Macskako Kerekparverseny
We're heading for Hungary, where the Macskako Kerekparveseny will be held for the first time. The race starts not too far from Budapest and goes to Pannonhalma:
The town, known as Gyorszentmárton until 1965, is dominated by its most famous landmarks: the thousand-year-old Pannonhalma Archabbey and the Benedictine Secondary School, which are situated above the village, on Szent Marton Hill. The hill itself is still known by this ancient name and the name 'Pannonhalma' was introduced as part of the Hungarian language reforms in the nineteenth century. The association with Saint Martin ('Szent Márton' in Hungarian) derives from a belief that Martin of Tours was born here, though others believe he was born in nearby Szombathely.
This hill features the most crucial of all cobbled sectors in the race. Climbing skills will be needed for sure and so it's an event suited for those cobblers, who handle hills pretty well.
The Startlist
The Favorites Favorites | HI | CO | AC | | Outsiders | HI | CO | AC | Vanspeybrouck | 71 | 82 | 69 | | Sinkeldam | 75 | 77 | 68 | Blythe | 66 | 82 | 73 | | Bolivar | 66 | 77 | 69 | Zepuntke | 69 | 81 | 64 | | Kosic | 66 | 77 | 64 | Baugnies | 72 | 80 | 73 | | Insausti | 64 | 77 | 66 | Vanbilsen | 69 | 80 | 71 | | Gaday | 74 | 76 | 73 | Burghardt | 68 | 80 | 69 | | Saber | 68 | 76 | 79 | Vanmarcke | 66 | 80 | 72 | | Joseph | 66 | 76 | 70 | Nolf | 66 | 80 | 71 | | Okbamariam | 65 | 76 | 68 | Maes | 67 | 79 | 67 | | Flaksis | 65 | 76 | 62 | Machado | 63 | 79 | 61 | | Nepomnyachsniy | 64 | 76 | 76 | Thomas | 60 | 79 | 78 | | Lindeman | 64 | 76 | 76 | David | 75 | 78 | 73 | | Domene | 57 | 76 | 75 | Theuns | 74 | 78 | 76 | | Debesay | 73 | 75 | 78 | Albert | 69 | 78 | 68 | | Langeveld | 71 | 75 | 72 | Bush | 62 | 78 | 73 | | Kuroeda | 70 | 75 | 73 | Taillefour | 57 | 78 | 55 | | Grashev | 69 | 75 | 73 |
Baugnies and Vanspeybrouck stand out as those riders, who combine climbing with cobbles. While the latter enjoys a pretty outstanding season, the former has had a year with ups and downs so far. Both should love the profile though and there's no real excuse for them to not deliver a big result in this classic. Vanspeybrouck also has some great support in riders like Sinkeldam and also Nolf should provide good help for all sectors outside the climb.
David, Theuns, Gaday, Debesay and Kuroeda as the next best punchy cobblers, who will aim for a notable result and maybe even the podium. Particularly David and Theuns simply have to hope for a special result, just like the two top favorites.
Zepuntke, Blythe, Vanbilsen, Burghardt, Vanmarcke or Maes should not be chanceless though. Yes, the climb up to Pannonhalma's abbery has to be climbed several times, but those premium cobblers should still benefit from the amount of cobblestone kilometres nevertheless.
Kinoshita decided to enter the race, too. A pretty interesting choice for the premium puncheur, who does not handle the pavé at all. It would be big surprise if the climb(s) have an bigger impact than cobbles here though. |

It's quite simple, we need a good result to stay in. Not the best profile for Vanbilsen, but I'm counting on him.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

More of a 'giving it a go' race than anything else, with the cobbles likely to be too strong for Saber to stay at the front, and with only Per as support.

Oh crap! I totally forgot about this race.
Probably Gaday's last chance of proving he's worth staying without levelling up after this season.

50% sure we have a top 5 goal. So go Debesay, but extra hard

One of the final chances for Zepuntke, hoping he can do something here.

Certainly an interesting profile, expect the 'combo' punchy-cobblers to enjoy it the most, although Baugnies and VanSpey should fight out for victory. Hill probably doesn't favour Bush for WCC, probably puts him on equal 'protected-rider' (rather than leader) footing with Bolivar for this outing. Would be great to send one of our versatile dudes in the BotD, someone like Juarez or De Luna are lacking in showing their face much this season, but might survive alright here if they can get a handy early lead.
Look forward to the report (and nice to be see some of the 'missing' races now seeing the light of day ).

Maes and Okba dream team united again! Maybe a little too bumpy for Maes to take the top prize, but it looks as though he’ll definitely be hanging around the front barring disaster. Vansep and Blythe should find this too easy I think.

Not good enough, but at least the Carlsberg comeback seems to have stalled as well. Yes, we've reached the point we're I'm actively rooting against other teams I like.
Baugnies simply the best this season, congrats on another win! And thanks for the report Tsmoturn.

Wooo Zepuntke! Very good performance my boy! Marcos with a good result as well, the others a bit underwhelming and not picking up as many points as I may have hoped.
Congrats Kulczyk and thanks tsmoha and roturn for the report!

It turned out as was expected. Per and Saber in the points but nothing much worth mentioning.

Clearly too hilly for Sep to deliver a great result, so i'll take the 11th place without complaining too much

Congrats to Kulczyk, what a terrific win. Such a strong attack was never going to be brought back.
Maes doing Maes things and bringing in some nice points, always gonna be happy with that
Thanks for the report!

Happy with 2nd place here! Unfortunately, must be one of few races Blythe fully shoved his potential this season.

Sorry I'm late to this. I'm still away and haven't had wifi everywhere.
First of all, tremendous report.
Second of all, I'm fricking sick of Jerome Baugnies inexplicably destroying us. All of my guys consistently underperforming doesn't help matters.
Not good enough by VSB, and I can't even say the violent things I want to do to Nolf at this point, out of respect for the real life deceased.

Thank you tsmoha and roturn for the excellent report.
Honestly though, what more is there to be said about Baugnies? The fact that bblover feels that way about him fills my soul with warmth
He’s a stud and it’s fantastic that the game will have another year of him in his prime coming up...
Thanks for the congrats guys

Called BotD appearance (De Luna), but didn't prove significant in the bigger picture. Harrison 15th our only point scorer is disappointing at this cruch stage of the season. Not a bad result for Sam, but our other cobblers who have been having a good season overall with the occasonal blip no-show. Another blip then, can't really afford too many more of those now!
Congrats to those fighting out the victory, and thanks to our reporter(s).
