Long time no seen you! MG is back and to start in the CT division we'll be in Cuba for yet another year. Clasico San Cristobal has been the season opener for CT teams since 2013, and has always been a race for the pure puncheurs. Five different winners in the 5 years that this race has been done, and it's very likely that we'll have a sixth winner, seeing that both past winners that will race tomorrow aren't anymore up to the level of the division, though both start as team leaders here
Year | Winner | 2017 | Anthony Roux | 2016 | Gasore Hategeka | 2015 | Jose Mendes | 2014 | Philip Gaimon | 2013 | Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver |
So who are those riders that will contest for the win here?
The main favourite is from the same country as the last winner. He's not only the biggest favourite for the win in this race, but also the main favourite for the CT Individual Crown. His name? Cyril Gautier
Cesare Di Maggio certainly has the skills to win the race, but the main issue with him is his problems in flat roads. Another italian puncheur, Tommy Zaini, has the same issues as his compatriot, but i really struggle to see him winning this race given his lack of punch for the final sprint and his complete lack of abilities other than going uphill very fast
Ben Nasser and Meyer are two fairly similar riders that surely will compete for the win given their skill-set. Both are strong over hills, have a great kick, very decent sprint, and attacking spirit
Another two riders that are great puncheur for the division, but might lack of bit of strenght in the hills are Siskevicius and Edmondson. They are the same type of riders as Ben Nasser or Meyer, with great kick plus a decent sprint, but not as strong in the climbing side
Teuns and Hoelgaard form an interesting duo for Cerveceria, as neither of them have the skills to win the race, but with a good strategy could get a very nice result from here
The same can be said about Delvaux duo, with Vichot and Kadri. Probably isn't the best race for their skills, but both can be very dangerous if the racing is passive and the win is decided in a sprint
Mehr-Wenige, Teklit, Hategeka, Gougeard, Dieteren, Mendes and Selander are all possible Top5 contenders in a great day, but more likely will be fighting for a Top10 place at best. They have flaws like low acceleration, bad back-ups, or simply not good enough in hills to compete at the best level.
In any case, we are up for an exciting start of the 2018 season, with a great battle between all the great puncheurs in CT for the first 45 points of the season. It's not a lot, but it's always better to start with some scoring
Favourites | HILL | ACC | SPR | RES | Contenders | HILL | ACC | SPR | RES | Gautier | 80 | 77 | 68 | 72 | Teuns | 78 | 72 | 66 | 73 | Di Maggio | 82 | 75 | 65 | 68 | Michely | 75 | 75 | 67 | 69 | Meyer | 79 | 77 | 72 | 71 | Selander | 76 | 76 | 70 | 71 | Ben Nasser | 79 | 77 | 70 | 70 | Haas | 76 | 73 | 68 | 72 | Edmondson | 78 | 76 | 70 | 72 | Gunman | 75 | 75 | 70 | 68 | Zaini | 80 | 70 | 65 | 65 | Mehr-Wenige | 78 | 67 | 66 | 69 | Kadri | 76 | 78 | 74 | 69 | Teklit | 77 | 70 | 64 | 72 | Siskevicius | 78 | 75 | 71 | 72 | Mancuso | 75 | 73 | 65 | 68 | Vichot | 76 | 80 | 66 | 68 | Dieteren | 77 | 66 | 63 | 70 | Hoelgaard | 77 | 74 | 68 | 72 | Costa | 75 | 73 | 65 | 69 |

Some Mendes hype. As former winner he hopefully had something special here. Can't expect a lot but would make it a nice late career performance. |

Excited
Never did that great back in CT but since it's Cuba and we don't rider the Down Under Classic I thought it would be fitting as season opener.
Go Selander!

No love as a potential outsider for WCC's R-G helps stoke his steely determination . Think he has been top 20 in both the previous 2 editions (14th 2017, 16th 2017). More of the same would be a solid start for this mandatory C2 outing.
[Additional note: As WCC quite far down the start-list, have some hopes of an appearance in the BotD, perhaps for one of our young development riders!?].
As far as the CT puncheur field this season, a big step-up in the top 5 ranks this season. Unlike some detractors, I think Di Maggio will have a stellar season. A guy regularly scoring 500+ points in PCT is gonna have a field-day in CT, maybe even joint favourite with Guarnieri for the individual title in my eyes (Gautier 3rd!). However San Cristobal often throws out a slight curve-ball here in Cuba for the season opener, so maybe one of the 78 dudes who has decent sprint/Acc might take this one out?
Excited that we are imminenently kicking-off! Thanks to our reporter as always, in this case Aqua!

Excited for the start even though we are not there in Cuba. Might be better for us looking at that strong startlist

And wow what a quality startlist that is for a continental division race. Should be great to kick things off here. Excited to see how the tandem Teuns and Hoelgaard work, a podium seems difficult, but at least one rider top 10 and the other one fighting for it should be possible.
Gautier must be the favourite, I think. His combination of stats should make him a favourite for any hilly race he does in the CT division. |

For the first time but definitely not the last time this season ill be cheering for Zalgiris. This race can be quite unpredictable but it should suit him well and he definitely deserves his spot on the list of favourites. I'm a bit surprised that Lopez isnt here alongside him but im sure there will plenty of other races where Lopez can shine.
my ama team Signal Iduna (id make them German and use "Signal Iduna" as short name similar to how Hugo Boss is Hugo Boss if other changes require a new db version) is here too without any exception. I hope that the team goes into the breakaway as i will always hope
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Due to the relaxation of PCT qualifying rules I was able to send Dietmar Mehr-Wenige who actually has a chance of getting a top 10 result!
Thanks for the preview Aquarius.

Siskevicius was born in USSR when it was still a thing. Cuba and USSR = friends, Siskevicius = winner?
Checks out

His participation in one day races is limited, Lopez is my designated stage racer

I would never have believed this was a CT startlist 2-3 seasons ago, absolutely crazy.

Super duper hyped for this! Edmondson, Ben Nasser, Gautier and Siskevicius all have a claim to the Roux of 2018 crown, let's see who follows him by starting the season with a win!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."
