A Bouhanni win is not a Bouhanni win when another rider doesn’t complain about his sprint.

What happened today was just embarassing.. I'm shocked that apparently in Spain they haven't learned to remove/protect bollards correctly after several riders abandoning their races with career-threatening injuries, and having star riders ride straight into them.. but perhaps the worst was a crash at the finish line after a low-flying helicopter caused the barriers to fly into the road.. for any race it's such a big no, and here...

this has been the worst timing of flat tire in the history of flat tires maybe ever

Very bad time for a puncture, but what happened to Porte in 2015 giro was even more mocking

Dear me! I just watched a video clip on twitter... that's a helicopter pilot completely ignoring all common sense and training. Probably not going to be needed for work tomorrow.

Although i will quickly say, don't fire any blame or criticism at ASO or the UCI. This is definitely a dumb pilot not following good practice or guidelines, way beyond the control of those two organising authorities

Yes for the pilot I don't blame the organization, but the bollards situation has no excuse, it is shameful to have race situations like this defined by something the organization and the town has to take care of if they want the race going through there

What the hell is Buchmann doing? Why is he not sharing the workload with Majka and keeping things together for a sprint for Sagan.

Riding for his top 10 instead ffs.

Well, so far he's the best placed rider going for the GC with half a minute on everyone dangerous bar Yates, while being the only climber focusing entirely on this GT.
Furthermore, Bora has spent years on getting him right to this point as their pet project.
And lastly, I wouldn't assume Sagan is mad with half a dozen more opportunities to come while going into this race without expectations.

Will still only be a top 10 in this race. We haven't even hit the proper stages yet. Besides a pull for 2 km would have made it a bunch sprint, and tomorrows stage doesn't look to hard, so he would have had enough time to rest after "a massive effort like that"

I don't see a clear favorite for GC at this vuelta much less a clear top 3 or 5. I think Buchmann could very well ride into the top 5 and maybe even onto the podium. I think the chance of that is worth presevering his energies

I think at best he will finish as 6 place. Still think it was a mistake, this one was a free win, all Bora had to do was have Buchmann work together with Majka for 2 km. Don't think that's what makes the difference in the GC in the end. But we will see Smile

As I haven't watched the stage live, I didn't know this at the time I replied. Buchmann also crashed today in that descent that made Kwiatek lose time and had to ride hard to catch the front group again. He has some injuries that are assessed tonight.

That much for being fresh enough to chase Gallopin, and that should end the discussion.

Nice win for Tony, been some time.

He’s good to start tomorrow’s stage.

Even if you were watching the stage live, you’d only hear about Buchmann’s crash post-stage, there was an aerial shot of some riders falling down but the coverage obly highlighted (and reasonably) Kwiatkowski. He’s not been under the Spanish television radar much, though I think he should get more attention as he’s a consistent rider and the biggest threat in terms of GC ambitions for Kwiato. That is unless Molard pulls a David Arroyo/Oscar Pereiro.

what a sprint from Valverde

Interesting race and in some respects feels like those strange Vueltas of some years ago where anything can happen.

Quintana probably the fav as we know he can recover from the Tour to ride the Vuelta and usually goes better at the Vuelta..

Other questions are more interesting though:

Has S. Yates learnt from the Giro? Can Uran finally land a GT (will be fresh as hardly rode Tour) and of course MA Lopez has the ability?.

Dark horse will clearly be Buchmann imo as he is the only rider to have not taken part in a GT and has limited racing compared to a lot of the other riders a la Horner. But I'd say he more likely to get a podium at best as the above riders are better imo.

Both Pinot and Kelderman may have had options but their loss of time has ruined their chances.

Tomorrow of course will reveal much.
