GP Kigali Preview
GP Kigali
Kigali – Kigali 183.0 km
Welcome to the 4th edition of GP Kigali, constantly on the calendar since 2015
Though this race is relative young we already have a rider winning it twice Danny Summerhill taking the first two editions, last season it was won by Marcus Burghardt, he will be on the start list again, aiming to also become a double winner.
Favorites
We saw a result last season where the race was won by the top cobbler, but 2nd and 4th was 2nd level cobblers with a good punch, indication that a good punch may well compensate for some lag of “technical” ability with this profile. As in most races a good acceleration may play a decisive part.
Stamina, Resistance, and the ability to keep up pace on the flat asphalt road will come into play but might be more or less important. Sprint could also play a part but it is not too likely.
We have a long list of riders with a useful balance between these ability’s, that may all be top contenders on the right day, I will run through them in an order based on my guess of what the right balance might be, but below show a list ordered after cobbles.
Vanspeybrouck seems to be the riders to beat, having a very fine combination of skills useful to win this race.
Blythe is a joker for the win, top cobbler, great acceleration, supreme sprint, but a significant lag of punch to get over those many hill’s, if he can make it to the finish with enough energy to sprint he can easily win the race, but he may well struggle to get there.
Baugnies, is one of those riders who want to see selection on those hills, amongst the better cobblers he got the best punch, top flat speed and great stamina. What he doesn’t want is a large group, he is a slow finisher.
Theuns is the hilly sprinter with a very good combination of skills, but he is not amongst the very best cobblers, so he needs to make up for energy lost on the stones, on the other sections.
David is one of the very best puncher, also with a good overall skills set, but just as Theuns he is not the very best cobbler.
Now we got five riders all lacking the punch, but also all better cobblers that Theuns and David.
Vanbilsen stands out with a very good stamina and he is also very fast on the flat making him top this group.
Zepuntke also with a lot of Stamina, and the best cobbler of those four.
Vanmarcke, Burghardt and Nolf very similar riders and all very good cobblers. Vanmarcke just a little stronger in some of the support skills.
Beneath those 10 mentioned in detail, there is actually a lot more strong riders able to take a good result in a race like this, Maes, Thomas, Fenn, Van Keirsbulck, Albert, Bush, Taillefour and Sinkeldam and others.
I would not be surprised to see one of those in top 5.

Back to the cobbles! Not the best profile for Vanbilsen, but a good result should still be possible.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Guess it will be Baugnies, but I'm cheering for Vanspeybrouck here. Really didn't perform too well in classics this season and that's surely a race, that should suit him better than many other contenders.

Who cares about the race at the front - it's Areruya's first ever pro race in his home country <3 Hope for an African winner in Debesay

Not mentioning Grashev in the preview, someone's never seen him ride cobbles in Africa before. Been a great stomping ground for the Bulgarian in the past, either here or in Faso, and don't be shocked to see him doing well again.
Burghardt our best bet ahead of Thomas, but G's having a top year (again) so don't count out the welshman. Plus Matthews i always think can go well in these types of races. Basically we're looking at getting around the Top5 with another one or two in the scoring positions. Like most cobbles races

OH MY FRICKING GOD HE ACTUALLY DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So this is what VSB is capable of. Destroying a group and just powering his way over the cobbles to a victory. Where has this guy been all year? When he wants to be, he's just a monster.
When he started pulling early, I thought he was crazy, but what a freaking performance. Thought for sure we were in for another Baugnies special, but luckily we he wasn't having any of that. Exactly what we wanted from him.
Funny part is that because our depth scoring is still low, this won't even help us that much, but for once, I don't care. WE WON!!! God I'm just so happy.
Thank you so much for the awesome report Tamijo!

Not the greatest of results for Vanmarcke, specially as his great performances early in the season have dissapeared in the HC-rated races, but 9th isn't terrible either.
Really happy that Vanspeybrouck finally got that win. Probably too late for Carlsberg, but surely better than just mediocrity all around. Congrats bbl!

Finally Vanspeybrouck delivers big time, dominant performance. Baugnies this time one short of being the star of the show, ,which has for a long time been Ngamoki-Cameron. A little bit sad that Debesay couldn't make significant impact on the race, that would have been lovely. Great performance also by Lahcen Saber, while riders like Vanbilsen need to step up their game soon. Awesome report!!

Congrats on a long overdue win there! Vanbilsen once again napping at a crucial point, then wasted all his energy chasing and got overtaken in the sprint by that bunch of wheelsuckers. Not what I was hoping for.
Not sure if there are any cobbles left at this point

Congrats Carlsberg! Thanks tamijo for the report!
Not a bad race, seventh and eight is a good result though a bit more depth would've been nice.

Another brilliant over-performance from Saber. Looks like him, and us, have made 5th place finishes our own this season! Not the best day for Per, but I can't really complain about this result.
Congrats on the much awaited win bbl Thanks for the report!

Pretty much as Croatia said - a damn shame Debesay was a no-show in such a well-suiting race for him But also as he said: Ngamoiki-Cameron! Wow what a show and easily a career-best ride, gritty to get into the break and hang on to get a top 20, and along with Rowe in the top 15 giving us 3 points scorers and not an absolute blank here.

Bit weaker from Breen this time, but can't really complain after his nice string of results lately and the tough opposition here. Great racing from De Bondt once again, really love what he has been doing this season.
Big congrats BBL!

A mystifying no-show from WCC. Bush was no pre-race favourite, so thought a damn good chance of being in the BotD here. Instead we contributed to the early chase, only to subsequently have all our riders dropped well before the sharp-end of the race .
On a more positive note, thanks to Tamijo for the reporting, and congrats to BBL on VSB's victory.

I'm quite sure Vanmarcke has 3 cobbled races left on his season. But surely some are PTHC races, so that depend on your bands

Congrats bbl! VSB, the ultimate joker cobblist, finally delivered. Finally.
Btw, I’ll take Sinkeldam off your hands next season if you’re feeling that frustration sink in
Baugnies has been on another one this season, unfortunately he doesn’t have too much beasting left to do this year, but I this season has already been Hollywood blockbuster material. Everyone loves a comeback kid.
Thanks for the report Tamijo, excellent
