Gisborne GP Discussion
jandal7
Report won't be for around 72 hours, but why not create some early hype (so it doesn't feel too delayed Pfft)?
Gisborne GP

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/profiles/c2hc_gisborne.jpg

A very tough course here in the Gisborne region of New Zealand, as this popular race enters its sixth edition. A PCT classic for 4 years (and won by many prestigious names, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier who's on the startlist here), last year with the hiatus of the Tour of Southland it moved down to fill the Kiwi CT spot - and home favourite George Bennett delivered, delighting home fans as he took a narrow win in the sprint over Boily and another former winner, Monfort.

The course will wear on the riders, long and with a fair bit of elevation gain. The race hots up with the long climb in the last half, with two more steep climbs before the descent down to the final climb. 3km long and steep before flattening off at the end, repeatedt twice as well. Not your typical Ardennes mur but no mountain. However, as Bennett showed last year, a punchy climber can get some success here.

Though he's not many pundit's pick for top dog this year, after the season opener in San Cristobal it's only fair that it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Zaini who we start with in this preview. He played a smart race and looked very strong as well. But he hasn't earned a quarter of the points as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier, who returned to the PCT he relegated from last year and kicked their ass, taking two stages and the GC in the Tour Down Under! That speaks volumes to his form and he'll enter this race as top favourite to become the first ever double-winner of this race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser hasn't had the dizzying success in the opening months (of course, we've only had one CT race!), but is also a very strong candidate as probably one of the fastest accelerating and best uphill.

However they'll face stiff competition of course. Perhaps given the circumstances it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson who could prove the most likely to take this one out. He and his BNZ team will be fired up to replicate the home team victory of Xero last year. He and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Siskevicius will hope to use their great kick to outdo the likes of Zaini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio - also no slouch in a sprint or attack. Cerveceria bring a potent double threat in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Teuns (who showed good form in Tachira, taking the main hilly stage) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Hoelgaard, who may not be likely winners, but can go for the podium on a good day - certainly if they play the tactics right.

The likely upsets will come from the likes of mainstay hilly outsiders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Vichot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Haavardsholm, with their amazing acceleration, as well as Vichot's teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri. The Delvaux duo will provide sterling opposition to the Gautiers and Zainis and a great double act if they play their cards right.

Also the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Veilleux, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Weiss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Geschke (who even has a leadout punchy sprinter!) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Torckler are good bets for a reduced bunch sprint given the lighter slopes of the final 800m. But given the tough back half of the race and the double climb, that would seem unlikely!

No love for Mendes. Pfft

Top 30 somehow please. And for once not getting dropped at half time.

Otherwise up to Ockeloen/Mollema to do something. Maybe even a break by one of the two home riders Bauer/Bain.

Tamijo
Really hope to the Ben Nasser’s high stamina play a part in this one, high hopes for a podium, likely one of the few options for him to do that.

Kebede on the right day hopefully sitting with the best until the last climb and scoring something also.

I’m really hoping Edmondson can go 2 better then San Cristoba!! He’s got a strong team and fairly good form. I think we can grab the win!!

Good luck to everyone and looking forward to a great race!!

dominox
I expect... nothing. Maybe Wallays will join early breakaway, but that's probably and sadly all I can do in those classics.

Sykkel_Freak
Slightly better profile for Kadri/Vichot than San Cristobal, but still not perfect, meaning I'll be pleased if we can achieve a top 10 (or two) here as well.

Hopefully Vichot can continue his nice form from Langkawi, and Kadri step it up a bit after a rather poor Tour Down Under Smile

Hopefully I wont be waiting 72 hours just to be utterly disappointed lol.

Massive opportunity to score big points for us considering weaker startlist compared to San Cristobal. Gautier is probably winning this, so Ill settle for 2nd, no biggie

Let's go (top 10 please!)

I have this as a win goal, but missing out on Dyrnes made this impossible Pfft

jandal, no offense but I have no idea what these colors in the favorites list are supposed to be, and I am starting to wonder if you did this preview without ever looking at a DB? Pfft

Red are the weaker stats in comparison, green the stronger ones.

Had me confused for a while too, but it's kinda.. Logical Pfft

Aquarius97
The problem is that the MG DB is the other way around. Red for the great stats, green for the bad ones

I'm hoping for a good breakaway. Let's go Geschke!

Hilly races might be our teams worst department, but we come with a trio of 76 hill co-leaders in Pibernik, Seibeb and Othman.

Will be interesting to see how the AI handles that. Hoping for some nice depth scoring Smile

My old excel I used to extract the results hates Finnish names Pfft Hope this race was worth the wait, congrats from me to Campari - Ben Nasser was just a beast there. Damn you for snatching him off me Pfft And sorry for the delay.

Amazing race for Campari here! Not at Xero's level last year, but still 1st + 10th in a C2HC race is a great scoring race for them.

Ben Nasser was in another level today, and not even the "home bonus" for Edmondson and BNZ could stop him from this great win. Congrats to Tamijo, and great report Jandal! Grin

And yes, he was also one of my targets once it became obvious that both Trofimov and Lutsenko were out of my budget Pfft But for one year left at his peak, it wasn't worthy to pay him so much having Bystrom already in the team Smile

Dang it!! Sooo close!!! Edmondson pushed Ben Nasser till the end put just couldn't get ahead Sad Still an awesome 2nd place for Edmondson and the team!!

Congrats to Ben Nasser and Tamijo on that huge win!!

And Great report Jandal!!
