Spoiler @Aquarius - Then I'd have to disband, if they can do TTTs they're not a jandal team!
It's madness time again and of course, rumours are swirling in the cycling world. I'm here to bring you the latest gossip, the ins, the outs, and the top rumours from the peloton. Next on my list is another newly promoted team joining the PCT, the team from New Zealand and South Africa, Xero Racing p/b Octagon!
Of course, the rumours for any new PCT team concern new leaders. Xero has in the past shown a desire to prefer the hills and mountains with a leader and a couple of domestiques in the flat stages and cobbled classics. So that leads, of course, to the most obvious rumour one can make for a South African team who likes to climb: Louis Meintjes. The young South African is yet to ride a race at his peak due to his team manager leaving HQ with the key and all the riders locked inside for the whole year last season, and so he's eager to ride and perhaps a little cautious at giving PT a go just yet. Solution? Maybe it's to join a new home team, a step down. He has many teammates from his Project: Africa team also rumoured to be joining Xero, chiefly among them (and probably a package deal for the PCT outfit) John-Lee Augustyn, the experienced stage racer and in the PCT a domestique deluxe.
Also apparently on the radar of the Lionhearts is Merhawi Kudus, the Eritrean wunderkind climber, for similar reasons as Meintjes. However like the South Africa, the signature of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Espoirs winner will be highly sought after - not least by EA-Vesuvio, which now has Eritel on board, the sponsor of his former team. Perhaps, then, climbing isn't what Xero will end up with after all? Could it be in the hills, with a rider like Tunisian Ben Nasser or the Belgian Claeys? The manager was seen in Belgium a few weeks ago. Or perhaps he was scouring the cobbles, researching a train for our #2 top Xero rumour: Tom David?
The Dauphine and ToNE stage winner has fallen out of favour at Festina, despite his steady development as a PT contender, and is on the transfer list, with Xero staff openly salivating at the prospect of bringing another of New Zealand's top riders in. But that would be quite the shake-up for the climbing team - especially with the release of top cobbler Stijn Vandenbergh.
Another rumour says the talent direction in lieu of a top15 chase or even survival is on the cards - despite the denial of Sporting Director Jackson Hughes. Could Luke Mudgway or Tiesj Benoot be on the cards? The young Kiwi sprinter impressed at the NRS level and has caught the eye of his home team, whilst the Belgian prodigy is of high interest to many teams. Kent Main and Ryan Gibbons are other names tossed about even by Xero management, who seem to prefer to lay low on the matter
Tom Scully could be in with a return to his old team after relegation to the CT with Compal - Xero could do with a new sprinter after the departure of former third place pro Simon Clarke - who is also rumoured to come crawling back. Or would it be the team crawling back. Speaking of Scully, what about his teammate Jesse Sergent, the Feilding-born chronoman who Xero lost a bidding war for last year?
And what about riders on the transfer market that could fit the team. Luke Durbridge? Ahmed Belgasem? Francesco Ginanni? All on the market and of use to Xero. Sam Bewley? Oh wait, he's not for sale? Better luck in a few years Xero. I'd at least bet on you getting him for his last year of racing... |

There must a tactic behind revealing all these rumours. Are you dissuading other teams to bid on these riders or is it a smokescreen to confuse us?

Jandal is always one for the mind-games. He's like the Jose Mourinho of mediocrity
Some of the transfer targets would cost a pretty penny, similar to Mourinho's preferences...

This is probably the biggest insult anyone can say to a Liverpool supporter

@Ripley - We will have to wait and see
@Booker - I actually have no clue how to do mind games beyond reverse reverse reverse etc. psychology which just doesn't work And I'm pretty sure Jose Mourinho is the real Jose Mourinho of mediocrity
@Abhishek - I'm really offended right now, disgusting thing to say. I hope Booker is punished for his libel!
@Aquarius - Got LFC securely in my blood, so the other one hurts more!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Sorry jandal, didn't think you'd be as hurt as you clearly are! I hope I can make it up to you somehow - maybe I could sell you one of my riders for the going market rate?

@whitejersey - I know one, interesting to see who the other is (and if this journo has got our interest in him correct )
@Aquarius - He's mine!
@Booker - You should have known! And that sounds good thanks... if it's for a bit less than market value. Surely "I compared him to Mourinho" is a justified reason to accept my offer above a better one?

Transfers Vol. 1: Leader Loaners Talent... Bye
Four incomings, four outgoings. We start with the departures: Very unfortunately Jonathan Salinas, Tom Diggle and Egidijus Juodvalkis have left the team. The first two in particular will receive proper goodbyes later as we thank them for their service and wish them well for their future teams. We hope to see them back in a Xero jersey one day. Meanwhile Daniel Afoa is off on loan to our now almost partners Equinor for some experience and development in the CT.
Now let's meet the new faces...
Gregory Daniel | 24 | 2.90XP | 27,500*
Our new American loanee from Equinor (formerly Statoil) is a powerhouse of a rider, a true roleur who can ride hard on flats and gradual hills, attack, ride tempo and TT. He is still developing but is already a useful rider to have on our team as a domestique and even breakaway man. We look forward to having his talents around the team and hope he kicks on as a rider with time at our team and in the PCT. Stanislau Bazhkou | 27 | Maxed | 75,000
Our new Belarussian signing is our marquee man so far, and though he's not a big name, he is a big deal. As well as one of the most dedicated and powerful hill and flat domestiques around, he is also capable of putting his talents to good use as a leader in tough races, especially with a time trial. He comes from our lime friends at Isostar, fresh from a promotion season where he scored a solid 143 points (7th best scorer for them) and provided lots of help to their leaders and TTT train. Although we aren't at all known for even being adequate in TTTs, we do hope he can replicate his other performances for us for years to come. FLA | MON | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SPR | ACC | FTR | DH | PRL | 71 | 69 | 75 | 76 | 73 | 75 | 71 | 53 | 63 | 64 | 67 | 61 | 76 |
Callum Scotson | 22 | 2.00XP | No Wage*
A very talented young Aussie, the Rio silver medallist on the track has a mulitfaceted skillset which we can't wait to see employed for us. His most obvious skill currently is what you'd expect from a track rider: a time triallist with a kick and great short effort skills. However not only can he be a valuable part of a leadout or paceline, he also isn't a slouch over the cobblestones - which, given our targets, could be very valuable indeed. FLA | MON | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SPR | ACC | FTR | DH | PRL | 68 | 56 | 62 | 72 | 67 | 66 | 67 | 69 | 66 | 74 | 67 | 63 | 74 |
Joseph Areruya | 22 | 1.00XP | 260,000
We have finally secured a big home talent. The young Rwandan has been one of the best riders on the U23 circuit in Africa and around the world recently and we'd love to snap him up. We don't know how fast or in what direction he'll develop but currently he is a powerful rider on any non-cobbled terrain as well a good sprinter. Primarily we see him as a punchy climber with an engine to back it up but who knows?

Stan the Man is where he belongs. In the PCT, mixing it up in the hilly ITT races. Gotta love his performance on "home soil" at the Tour of Slovenia already. Can't wait to see you in action.
Also: ARERUYA!

@Croatia - Yep, hopefully Stan the Man can get some points for himself with his awesome statset - maybe Xero's first ever diesel guy And yeah, hope we can put on a great show and stay up! And yes, Areruya
@trekbmc - Yes, can't wait to have him maxed - and whooping Kwiatek's ass And yeah, planning is key but if I can get it right Bazhkou will be gold!
@whitejersey - Thanks He sure is!
@Abhishek - Cheers! Yep, Areruya signed with both eyes on the long-term - hopefully some announcements in the next week that make our short-term at least as bright, fingers crossed! And you know me, I'm a generous guy
