Croatia: Someone has to go and Lo Ciceros wage will never fit on a CT team and after this season I'm not sure if I'm willing to take the gamble of paying the fin in order to be able to sell him...
knockout: I was very happy to get him maxed the same season as Manninen as that is what he was signed for 
I really really want Emils and Matti to destroy CT together, but should things change you will of course be first to know

 Ingvar Omarsson 
The Icelandic champion did a great job showing himself and preparing for Gautier all season.
In terms of results he only got a single top 10 when he finished 6 on the first stage of Tour de Pologne, but in terms of visibility he have been one of the best on the team and his role have generally been very fixed.
Future:
We would love to retain his services.
 Paavo Paajanen
Being part of the team around Gautier didn't give Paavo many opportunities to ride for himself.
Nevertheless he did some good work often being on of the last riders with Cyril.
Starting the season being visible in the European B Championships and getting a 2nd place on stage 8 of Deutschland Tour he gave it a good go.
Future:
Of course Paave will always be a good asset for us.
 Yoann Paillot
Our French TT-engine had a solid season, though not quite good enough on his bad days.
Still with a win and two further podiums plus a big share of our TTT-results he was a valuable asset.
Future:
Paillot in CT would be great, though his current wage is a bit steep for a pure TT'er.
Samuel Pökälä
While Pökälä also has a good share of our TTT-success in especially Monterry he did not quite have the season we had dreamt about after his winter training.
Still he was a valuable helper and did get a few points along the way so all-in-all his season is approved.
Future:
There is no scenario where Pökälä is not offered a new contract!
 Raimondas Rumsas
This young Lithuanian waas with us on a stagiare contract and have already developed a lot.
His season highlight clearly being part of our TTT-squad in Copenhagen-Malmö.
Future:
He is a great future TT-talent, but downgrading from PCT to CT is a puzzle...

Our Belarussian ox was strong everywhere (as usual) without bagging a huge result for himself.
One of the best helpers around, never disappointing be it flat, hills, mountain or TTT's he was a great assett for us all season through.
Future:
While we have been very happy with his services these past few seasons he is not getting any younger and we need to slim the team so he will probably be leaving with our best wishes for the future.
Sami Tiainen
Last season Tiainen was one of the big surprises showing himself as a world-class leadoutman.
This season he had roughly the same role, but did not really deliver.
Future:
It seems unlikely that he'll find a spot on our CT-squad.
Oskari Vainionpää
For the second year in a row we had Vainionpää on a stagiaire contract.
And for the second year in a row he showed th right kind of spirit chasing breaks and making the most of the opportunity.
Future:
It looks like there will be a fierce battle for the talent spots on the team next season but Oskari is in the mix.
Jukka Vastaranta
A fading legend.
Jukka have been of massive importance for our project and Finnish cycling in the last decade. This season he was taking a step down the hierarchy as he doesn't have what it takes to be a team leader any more.
He didn't do much in the races where we needed him to help lift the team. but really shined with aggressive riding in our wildcard races.
Sprinting to top 10's in the Vuelta and almost winning the mountain jersey in Northern Europe makes him leave the biggest stage in style.
Future:
He is a hard man to let go, but next year there are no room for fillers for pure sentimental reasons so we'll probably try to convince Jukka to take a seat in the team car instead.
 Trols Vinther
It's hard to shine as a lead-out man when your sprinter isn't up for the task.
Vinther tried his best but never managed to find his level from last season.
Future:
Last year we said "Never change a winning team". This year they haven't been winning much so we'll see what happens.
He's a good leadout man but w only have so many spots on the team next year.

Noooo Vastaranta  would be sad to see him going, though if he takes min-wage I could see him being a valuable asset - same goes for Paillot, which I'd reconsider keeping as his wage is quite nice for an 80 main stat guy that could score results all the way into HC even, if you plan around him

jandal: Having to let riders go is definitely the worst part of relegating!
Omarsson is awesome and Emilia was a big part of him moving up a category in job security.
Croatia: The problem is that even on 50k he would take up a spot on the team that could be used by someone stronger or a good prospect for the future. had we stayed in PCT he would probably have gotten a renewal, but in CT it's tougher as there is fewer spots on the team.
I'm not saying Paillot won't get a contract I'm just saying that I would prefer him slightly cheaper as I think there are bigger pointscorers around with that wage

Major commiserations for the relegation this year. Your team underperformed and you really didn't deserve it. It's just the tough luck of the draw. You still have a good core of Finns though, and I'm sure you'll be back up before you know it.

The History of Finnish Cycling
It is no secret to anyone that we see our team and Finnish Cycling closely intertwined. At least in recent years and in the future.
Finland might not be recognized as a big cycling nation but every single season since the very beginning of the ManGame there have been at least one Finnish rider in the highest division!
This piece will give you an overview of the MG-history of Finnish cycling.
The first few years Jussi Veikkanen was the only Finn in the highest division, but already in 2008 a name appeared for Agritubel in the continental division that would change the face of Finnish cycling for a decade to come: Jukka Vastaranta.
A number of riders have tried following in the footsteps of Jussi and Jukka but without much success. First in 2008 Matti Helminen, who got a grand total of 1 season and 0 points.

As Veikkanen stepped down from PT to C-division in 2010 we saw Vastaranta take the step the other way really marking a change of generations despite Veikkanen getting a few solid years on the lowest level before retiring in 2013 only to be lured back on the bike for the first incarnation of our team in 2014.
That same year (2010) saw the start of the closest thing to a 3rd successful Finn in the pre-Valio era as Matti Pajari got to ride three seasons gathering at least as many points.
The final year of Pajaris career he was part of Team Finnair-Nordea, who rode in D2 with very little success as the result.

Sadly the individual rankings from that division and year seems lost in the archives and we can only conclude that the team in total scored 558 pts and no single rider scored more than the 195 pts that would have earned them a spot in the individual top 20.
Unfortunately we have not been able to retrieve pictures of Kananens valiant attack to take 2nd place in stage 1 of Tour de Picardie - something he even translate into a 2nd place in the GC, which is easily the standout Finnish result of that team.

Apart from that great result highlights was a few low stage top 10's by Alaluusua and Pajari alongside a number of unsuccessful breakaways it's clear however that the Finnish contingent of the points score is tiny at best.
The folding of Team Finnair-Nordea after one season also marked the end of the careers of all Finnish riders involved in the project.
That same year was the seat of the biggest Finnish win to date as Vastaranta won Rund un Koln. Sadly also the pictures of this great achievement is lost as are the pictures of Veikkanen winning the prologue of 2012's edition of Paris - Nice.
The only two PT wins for Finland actually.
2013 was a step down for Finnish cycling with only 2 full-time contracted riders in Vastaranta and Tiainen with a certain Olli Kulppi making his debut as stagiaire for Quickstep, also taking the double-NC along the way.
Nevertheless Vastaranta put in another season scoring sufficient to a PT rankings top 100.
And then in 2014 a new team with at least a side-focus on Finland arose: Team Live Nation.
The team announced that Jukka Vastaranta should be the team leader, but in the end Vastaranta took another year at PCT level where he for the first time managed to finish in the top 50 of individual rankings while also winning a stage at Tropicale Amissa Bongo.
More important was the start of a dedicated development project that saw Pökälä as Vastarantas replacement in PT as well as Paajanen riding in PCT.
As for Team Live Nation they had one of the worst seasons ever and were close to following the example of Finnair-Nordea, but managed to salvage a new license and start a rebuild in affiliation with the dairy industry.

2015 was the year Vastaranta finally got to ride for a Finnish team and with wins in Sallanche and Ruta America del Sur he showed himself as the leader Finnish cycling needed lifting the team to promotion.
2016 was another good year for Vastaranta, mainly thanks to Tour de San Luis but now the time has come where a new generation needs to step up as age starts taking its toll on the legendairy Finn.

Kulppi spent two years loaned out to Evonik-ELKO in 2015-16 learning from Boonen and Greg van Avermaet and impressing along the way with a 22nd place in his Roubaix debut 2015 and a youth jersey same year in De Panne as well as a top 20 in Strada Appia Antica 2016.

In 2017 Kulppi would be riding his first year in a leading/free role after having impressed as part of the team around Tom Boonen and Greg van Avermaet, Pökälä looked stronger than ever with Manninen to hone his sprinting skills in the service of Lo Cicero.
2017 was the first season without Vastaranta on full strength and that showed on the amount of Finnish points.
We did however get an addition to the list of winners as Kaislavuo took a stage win in Benelux Challende wearing Reddit-colours.
Also Manninen scored his first points and while it doesn't really count as a win his youth jerseys in Baltic Chain Tour and Barbados are historic and holds the promise of Manninen being the one to take over after Vastaranta in the years to come as the big Finnish profile.

As a further highlight it's worth noticing that 2017 was the season ever with most different point scorers proving that our project is rewarded by much bigger depth than in the past.

The second table ranks rides by their average points output per season. It's no huge surprise that Vastaranta tops these rankings quite superiorly as he also holds the top 7 for Finnish points in a season.
One thing that is worth noticing though is trusted helper Paavo Paajanen clocking in at 2nd place in these rankings - he probably deserves more recognition than he have been given always riding in the shadow of stronger punchers.

After a disappointing season it's only natural to put the teams future in question so we have spoken with the teams current main sponsors to hear about their thoughts on the season that have passed and their future plans.
Valio: Obviously we're disappointed to see the team relegate. That was certainly not what we had in mind going into the season!
DeLaval: We completely agree. Seen over the course of the season this team simply didn't perform well enough.
Valio: However we also have to say that we're mainly in this for two reasons: Promoting Finland and the dairy industry, and we think the team have done well on those two factors at least.
Finnish cycling have never had a wider base and we think the groundwork is laid for even further improvement in the future despite the flagship relegating.
DeLaval: Initially we went into this partly due to the teams side focus on Sweden - something that have decreased these last couple of years bringing it to a point where there's even doubt as to whether or not there will even be a Swede on the team next year.
Nevertheless the team have done so much to bring goodwill to the entire dairy industry so that have more than compensated for the lack of Swedish leadership material.
Valio: Also it's important to stress that it was mainly a certain lame Italian that made this situation arise - not the local talent!
So does that mean that you will continue your involvement with the team?
DeLaval: Of cows we will!
Valio: We are dairy happy to let the project cowtinue!!
As a team we are very happy to still have the trust of our sponsors and we will do our best to reward it by promoting straight back up.

I love the sponsors keeping the faith, especially as it means that jersey may return Go Valio to smash the CT 2018!

Getting nominated here is as simple as it sounds.
The two previous years it was won by Olli Kulppi loaned out to Evonik.

As always the entry to this voting is secured by being named Bull of the Month sometime over the year.
That means that we will see a new winner this season after Chris Anker Sørensen leaving for Carlsberg and Lo Cicero not managing to get a nomination.
Manninen topped the Bull of the Month count by winning four times while Gautier won twice.

Without further ado we go on the the awards as all contract negotiations are finalized and we start looking towards the next season:
This category saw a battle between those not an a full regular contract meaning Spotifys Faglum Karlsson vs the three stagiares.
And the winner is:

Marcus Faglum Karlsson, Spotify-Haglöfs
While he wasn't as aggressive taking his chance as w would have hoped he put in some solid efforts, especially in the Tour de l'Avenir, and gets an award to take home to Sweden with him.
Karlsson got 64 % of the votes, Vainionpää and Rumsas both 18 % while Kanerva didn't get a single vote.
Three nominees, of which two had impressed with real results opened of for a good battle.
However in the end the winner got as much as 79 % of the votes:

Sprinting among the best in a GT beats going in breaks and taking a C2HC stage win.
Finally the main award, where the nominees count everyone named Bull of the Month over the season.
With more nominees and no one one the team really delivering a stellar season this was the closest award with the winner getting 50 % of the votes:

The future of Finnish cycling seems secure with such a young and strong sprinter. Hopefully he'll be in contention for this award in many seasons to come.
2nd place went to Kari Brynjolfsson after his great classics win while Pökälä was the only one not getting any votes.
