Man, this race would've been a thriller if it wasn't voor Tom's puncture and time penalty. I don't see Thomas losing this, unless he has a major crisis like Yates in the Giro. |

Froome was swinging all final climb. Podium contenders should have put the boot in much earlier (he had no bottle last 7km, so the crisis was real from far out, not his sometimes pre-attack shadow-boxing). Could have put two minutes in and given buffer for TT.
Recall Thomas turning up to the last ever U23 series race in the UK, and winning as a Junior (and hence restricted gears). Was obviously incredibly talented, but let's say he carried quite a lot of 'puppy fat' at that stage. I thought his London Olympics shape was an impressive transformation. Turns out that was only half-way ....
Would like to believe, he was a nice lad. But I'm an adult and know the reality of the pro cycling game.

On a positive note +1 for the really short stage. An innovation that bears repeating.

I hate to be that guy, but it seems it's hard for me to believe most of these guys. Froome and Thomas well documented. Dumoulin also had a GT transformation from a puncheur/TT guy, and now can ride 2 GTs in 3 months at the top without sweat. Roglic is still fairly new to cycling, is 29 this fall, and has never finished higher than 38th in a GT, now he's amazing. Kruijswijk has this thing where he's nowhere to be found and then every 2 or 3 years he has a race right at the top.
I must just be vastly overestimating the natural predictability of the sport, because none of these transformations make any sense to me.

To be hoenst I love the short stages most of the time, but didn't think this was a good example of one. Still saw the same kind of attacks, same Sky train, just quicker. Basically no attacks from the start. Alpe d'Huez 2011 was the perfect short stage for me because you had guys putting it all out there from km 0. I feel like this basically played out how a longer stage would have.

Kruijswijk though had some consistent progression over years! Similar with Dumoulin! Yes, it is surprising how strong he is after a Giro. But it`s not that he came from nowhere to a top stage racer as Froome or Roglic did.
Thomas might fall into the more consistent progression as well though actually, even if this TdF might be his best ever performance. Wouldn`t he ride for Sky, it was more believable to me though. |

Agree with that, just want to exclude Kruiswijk out of the list cause he's always been a GC rider, and nothing but a GC rider, ever since his neo-pro season (2010)

The stage was fine. It's the sky train that makes even the the most spectacular stages dull

All in.
Hepburn at 31:xx the last finisher. Demare at 29:xx, 4min behind the "gruppetto".
Seeing how some climbers really struggled, it`s hard to imagine, how the sprinters and helpers behind go up the mountains as the TV coverage basically never shows this kind of racing. |

Not saying I think Kruijswijk is suspicious. He showed great talent when he was very young. just saying he's been remarkably inconsistent over the years.

I am not 100% sure without checking. But while his GT results were consistent throughout the years in general, I think some years in between he had issues with health or badly timed injuries.
Guess, if those 2-3 seasons wouldn`t have been impacted, he would be as consistent as it can get.#
2010: 18th Giro
2011: 8th Giro + 41st Vuelta
2012: 33rd TdF
2013: 25th Giro
2014: 15th Tour with Giro DNF
2015: 7th Giro + 21st Tour
2016: 4th Giro + Vuelta DNF
2017: Giro DNF as top10 + 9th Vuelta
Would say only his 12/13 seasons were not as strong really. Otherwise hugely consistent as good GT rider. |

Nice racing by Quintana. If he goes full assault on Friday, who knows what's possible. I heard making up 3 minutes is possible on one single stage, and since the TT is hilly, he might even have a shot there.
Dumoulin and Roglic = Steamrollers! Impressive. Also gotta love Dan the Man this Tour.
