Tour de France 2018 | Stage 17

The car holder got his win. Congrats to him

tricky win for the wagon

Great win for Demare and happy FDJ got something out of this Tour. Apparently the accusations of Greipel are completely fabricated and there is no evidence of Demare holding onto a car yesterday. Just to clarify on that.

As you all know, I am the second-last (after Arberg) who likes to see Quintana win but boy it'd be epic if he made G and Froome hit the wall tomorrow and gain chunks of time.

ahaha Quintana with three crowns, in which universe?

Do you think Froome will try a long one or will he be riding for Thomas? I reckon he might try something.

no hes riding for Thomas

Froome is a genuine backstabber so I expect an attack from him. Except if he doesn't have the legs. Then he will say he rode for Thomas but won't take any actual pulls.

There is so much skill involved in cycling, it's a huge element of the sport.

Really. Compared to football, tennis and golf? The skill outweighs the physical element does it? The best bike handler always wins the race does he?

You literally just changed your argument, you said there is no skill involved in cycling, but skill is huge, riding down those descents at that speed is not something a lot can do and even amongst pros (f.e. Alaphillipe dropping riders), catching up every time is a huge waste of energy.

Similarly efficiency in the peloton, if you're having to do even slightly more work closing gaps or fighting for position/losing position/starting climbs too far back or dealing with the increase in speed coming out the corners, it all adds up and by the time you're racing against the world's best climbers, you're already at a major disadvantage, I don't doubt his skills are a huge boost for Sagan, taking him up to just that next level.

Source: I'm a weak bike handler, even a little bit of skills training makes a huge difference. Pfft

Well I beg the differ. Skill is of course a part, but I'd again say mentality is the bigger element here. If you're even mildly scared or just not confident, then that will show. It's not like it's that difficult to ride downhill, everybody can learn it, but you need to believe in yourself and your abilities. Here Froome is a good example as well. He was downright terrible at riding downhill, but then suddenly he became at the very least above decent at descending. He gained trust in his abilities, which add to my theory about his strong mentality.

In terms of mentality you can compare every sport. Look at Quintana, he was destined, but where is he when it really matters. Look at a player like Saviola, Quaresma. Both of them were regarded bigger talents than Messi and Ronaldo, both of whom struggled early on in their career. The thing being about not being able to compare sports comes in to play about when the athlete starts to become a relevant factor. Usually this happens quite a while later in cycling compared to football or other ballgames, this is down to a lot of factors, but I'll try to keep this relatively short and not go into that unless someone requests it, but it's fairly obvious.

Maybe Landa gained weight lol. No but I heard it when he gave the interview to Danish TV. It seemed a slight dig at all the others, and I for one immediately thought "doping". Not saying that's the case though, looking forward to the grand finale tomorrow, hopefully that will give us great expectations for the TT as well.

I think he will ride for Thomas, because it's too risky to try something. The team have to do that, now G has the Tour in his pocket, it's really stupid to try to mix cards at this point
