Vuelta a Espana Discussion

Decent first real mountain stage from my team. Velits riding well, Kulhavy being a great help. Hirt really solid. Just too bad Giogieri crashed out, will be surely a loss. Still happy to see us leading the team competition.

Damn, shame, but seeing how early Nepom had to work, it probably is better to have lost the jersey for now.

Arndt rode very well in these last two stages. Maybe even too well for my liking Embarassed Also Bevin had a surprisingly good climb there.
On the other hand, a Top 15 overall certainly wouldn't look too bad compared to entering the KoM lottery.

Pluchkin in red before the first mountain test is very interesting, as the pressure is on Schleck now! Congratulations on the stage, fjhoekie Smile

Pressure? Nah!

Finally, the first win for Vesuvio all season. A shame that it had to wait until May, but no surprise that Andy Schleck is the one to end the drought.

A very assured performance through this Vuelta so far. 5th in the TTT, 9th in a sprint stage, 2nd in a hill stage, and now winning in his preferred terrain. A long way still to go, and plenty of time still needed to be gained, but very encouraging and nice to get a foothold into all three classifications, and keep those ranking point tallies ticking over.

My team is set up very well to defend the jersey. Plenty of good riders to set the pace, and chase down other attacks - though I do much prefer it when Schleck goes first, like today. I'd like to see Konig in the Top 20, with Goos and Kirsch in the Top 30 - but those are secondary priorities to supporting Schleck.

A shame though for Eritel to see that Eyob has picked up another injury in a Grand Tour for Strava, after having an injury end his Giro also.

Ffs Keizer...beaten by Preidler, Arndt, Nesset, Vosekalns, Brambilla and Olivier...not the kind of riders you need to be behind when fighting for the top10 in a GT.

That said at least Olivier gained on Galta, König, VdB, Goos, Haig which is his kind of opponents.

At the front Schleck showing his skills already. Just the best in the high mountains.

Monsalve surprisingly strong with also Lecuisinier limiting the loss and I think able to beat some of the earlier riders on later stages.

Regarding the stage itself, seeing Olivier was not in the front early and then coming back, I guess he was getting some water at a shit moment on the uphill already of the final climb. Not the best idea that late. And also shows that Koep is not strong enough for late support even though being 41st today is pretty good and for the moment onto his triple top50 aim.

Though more of a desaster for Schleck actually as he had the same problem with a much better support crew.

Regarding the report: Nice read and you gave a very good overview with all those time gap information.
Regarding the DNS/DNF, the "200" looks weird. Just add DNF there instead I think.

I would like to change our attention from crashes to breakaways, deal guys?

Ludvigsson already two crashes and not our other mountain helper Blikra crashed aswesl seems like they are not injured atleast.

Abal doing a decent first mountainstage, it looked very good before the last 1.5 kms then he started to struggled quite much.

Would have liked Lecuisinier to stay with the group ahead of him, but I guess we can't have it all. Losing out to Velits while also Hirt performs well is a bit of a letdown though.

Also seeing Novak crash for the second time in two stages hurts. He would have been a good bet for a rider in the region of 25, but this time obviously injured. His crash wasn't mentioned but he was clearly on his ass in one of the first crashes (no. 66).

Atleast Affonso gave it a go.

Yup too bad about it. Chetri went into the breakaway and I imagine Eyob might just well be as promiment as Chetri. Hoping this has no lasting effect.

Gratz to the win, SN. What a performance by Andy already, just a beast as soon as the road goes uphill for more than 10k.

Nice to see us in the botd again, although we lost the kom jersey. That's all our points for now. Hoping for the odd breakaway win until the bitter end.

Could be a great battle between Schleck and Pluchkin here!

Haig not great. But mentioned Wink maybe it's good to lose in first week. We need breakaways anyway.

Ya, was a trick to seperate the DNF today from DNF earlier stages. If it is a problem I will try to change it going forward.

Ofc he lost to Preidler Grin

tbh I had hoped Preidler would loose time and go into breaks, but I can't really complain about him overachieving

Guess we solved that decent, with Guldhammer being the strongest. Very surprised to see Galta fade away that badly towards the end, as it looked great for him as well for a long time. A pity Guldhammer couldn't keep up with Lecuisinier and Machado all the way to the line, but admittedly he isn't better in the mountains, so all in all a decent result.

And Schleck looks like he wants to leave no room for doubt coming to who is the best climber. Congratulations, SN! But with seven riders within a minute at the top, this still has the look of a thrilling Vuelta.

Thank you for another quality report, Tamijo Smile

Two poor performances from Machado. I was hoping his good hill stat could be used to gain time on other contenders instead of losing, while the mountain stage could have been a bit more lenient to us too.

Congrats, though, fj and SN. I guess it's nice to see the Schleck vs Pluchkin battle in full flight right from the first week onwards. Madrazo still there obviously while Monsalve keeps his Giro level and raising some eyebrows.

Very detailed reports Tamijo, thanks!

Who is this rider and what has he done with Yonathan Monsalve? Shock

Very impressed so far with his performance, our pattern of stage results goes 4th, 3rd, 2nd over the past three stages - so I guess we win Stage 5? Pfft

Very nice reports Tamijo, especially the ttt which are always hard to do. Conclusion after 4 stages: Should have send Kritskiy to the Giro instead Grin

Not good enough. Cannot blame Pluchkin too much though, he's sharp... Nepomnyachsniy should have been with him though, and it's annoying he seems so weak right now.

Wow, a minute on Velits and 1'30 on Lecuisinier and Guldhammer? Arndt is really going for another TdF ride here, it seems.
No idea how he constantly overperforms in a GT, now if he continues even somewhat close to that level, he might even survive the TT in a decent position.

Then again as Heine said (who got a monster ride out of Preidler again), going too well now probably prevents breakaways later on, but we first have to ride the race to see where everyone's heading.

Just wow at this stage. Awfully hard for some and many have lost much more than expected such as Lecuisinier, Velits, Monsalve, Guldhammer, Pluchkin.

Unfortunately Keizer as well even though sitting right in the mix of those. That said Abal in 3rd must have had a +5 day and this would be something Keizer should be able to have as well on a good day.
Same for Preidler...slowly getting annoying. Pfft

14th and 17th right now is still a bit less than I would like.
Olivier surprisingly strong today and in general. Though Keizer at 17th is just too far down and seems to have a mix of minus and neutral daily form so far...could really use one good day.

Then again both sit in a good position for a long range attack, which often moves you up a lot. So looking forward to this.

Koep going from top50 to 75th not ideal neither for his personal goal. Pfft

Congrats to SN for yet another Schleck show.

Olala, that was quite a stage, and so early in the Vuelta. No doubt Schleck is now in command looking at the GC after that performance. He's just crazy good, and kind of always good Pfft Congratulations again, SN!

Super happy about the team's performance as well here, with five riders top 30. Just a shame Schleck is that good, so he looks likely to deny us the teams classification, unless we're able to ride away in a successful breakaway or two.

Though, looking at our leaders, I'm not sure if I'm going to be worried or not. Galta with a very good ride, but on the other hand Guldhammer loosing a couple of minutes to Galta and outside the top 20 on the stage, is quite a lot worse than expected.

Suddenly the top 10 goal looks difficult as well, as one of them definitely needs to be consistent. If they continue like this, none of them are likely to get a top 10, but probably both will get a top 15/top 20, I guess. Having said all that, here's for hoping one of them will join the breakaway fun that should come when we hit the final week Pfft

Looking forward to the flat stages now, as Holst Enger's first sprint in this Vuelta was very good. Feels like every stage is even more exciting than usual in this race, as we've got a rider with decent chances for all terrains, except the TT in the final week.

Just when I said we could get a nice battle between Schleck and Pluchkin Smile

Haig in a good area around 20th. Of course that's only a good range, when you use it for breakaways later on! Not too impressed with Trent Lowe though, a Top-50 must be his aim for the GC.

Unlucky Gunman in the wrong breakaway attempt yet again. Hopefully he will try to repeat his attempts in a hilly stage.
