Il Lombardia. The last Monument of the season. The last race of the PT calendar. The last for PT peloton to achieve a moment of glory and etch their names in MG history. This is the 12th edition of this famous race and we're back to a milder route compared to last season's parcours. Talking of last season, defending champion Simon Spilak is back to defend his crown, albeit having changed colours from Blue to Green. The winner of the two editions previous to last year, Simone Ponzi is also on the startlist, and looking to make this his third title. The startlist is a who's who of the best punchers and climbers from the PT and beyond, in what is shaping up to be an exciting race. The championship race might be more or less decided, but there is strong interest the in the PT division at the other end of the table.
Also to be decided, is the battle for the final podium spot, with Vesuvio, Festina, Evonik, Air France, Gazelle, T-Mobile and Isostar, all still in contention. Down in the relegation battle. UBS are just 24 points off Tinkoff's total in the battle to escape the drop-zone, with Desigual realistically the only other team who might pass both the afore-mentioned teams.
Name | MON | HIL | STA | ACC | Hagen | 70 | 85 | 81 | 79 | Bakelants | 75 | 84 | 81 | 78 | Ponzi | 73 | 84 | 77 | 80 | De Bie | 71 | 83 | 77 | 75 | Skujins | 70 | 83 | 80 | 76 | Claeys | 67 | 83 | 74 | 73 | Spilak | 85 | 82 | 80 | 74 | Sagan | 74 | 82 | 78 | 76 | Van Garderen | 72 | 82 | 78 | 79 | Kelderman | 71 | 82 | 80 | 72 | Gastauer | 71 | 82 | 78 | 76 | Ginanni | 69 | 82 | 77 | 73 | Gesink | 83 | 81 | 78 | 68 | Beltran | 79 | 81 | 73 | 76 | Trofimov | 76 | 81 | 77 | 73 | Mohoric | 71 | 81 | 78 | 77 | Koretzky | 71 | 80 | 77 | 79 | Boswell | 71 | 80 | 77 | 76 | Vakoc | 71 | 80 | 75 | 74 |
Boasson Hagen, Bakelants and Ponzi are the strongest punchers in the division and should be top favourites for the race. Bakelants has an edge over his rivals for this route in particular, with his better climbing ability on harder terrain.
De Bie, Skuijns and Claeys are the other punchers who will be targeting a podium finish. Claeys has a distinct disadvantage on harder slopes, and that could be a dampener to his high aspirations in this race.
Defending champion Simon Spilak might not be the strongest puncher but may just be the strongest overall when it comes to going up any sort of incline. This is also the last race at his peak and he'll be desperate to mark it on a high.
Liege-Bastogne-Liege winner Peter Sagan would want to make it two Monument wins for the season as he lines up primarily as a Top 5 possibility. His backups and energy should help him on this long course.
Van Ganderen had a good start to the season and he'd like to sign off on a similar note. Gastauer and Ginanni probably the other main puncher bets for a Top 10 finish.
Name | MON | HIL | STA | ACC | Spilak | 85 | 82 | 80 | 74 | Madrazo | 85 | 76 | 81 | 72 | Pluchkin | 85 | 75 | 78 | 74 | Morton | 84 | 76 | 79 | 67 | Alarcon | 84 | 73 | 71 | 78 | Gesink | 83 | 81 | 78 | 68 | Machado | 83 | 76 | 75 | 70 | Martin | 82 | 77 | 77 | 76 | Guldhammer | 81 | 77 | 74 | 76 | Monsalve | 81 | 76 | 79 | 73 | Galta | 81 | 73 | 78 | 64 | Olivier | 80 | 76 | 76 | 71 | Nerz | 80 | 72 | 75 | 68 |
Simon Spilak is the strongest climber on the startlist, with his puncher abilities giving him a big advantage over others climbers. Gesink, too, falls in this category, being a somewhat weaker version of Spilak.
Premier climbers Madrazo, Pluchkin, Morton and Alarcon all start, looking to take a chance in a terrain which might not suit them perfectly.
Beltran is the other rider equally strong on both hills and cobbles.

Last chance this season for De Bie to win something huge. Good support in Olivier as well. |

Looking forward to see what Bakelants and Martin can do together. Could quite possibly be the last race for at least one of them, so hopefully a good result to end the season.

Last year we avoided relegation in this race. This year it'll be impossible but if we can somehow manage a top10 it would be a pleasing farewell to the ProTour.
Spilak should win this.
Good luck everyone!

A top 10 must be the goal with Beltran. His great performance in Marocco kind of makes me hopeful, at least until I remember how he has been doing the whole season in the one day classics...
A top 10 would thus be great, but I'm not too hopeful. Though, fingers crossed we can put several riders in what tends to be a rather big group fighting it out for the win here in Lombardia, or at least a rather big group close to the front, to get some depth points.
But really, all eyes on the Tinkoff vs. Trofimov (UBS) battle! |

If Spilak and Mohoric work well together, and make use of the awesome team around them full of Mo/Hi hybrids (Ricco, Pernsteiner, Polanc, Kratochvila) and pure puncheurs (Kump, Wyss), then our results with some great depth could lead us all the way into the top 5 of the rankings. That said, I don't trust the AI here at all. Also Abhishek is reporting , and his PT races turned out to be underperformance shitshows for Isostar all year
Very eager to see how collective Russia vs. the Russian star works out!

Crazy strong field, not hopeful for Trofimov to do anything here. It should make for a good race though. Good luck Oleg!

Well, for me this is just something to get done and hope for the best. The chances of finishing 3rd is unrealistic, and even finishing within top 5 seems to become increasingly difficult.
So all we can do is hope for Koretzky, while knowing that he doesn't usually perform in races like this.

Thought we raced good. When it came down to a sprint (between 50 guys!!!) I didn't have the best feeling, but Bakelants really pushed Ponzi to the end there. Very happy about that and a good race to finish off the season. Thanks for the report, Abhishek

Well well well... It is time to take a good hard look at the numbers for me!
Koretzky doing exactly what we hoped for, and as such most definately keeps us in the top 5, as we don't lose out by much to T-Mobile, Air France and Gazelle while actually beating Vesuvio, Isostar and Evonik...
Could we actually manage to jump to 3rd and salvage our very unrealistic goal in the final race, and yet again take out Vesuvio in the final race of the season? I guess it comes down to whether or not this classifies as a monument or not, which I believe but can't recall exactly!

So we end this ProTour adventure with 12th by KHJ which is a very nice result for a rider with his caliber!
Thanks you all for this season and I apologize for my weak commitment this season but have been busy with a lot of work and stuff this year!
I hope to get more time for this great hobby to come if you let me stay for next season! |

Thank fuck if we move to PCM18. This race was utter crap. 50 riders together at the line at Il Lombardia? Hell no! Did the stage creator forget to put a proper Mo/Hi ratio on? Replay of the stage anyone? This was maybe the most disappointing race at the very end of the season.
Thank you for the awesome reports all year Abhishek. Maybe we'll have a luckier number for your races next year.

Not a bad result at all. After his decline, 8th in a monument is actually a good result for Ginnani. And additionally getting 13th, 21st, 24th and 28th is a nice bonus.
Curious to see what this will do to our final ranking.
Pretty dissapointing to have Lombardia end in a mass sprint though. Let's take the tougher profile again next year.
Congrats to Hugo Boss and thanks for the report Abishek.

It was the same 2-3 seasons ago I think. Back the I profited too with Pichon and Koretzky.
