After the first stage, where he clearly wasn't feeling it, PENASA IS BACK BABY! A bit bummed he couldn't take more than 29 seconds off Valls, but that man is a CT force.
Congrats to Aquarius thus far, Valls has been a beast as always. And thanks to tsmoha for the outstanding reporting, very clear to read and love the time splits.
Well done to Vien's crowd-sourced troops, and to Solis for making the home fans and Yellow Jersey proud. I'm guessing he may end up with a top 5 if he keeps the consistency high.
Unlucky for Kentaurus and ryant with their leaders going down, Tvetcov having a much tougher go of it this season...

Aight, Krasnoperov collapsing was to be expected. Maybe he's saving some energy for the TT?
As long as Anacona holds on I'm more than fine with this. |

A shame that Valls didn't react earlier to Cataldo/Bennett move, because that was a stage win lost. At least he was third and took a few bonus seconds to increase his lead to almost 1 minute, while also placing himself as the lone leader of Points classification.
The drop of Nakane was expected, especially when he was the one closing the first Cataldo/Bennett move, but also has made us lose a place in Teams classification

I salute you Mr. Bardet. To be 5th at this point, in this field is amazing. And with a ride like this to almost getting on the stage podium! He will lose some time in the TT, that is for certain. But I can have no complaints so far.
Congrats to Tamijo on the win and also to Jandal, for finally have some luck in the mountains
Thanks for the report tsomha

Finally...Cataldo has been aggressive but lost from it, but this time it was perfect. Back in top 10 where we need him to be.
Thanks for the report(s) tsmoha
Estifanos Kebede lost a lot today, hope that will allow his to go for the points KoM on stage 5, seems he is motivated for it.

Good from Bennett, shame about the wheel sucking Italian denying him the stage win Still need more of these moves to get the goal and acceptable points, especially with the other two not firing. On the right track now, but need bigger gaps on Bardet and co.

PCM and TTs... Name one more iconic duo. Krasnoperov disappointing heavily, doubt he's gonna rack up a lot of points given his stamina and tomorrow's brutal stage. All hopes on Anacona then!
Great reporting though tsmoha, love having something to read before bed time |

So a stage where Valls should have won "easily" being the best timetrialist of the healthy climbers, ends up with Valls in 38th place, being beaten by a 72 rider like Finetto... That must have been at least a -3 Thank god that Penasa did have an awful day also, so we even increased the lead after this stage
And also the rest of my team decided to have a day-off and kill our chances to score anything in the Teams classification...
Tbh, at least this awful day came in the timetrial, where Valls couldn't lose too much time - although if Penasa had been in a good day he would have taken the lead from us - instead of the last stage, where a bad day can make you lose tons of minutes. Last year Valls was fourth before the last stage and had a terrible day which saw him slip to 8th at the end. Hopefully he has "learned" from that and can have a great day tomorrow to defend the lead and take the GC win. I would say also that why not a stage win to close the race, but it's most likely going to the breakaway, although we could have the team to bring a breakaway back, so we'll see.
Thanks anyway for the reports tsmoha, as they are still great

Conditions change, two stages already taking a toll on GC riders, or just PCM? Will we ever find out?

Hope that was more Bennett with his mojo back rather than mostly luck of the draw - back in completed goal status, now to push on tomorrow to good race status!

Thank you for the beautiful reports tsmoha, firstly.
Second, I have to commiserate with Kentaurus. When you built a roster with someone as highly rated and paid as Eastman, you expect results. He’s been tragic all season and I just feel for the guy.
Third, Penasa doing Penasa things, making up some critical distance in the final 500 meters in stage 3, only to show up for stage 4 as his alter ego, hot garbage. But really, how could I not be pleased with his performance thus far, now for the Italian Stallion to ride away from the field in an epic solo breakaway on stage 5. Hopefully he’s finished with his -4 days after the masterclass in stage 2.
Also, Pozzo has quietly worked himself into contention for minor depth points while serving as main domestique, much appreciated Mattia.

Wow that's hard to take.. I know his TT wouldn't be good but loosing 2 minutes and almost a place in the Top10 was unthinkable. Just hoping tomorrow he'll be in his best and try to climb a few spots back.
Thanks tsmoha once again for the great report!

The worst part is it isn't just Eastman, Chaves my other "monster" CT rider has done very little so far as well. And without any real sprinter on my team, I have to be getting points from these guys.

My two cents on Chaves:
To be honest Chaves has been unlucky so far (only five real hilly race days (with two Euskal stages and no cacak) so far imo), and Eastman is less defendable - he is screwed by the one-note C2HC calendar though (tbh not surprised he's not as good as Valls and PPP at pure climbing anyway, but this is weird). Eastman's best CT race
If you think of Chaves he's had:
CSC - 4th - Did well, looked strong, but Roux (probably strongest so far) was stronger. Got spent using his attack. Not usually the best indicator of CT strength either.
Gisborne - 11th - Not a very decisive race in the end but Chaves should have done better given Bennett won showing the Mon/hil ratio. Missed the attacks so did look off yes.
San Marino - 9th (?) - Again second best to Roux, break took up the first spots.
Cacak - 4th - Did well but not a decisive race - I wouldn't use it as a measure for hilly strength.
Euskal - 2nd - Consistently the best, would have won but for a freaky Ukrainian.
Basically he looked like the second strongest (when he could arguably be anywhere from 1st-4th depending on the course) in San Marino and San Cristobal, and the second or maybe even strongest in Euskal (imo, but Brataschuk also was very strong). Cacak he didn't have the acc to win but in that sense did well - surely raced smarter than Roux who could have actually won or got a podium by waiting
Whilst the results haven't been there I wouldn't say he's looked worse than he should be - only Gisborne is a disappointment in terms of strength as I don't count Cacak. I'd say only my guys really have got reward for their continued strength. Surely the remaining races (bar possibly GPC and Zuri) should see him get some results finally. He's in a tricky spot of not being able to beat Roux, Boily, Vichot or Haavardsholm in a sprint, except after a really tough day, and not being as purely strong as VDH. The only one of the top five/six without a situation he's the top at - on everyone's best day his best shot is solo (as he almost did in CSC), make the race too hard for the four with big ACC, or beat only VDH in a sprint.
I get how strong riders look doesn't measure his results, but I wouldn't write him off at all. I get he hasn't delivered in points yet which must hurt, it hurts me to see him not be rewarded
