Once again ready for the season highlight for all amateur riders, the National Championships road race. I am starting for the 4th time this year and hope to get to the finish line for the first time, but the more than 200 kms on a hilly course will hurt. Would have finished last year if it wasn't for a puncture near the end, so I hope for a revenge now. Wish me luck.

I used to watch it as spectator from time to time. Last was 2016. Always some great events and well organized as well from a neutral view.

When we arrived at the hotel back then, Burghardt, Greipel, Sieberg, Politt and 2-3 others just left the same for a training ride. Pfft
Next day we only saw their wifes and children as the riders got out early.

Weather probably not on your side neither right now.

Decided to upgrade my cassette from 12-25 to 11-28. All Shimano components and checked compatability first. After indexing gears the chain feels really tight when on the big cog and smaller back cogs. Didnt replace chain as its not done many miles. Any thoughts on what may be wrong?

Your chain is stretched? I would recommand to buy a new chain

I take it you mean the chain is too tight when in the big ring and in your easiest gear i.e. biggest cog at the back? If I’ve read that right you will likely need an extra chain link or even two to accommodate the wider range cassette. That said you could just ignore that particular combination as it’s cross chaining anyway.

Might well have read your exact situation wrongly so correct me if I’m wrong! Smile

Im not sure its stretched. Big cog - big cog combo is fine even though you're not supposed to. Its big cog - small cog (back) where something is not right. When on the front big cog the last 3 or 4 small cogs at back are extremely hard to change into and that's where it feels like chain is under a lot of load or about to snap.

Also i should note i dont feel this when manually testing while on bike stand.

Ah, I see. Is the chain rubbing against the two jockey wheels in this combination in a very (too) horizontal position causing the resistance? If so it might then be the opposite is the problem and the chain is too long?! Mind you that should be more of an issue if you were in the little ring and on the smaller cogs at the back :/ I'd bike shop it! Grin

Here is after the third climb

it's a great experience, all 3 sides are amazing for many reasons, Malaucene one is very panoramic in second half, but bald part is lot less than other side, that make this Mountain so special.
Close to the top the wind is incredibly strong, was hard to maintein the position on the bike

Unfortunatly we had none following us for making some pictures during the ride, so I'm checking ones from Professional photographers

During the week in Provence I have to point the road along "Gorges de Nesque" (D942 between Monieux and Villes-sur-Auzon) like one of the nicest I ever rode. It's simply wonderfull!

Many good riders here so could ask little bit opinion from experience. Let say that there are 2 laps, each 50 km long, one is almost completely flat (like few meters here or there overall), second one is in little bit more hilly (nothing big but short type ups and downs with total climb (and same amount of downhill) ~350-400 m.
So my question would be - same rider with same bike, weather conditions (wind) and fitness level would have same average speed for both laps or these hills would have some impact even with all downhills available?

If you have no wind, the flat road is obviously faster, but thats still down to your riding style. Some people struggle to stay in the same position for a long time, while others like it that way. Also the weight is a thing to consider. Both riders could put out a average of 250W, but if they're both 80kg, that will improve the flat time, but if they're both, let's say 50kg, that would benefit the hillier time.

+1 what Paul is saying...talking about average, flat one should be faster
