Tour of Northern Europe Preview
This race has been on the calendar since 2010 and is one the most popular on the calendar. The race provides five different kinds of challenges in its eight stages, making it one of the most unpredictable of the season.
The Tour of Northern Europe starts off with a difficult Team Time Trial over cobbled terrain which is sure to provide a selection dilemma for the teams in order to keep their favourites safe. This is followed by a bumpy flat stage, which, although not particularly easy, should allow some chance to recuperate for the peloton. This is followed by the first of two hilly stages, with an uphill finish closing out the stage. Stage 4 brings out the hard cobbles in the second half of the race, and is a stage which usually has a lot of say in the final standings. This is followed by the Individual Time Trial, which could again turn the top of the table upside down, depending on how hard the cobbles stage will be ridden. Stage 6 is another chance for the fast men to pick up a stage win, and a small respite for the GC contenders. The second hilly stage bore witness to Lars Boom's attack last season, which propelled him to the eventual GC win. Could this year see something similar? The final stage is expected to be a calm one, with the sprinters able to round off an otherwise intense race with another one of glory.
| HI | TT | ST | RS | RC | CO | SP | AC | Bewley | 71 | 71 | 78 | 76 | 85 | 83 | 83 | 83 | Wisniowski | 71 | 74 | 75 | 76 | 71 | 80 | 73 | 76 | Van Avermaet | 75 | 60 | 77 | 74 | 76 | 81 | 77 | 77 | Trentin | 74 | 61 | 76 | 71 | 75 | 81 | 75 | 76 | Gerts | 76 | 67 | 76 | 80 | 74 | 78 | 72 | 70 | Summerhill | 73 | 59 | 76 | 72 | 69 | 83 | 70 | 73 | Polanc | 73 | 70 | 78 | 73 | 65 | 78 | 67 | 75 | Kristoff | 68 | 68 | 75 | 71 | 76 | 78 | 83 | 79 | Kump | 77 | 63 | 76 | 73 | 80 | 73 | 81 | 80 | Senechal | 67 | 65 | 79 | 74 | 70 | 82 | 69 | 74 | Boom | 74 | 77 | 74 | 75 | 73 | 73 | 60 | 74 | Kruijswijk | 72 | 73 | 76 | 73 | 73 | 74 | 65 | 75 | Tsatevich | 77 | 60 | 74 | 73 | 70 | 75 | 75 | 75 | Lagab | 71 | 73 | 72 | 67 | 60 | 76 | 72 | 74 | Altur | 70 | 63 | 75 | 70 | 70 | 81 | 72 | 68 | Stallaert | 67 | 58 | 76 | 68 | 80 | 81 | 79 | 76 | Potts | 74 | 66 | 74 | 75 | 69 | 76 | 68 | 71 | Declerq | 73 | 68 | 73 | 71 | 70 | 77 | 67 | 67 | Sulimov | 70 | 65 | 77 | 71 | 67 | 79 | 65 | 71 | Kwiatkowski | 79 | 70 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 68 | 67 | 75 | Harrison | 67 | 72 | 73 | 70 | 76 | 73 | 78 | 81 | Ringheim | 67 | 66 | 75 | 71 | 73 | 78 | 73 | 75 |
Defending champion Lars Boom is back but age is catching up to him and he is only a fair shot at a Top 10 finish this season. A repeat of last season's heroics would require something magical from the Aegon veteran.
Sam Bewley is the overwhelming favourite to win the race, with his cobbles superiority expected to provide the necessary impetus. He couldn't challenge Boom on the second hilly stage last season, settling for second place in the end.
The leading podium contenders are Wisniowski and Van Avermaet, youth and experience, who come in with nearly opposite skills but a very similar overall ability for this race. While the veteran is better over the hills and in the final sprint, the apprentice is far better against the clock. Their skills over the cobbles is similar.
Trentin, Gerts, Summerhill, Polanc and Kristoff are likely to be the best bets to pull off the win, outside of the top 3. They are all very different riders but their combination of skills give them an edge of over the rest of the competition in such a race. Trentin and Summerhill are experts over the cobbles, who can handle hills quite well. Gerts is the best puncher in this group, but has enough guile over the cobbles to keep himself in touch. Polanc is the best Time Trial rider among them, and is similar on the stones to Gerts. Kristoff's best skill is his sprinting, and he too can handle the cobblestones well. His weakness in the hills could prove to be his undoing.
The others consist of riders who should be pushing for Top 10 finishes, but do not quite have the all-round ability to challenge at the top.
| COB | ACC | Bewley | 83 | 83 | Summerhill | 83 | 73 | Senechal | 82 | 74 | Kamyshev | 82 | 60 | Bakari | 82 | 60 | Van Avermaet | 81 | 77 | Trentin | 81 | 76 | Altur | 81 | 68 | Stallaert | 81 | 76 | Teunissen | 81 | 69 | Sibilla | 81 | 64 | Wisniowski | 80 | 76 | Daniel | 80 | 72 | Spengler | 80 | 70 |
The cobbles on Stage 4 usually ensures a lot of time gaps in the peloton, and Bewley is the best bet to take advantage of this. Summerhill is his closest competition in this regard. Senechal is another rider who can make his presence on this stage. While Kamyshev is a strong rider, his support stats could see him lose steam on the cobbles. Van Avermaet, Trentin, Stallaert and Wisniowski will be hoping to keep the pack together, as they are the fastest in the sprint finish from this group, barring Bewley.
| HIL | ACC | Claeys | 83 | 73 | Kelderman | 82 | 72 | Gastauer | 82 | 76 | Koretzky | 80 | 79 | Vogt | 80 | 63 | Kwiatkowski | 79 | 75 | Watson | 78 | 72 | Paulinho | 78 | 75 | Jensen | 78 | 76 | Dyrnes | 78 | 77 | Chernetskiy | 78 | 71 | Landa | 78 | 69 |
Quite a few strong punchers have decided to show up in this race, to try to make the two hilly stages hard for the rest of the peloton. Claeys will be hoping for a good result, and his team need it! Kelderman and Gastauer wil be considered strong favourites to win one of the hilly stages, given their prowess. The best candidate for the overall from this group is wildcard team Netia's Kwiatkowski, so look out for him to try and put pressure on the GC in the hills.
| TT | Fiedler | 83 | Dillier | 80 | Dempster | 79 | Goncalves | 78 | Campenaerts | 78 | Lammertink | 78 | Dumoulin | 78 | Hofer | 78 | Bibby | 77 | Boom | 77 | Vangstad | 77 | Van Baarle | 77 | Turek | 77 | Frison | 77 | Oram | 77 | Andersen | 77 | O'Shea | 77 | Verona | 77 |
Only a couple of riders on this list are likely to make a mark in the GC. The likes of Boom and Bibby would be prime candidates for the same, given their overall abilities. In terms of Stage 5 itself, Fiedler needs to have a very bad day to win that stage.
| SPR | ACC | Bewley | 83 | 83 | Kristoff | 83 | 79 | Enger | 81 | 78 | Maksimov | 81 | 84 | Kump | 81 | 80 | Boeckmans | 81 | 83 | Docker | 79 | 77 | Croket | 79 | 71 | Stallaert | 79 | 76 | Havik | 79 | 76 | Harrison | 78 | 81 | Young | 78 | 77 |
Bewley is the best sprinter in the field too, and realistically, along with the cobbled stage, could be looking at a haul of four stage wins! His closest competitor is Kristoff, who is a match for the Moser rider in terms of top speed but loses out in acceleration. Kump and Stallaert are among the contenders for the Top 10 positions and could look at the flat stages to nick some bonfication seconds in their favour.

Tinkoff start as favourites for the opening Team Time Trial and would like to take the leader's jersey on the first stage. Aker are expected to be their nearest rivals. Wildcard team World Cycling Center have a strong squad for the terrain and could be an outside shot to pull off an upset.

I wonder what the hell I was thinking not bringing Vlatos here instead of Portugal.
Maxime Daniel can hopefully do something like a top 15, while Koretzky should hopefully have some free room to attack. But other than that we have a horrible team here.

We've got 2 contenders for a top 5 Position. Sacrificed Balkan Tour for Kump for this race in order to score big here. Now I hope for some good stages, and more importantly a big GC for the two of us.

That went better than expected! I wonder if Vlatos in the team would have made us a top 5 on the day.
Koretzky with a good gap, which hopefully makes him ride aggressively!

Ah, favourite race of the season!
Beaten by Evonik. I give up
On a more serious note, not the stage win we had last year here, but on the other hand, Trentin wasn't dropped this time around. Hopefully that's a good sign considering his GC ambitions and our priorities when we hit the first GC stage, assuming that will be the first hilly stage.
Congratulations on the win and a great start, Bushwackers! |

Well that's exciting, thanks for the congrats! Really well done by the guys, but I'm afraid that's about all we will be getting from this race. Interesting that Spengler stayed with them at the finish, I guess the cobble stat was clearly important here.

Some strong names caught behind on this stage - some of them who probably shouldnt have been gapped. While it is surely beneficial for Greg, im not sure whether i like that since this stage should have been more or less eventless

great showing by Isostar - Kump not finishing it off however, as the stage should've fitted him very well, is a little disappointing
also good to see our major names ahead of the split

Again, not the result we needed at all. Polanc with a very weak showing, he's got to hold on to riders like Wisniowski and Bewley in this race on the hills.

Good sprint by SHE on stage 2, very much appreciated.
But boy, having the race already ruined on stage 3 kind of dampens my enthusiasm for SHE's podium sprint... Where did that Trentin guy we all could enjoy due to his versatility and ability to perform on multiple terrains go? I haven't seen him for more than a season
Dropping 59 seconds to the best puncheurs isn't a disaster in itself. The big problem is that he dropped 59 seconds to no less than 18 riders, which I fear will affect his status in the peloton and for the AI when we now hit the cobbles for the worse. I'm just annoyed, especially as he really should be able to be part of that front group, seeing other riders that managed it.
Nevertheless, thank you for the report, Abhishek! |

Our team's mostly unmaxed and we're already doing fantastically in this race! With 2nd and 3rd on GC and the team's classification so far.
Lots of cobbles guys close to us so we'll lose that all soon though.
Also, Veyhe is 2nd in the KOM standings!
Thanks for the repots so far Abhi! Looking forward to seeing how the cobbles pan out.

Great win from Koretzky after messing it up big time on stage 2, which should have suited a lot of my riders pretty well... But in the end all of them ended up losing time!
Maxime Daniel is just here for the cobbled stage I guess, I had some hopes that he could challenge for a top 15 GC, but clearly not. So when all GC aspirations are gone, this is absolutely the best we can hope for. Let's cross what can be crossed that Koretzky will keep aggressive, as KOM and PTS could potentially be our big score of the race.

Late to the party, but at least the riders showed up! One of our big goals this season and I quite like the start for Wisniowski so far. Decent TTT and a very good hilly stage. If he can just stay with the best cobblers on the next stage, he should have decent chances to be in the lead after the TT. Fingers crossed that he will continue to race strong!
