Giro d'Italia 2018

List is pretty short, but 3 weeks of the Giro will have many crazy developments ahead. I'm sure we might have to add some new names to above list in due time. Ben O'Connor anyone?

Louis Meintjes... now that’s the next Zubeldia.

What happened to Jack Haig today? Second to last? Shock

Unfortunately I won't watch the race live during week days and that kills me Angry

As a Portuguese DAAAAMN JOSÉ GONÇALVES now I get why I haven't seen him at all before Romandie Smile Froome wasn't quick and I expected that, but of course the crash slowed him down more.. Yates and Pozzovivo the surprises, especially Pozzo I sure hope this is his year, I'd love to see him finally make it into the podium

No, Froome easily wins, the others do not have a chance!

Prepare for Dumoulition

Dumoulin is the new Wiggins. But Froome will not wait in the mountains!

For some reason I just can't get excited for the Giro, despite the Zonc, Sappada, Jafferau and Cervinia stages. But perhaps it is because I'm already studying very hard for an exam that's in 2019. (It is normal in my country if you want to go to a very good uni.) Maybe I will get the mood by the time Zonc comes.

Froome looks like he just lost the Giro before even starting because the results show that he is injured imo.

He lost the Giro before even starting when he got caught doping.

That would be nice but don't want to curse him, he's in my Velogames!

Crashes so far that I've heard of that are relevant:

Ciccione pre race but hopefully a bit of recovery time and not too bad (yes he's also in my Velogames but decided to leave him in after this) https://twitter.c...4444555266

Siutsou - pre stage recon -> DNS

Lopez - pre stage recon not supposed to be that bad but bandaged leg etc.

Froome - heavy one https://www.insta...=wielerman

Did I miss anything?!

Contador had no problem in 2011. He won 2 stages, gifted 2 more, won the points jersey and won with more than 6 minutes.
And he did all that with an extremely weak team. That was perhaps the most dominant performance on any GT.

I thought Froome was the biggest favourite before the start (But Dumoulin close too and don't underestimate Aru, Lopez, Chavez and Pinot) but it looks like he is injured.

There's a bit of a 2014 Tour feeling to Froomes Giro run in.
Not perfoming in the warm up races and crashing in supposedly safe situations. I call a DNF coming up.

Chavez and Bennett not a great start, but I still believe! Unfair on Tom to call him a Wiggins given he has beaten every top climber in the world (maybe not Bardet and a couple of others) in a summit finish and is clearly much more of a climber than Wiggins, even if he isn't as good as normal Froome in the mountains, still a stage racer in my view.

I can't see why not?

Startline money from the Israelis and he is there, they won't care if he abandons in a week. Can't believe he won't get them if he is injured/crashes out...

What the hell are you talking about? Wiggins won Tour de Romandie, Paris-Nice, Dauphiné, TDF, OL and WC in ITT, etc.

But Tom didn’t have a team mate in top shape to carry him up the mountains while destroying Nibali/Quintana’s legs

Dumoulin is not the new Wiggins, nor is he anything like Wiggins.

For
1) Dumoulin was already good at hilly stages early in his career, and pretty quickly did a top 5 and top 3 in Suisse before his first GT result (Vuelta). Unlike Wiggins who suddenly learned to climb out of nowhere at later age
2) Dumoulin attacked in multiple mountain stages and mountain finishes, in both Vuelta and Giro. And by attack I mean not TT to the top, but actual accelerations. I have to the day never seen Wiggins do that. Best part was vs Froome on Cumbre del Sol and Oropa ofcourse
3) Dumoulin has done all this, pretty much by himself without any sort of help from his team. Wiggins needed to be paced to the top by Froome or other Sky teammates

So how DARE you insult Dumoulin by comparing him with mr. Strange Package was not for me

Dumoulin is way more allround and probably a bit less good in TT

What the hell are you talking about? Wiggins won Tour de Romandie, Paris-Nice, Dauphiné, TDF, OL and WC in ITT, etc.

Wiggins won a TDF where many riders were better in the mountains, with a controlling team, only 3MTF with none of them HC (plus one was Peyragudes which is a short climb after Peyresourde, where he could have lost the Tour if Froome wanted) and nearly 100km in TTs. Only 3 proper mountain stages with debatably La Planche (where he did get dropped by Froome) as a fourth.

Dumoulin won a Giro with much more strong competitiors, was often isolated which is a major point given Wiggins had Froome to tow him, had problems timing his craps, 4 summit finishes, winning one! One also uphill but short, one not long after a summit and with no descent as well, and another one with 10-15 undulating kilometres in it. Only 70km in ITT as well.

He has also won summit finishes in both other GTs, one from a break granted but the other one from the favourites and being marked since he was high on GC.

Dumoulin could win one-week stage races if he targeted them, especially with so many ITTs because everyone wanted Wiggins to win their race. Dumoulin has won WC so I don't see your point, especially given this isn't about Dumoulin's ITT skills, it's about how I see him as a better climber than Wiggins and much more of a proper stage racer, even if he isn't a top climber and TTist in the vein of Froome.

EDIT: Double Zabel'd

Ofc, unforgotten that win of the olympic mountain time trial in London 2012
