Classique du Grand-Duché Preview
We're back in Luxembourg for the eight consecutive running of the Classique du Grand-Duché. The race starts off on mostly flat terrains but riders will start going uphill, and downhill too, once they cover the first third of the race. Riders need to be attentive throughout as a small acceleration at the front can easily split the pack in this kind of terrain. One thing is for sure, we will crown a new winner of this race as no previous winner is on the startlist.
| HIL | STA | RES | ACC | Skujins | 83 | 80 | 77 | 76 | Spilak | 82 | 80 | 81 | 74 | Gastauer | 82 | 78 | 70 | 76 | Koretzky | 80 | 77 | 70 | 79 | Demare | 79 | 75 | 72 | 81 | Borges | 78 | 75 | 73 | 81 | Vakoc | 80 | 75 | 71 | 74 | Barbin | 78 | 75 | 73 | 76 | Waeytens | 80 | 72 | 70 | 73 | Watson | 78 | 76 | 72 | 72 | Chernetskiy | 78 | 80 | 69 | 71 | Slagter | 79 | 71 | 73 | 71 | Reichenbach | 79 | 76 | 69 | 69 | Buchmann | 78 | 73 | 73 | 71 |
At first glance, this race looks to be a three horse race between Skuijns, Spilak and last season's runner-up Gastauer, as they boast a distinct puncheur skill advantage to the rest of the field. While Skujns should be top favourite, Spilak is a rider who can win any race that he enters and is very likely candidate for the win here too. Gastauer gives up some ground to his two rivals in terms of energy and backup stats, and this might prove decisive in the final stages.
Koretzky, now leading Festina's charge on the hills with the afore-mentioned Spilak leaving, is among those contending for a top 5 finish, and possibly a podium. A rider who should be in a similar position come the business end of the race is Demare, who's superb acceleration will make him a strong candidate for the podium if it comes down to a multi-rider sprint to the line.
Coming off the back of an excellent season in 2017, where he consistently punched above his weight, Bruno Borges will be hoping to repeat his exploits from last season wherein he finished 4th in this race. Count out the feisty Portuguese at your own peril.
The likes of Vakoc, Chernetskiy and Slagter will be hoping for Top 10 finishes with anything higher being a surprise result.
Barbin and Waeytens lead the charge for the PCT Wildcard riders, with both Kulczyk and Lierse looking to mix it up among the big boys of the PT.

Yeah, f**k. Should have brought Bobridge here.. well, maybe Watson can somehow realize that he has a chance here and get us a lucky result.

Looking at the list of favourites, a top 10 should be the minimum for Vakoc here. I really hope he can deliver, as this is probably the only pure hilly race all season where he leads with most top puncheurs missing.
I'd say it's either Spilak or Démare for the win, depending on how the race plays out. Hopefully we get a selective one and not a big sprint for the win. The profile surely has enough hills to make it a very demanding race. |

Watson got a 10th place here last season iirc, so hopefully he can replicate that.
Not much in it for us here, just hoping for some riders in the break.

Well, as good a chance as Gastauer will get to win our home race.

Quite a weak startlist this season. 3-4 big names, which should decide the win. Could be some nice scoring for low level riders, that normally don`t get many top5-10 opportunities on this level.
Gastauer for the home team would be the suited winner of course but guess Spilak or Skujins will take it with Demare being an interesting option as well of course.
Nothing from my team here as it`s just for the participation. So hopefully breakway options? Likely with some weak time trialist instead of a mid level puncheur though. |

I thought the name sounded familiar and came to take a look. Yup, we're racing here. Waeytens to win this, obviously.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I like the looks of this tbh! That more the reason to be very unhappy with the final result when Koretzky doesn't manage that obvious top 5 result...
Anyway, we have to be very content with things looking at this starting lineup. On a good day Kastrantas could be good here too...
Let's see how they'll manage to dissapoint us.

As last this race continues to look like a good opportunity for Borges to score well. I believe another top5 should be in reach.
The podium, however, should be fought between Spilak, Skujins and home boy Gastauer. Likely to be a sweet race.
Thanks for the preview Abhishkek!

Shocked to see Barbin listed amongst the favourites - really weak startlist. That being said, we’re here to enjoy ourselves, so no pressure for the lads after their great work in Pologne. Go have some fun fellas!
Think we’ll see the top 3 riding away from the field, and splitting the podium amongst themselves, with Borges potentially jumping out for a solid finish. Perhaps Barbin can stick to his coattails in the final burst?

Destribois as team leader says it all, any point earned above the minimum will already be a great achievement in this race.
With the team that we have in this race, we have the obligation to at least be present in the break

Awesome startlist for the big shower classic. Basically a best case scenario for my team. Spilak was always expected to attend, one of Kelderman/Demare was a lock and Gastauer is the only other top guy and he isnt a surprise either.
Only having seven guys here is a bit of an issue as i also wanted to an extra domestique with M Van Stayen and i regret sending Smirnovs with him but i have a solid group of support here too. GVA is possibly the strongest but i also have Sakalou and Sergis here while Becis and Lienhard are also okayish puncheurs at least so at least i dont really have any wasted spots here.
Expectations are huge and i hope that my team is good enough to deliver here. Fingers are crossed

Should be a great opportunity for Slagter to score some Points! Will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Demare is basically Borges if you take away his sprint, so with this startlist I surely hope a Top 5 can be achieved, with Koretzky and Gastauer the two most likely candidates to jump past in the final to aim for a surprise podium. Just be attentive Arnaud!
Arndt and Mager are great support for Demare on a slim squad here, and should themselves look at a decent points-scoring finish. In particular Arndt is known for better results than 76 hill would suggest, which has already be proven in China. I hope he can be on the right side of any late splits.
I mean, Evonik will finish far in front of us anyway, so they might as well win this.

This is Reichenbach's only race as the leader this year so we'll see how he competes. Its not really a true protour caliber field though. Hoping for a top 10.

Another race where our only option of scoring well is crowding that top 50.
