Always an unpredictable race, the Rund um Koln brings a mixture of hills and flat and plenty of candidates for the victory. From Puncheurs such as Hagen, Schumacher, Bakelandts, Van Garderen, Ponzi, Ulissi, and Wegmann, to Sprinters such as Swift, Bennati, Bewley, Boonen and Ventoso. Leonardo Duque is the defending champion, having sprinted past Trofimov, Reimer and a fading Hagen to win last year.
Plenty of attacks early on to get in the breakaway.
Bertogliati, Bar, Guldhammer, Echarri, Kadri and Goss lead, but are set to be joined by Rubiano Chavez, Reynes, Duyn, Vandousselaere, Honkisz, Kocjan, Jallays, and Boeckmans.
Wiggle, Pearl and Vesuvio are amongst those to control the gap early on, before Wiggle change tactic and send Diggle forward to bridge to the breakaway.
But with 80km to go, a combination of UBS, Milka, Pearl and Festina have brought the break back.
This just invites new attacks. Stronger attackers too: Van Stayen, Paterski and Ballan
Jallays, Guldhammer and Diggle also join in - all 3 having played a part in the initial breakaway. The 6 man group work well together and start to build a gap. 3'40 with 54km to go
In the peloton a group of 21 is dropped - seems to be bad positioning on a narrow stretch of road. Biggest names out the back are sprinter Ben Swift, and Wiggle's Bertagnolli
The break's lead is 3'40 with 41km to go as Ljungblad and Pozzato move forward to chase for Festina
Not long later though. It all kicks off. First Hagen, then Bakelandts, Trofimov, Schumacher and more
15 attackers in all:
Bakelandts Efimkin Ghisalberti Gilbert Hagen Kessler Levarlet Ponzi Rodriguez Oliver Schumacher Trofimov Ulissi Van Garderen Vastaranta Wegmann
Chasing them, about a minute later, are
Albasini Caruso Leezer Ljungblad Mehr-Wenige Pozzato Rast Steensen
The aggressive racing doesnt end, and as the 15 continue to attack each other, the break of 6 stands no chance. Hagen charges past them with 21km to go.
Van Garderen follows, and presses on into the final 20km
The two link up, and then are joined by a 2nd B&O rider in Guldhammer
It comes back together though, and my now its clear that one from these 21 will win. The 8 further back are continuing to attack, but are losing ground.
Now the tactics begin. 10km to go.
Theres some good sprinters in this group if it comes down to that:
Van Stayen 80 Vastaranta 75 Wegmann 75 Ponzi 74 Trofimov 74 Bakelandts 73 Hagen 73 Ulissi 73 Ballan 71 Van Garderen 70 Paterski 70 Guldhammer 70
Attack!
Welle Jallays tries his hand. One of the weakest of the 21, so maybe he will be underestimated?
The teams with 2 riders here take responsibility. Guldhammer, Diggle and Ballan relay to chase.
Ballan doing a good job at holding the gap, but with 4km to go, it doesnt help the team that Trofimov is right at the back of the group. Ponzi and Hagen also right back there
2km to go. 16 seconds
But approaching the final kilometre, Jallays is fading. The sprint is off
Taking the final turn, Schumacher has passed Jallays and leads. Trilux, Pearl and Van Garderen all strung out right behind him.
But challenging Schumacher is Jukka Vastaranta!
The Finn moves past .. and wins!!
2nd for Schumacher, then Hagen, Bakelandts, Ponzi and Diggle. A real shock victory for Vastaranta.
