had. Ah well Venter with some huge work done is also cool to see Congrats viking, great ride from Ahlstrand!

Great win for Ahlstrand, though a much different race to expectations.
Happy to see Finland trying for the break at least and Liepins with some action towards the end as well.
