Oh, I thought this would be the Champs already, two more stages then?
Three stages left: a hilly stage towards Millau, 54 kilometers TT around Albi and then Champs-Élysées. I tried to fit everything in a race and use as many variants as possible and I couldn't do that in 21 stages.
Stage 22, an unusual sight in a Grand Tour, but we count to 24 here. Also one of the longest stages, 221 kilometers from Toulouse to Millau. Arrival on a second category climb with ten points available there, if Quintana wins today he'll be tied with Landa.
It is also the last chance for a breakaway victory, since it's unlikely to happen at the Champs-Élysées. Elmiger, Mohoric and Talansky form the definitive breakaway after some earlier attempts did not get approved.
Halfway through the stage and the gap is eight minutes. Talansky takes the first two category four climbs, but he's not in the race for that. He's also the best placed in the GC of the three ahead, but at over an hour.
Strangely, with a lot of points available at the intermediate sprint today, there's no challenge for it. A lot of points for France who were leading the peloton at the time. Kristoff still leads by one point.
After taking the category three mountain as well, Talansky has enough of Elmiger and Mohoric who have been lurking in his wheel all day long and goes solo. The gap to the peloton is 5 minutes with 45 kilometers to go.
Chaves was on the attack a lot the past few days, and has to pay the prize today. He's dropped way before the end, and his 23rd place in the GC is at stake.
Elmiger and Mohoric did not try to stay ahead and were caught with ease. Talansky takes the second category Col de Vernhette, moving up even further in the mountains classification. Also no showdown between Landa and Quintana for the remainig points there. Only thirteen points available in the race, while the gap between the first two is ten. Gap in this race for the leader is 3'30.
Another point taken by the American. With 20 kilometer to go he is still 2 and a half minutes ahead, the stage win might be possible.
Crash by Meintjes, who is second in the youth classification at two minutes from Jungels. Another jersey we can call decided now.
We reach the final climb to Le Cade and no time is wasted by Porte. It also shows that Talansky's lead wasn't enough and he is about to be caught. He wins the combativité award for his effort, and rightfully so.
It's done, the stage win will be decided by a sprint up the mountain. Valverde used Porte's slipstream to get ahead, Pinot is now also getting in the mix. Nibali looks upon it from the front of the peloton.
Scratch that, he goes himself. Is two minutes plus not enough going into the time trial. Froome was badly placed and missed the attack.
Going into the final kilometer and Valverde holds ten seconds to a unleashed Nibali. The others are not far behind, but there's no sign of either Landa or Quintana amongst the frontrunners. The polka dot jersey battle ends in an anticlimax.
Spain won two stages courtesy of Landa, and now Alejandro Valverde takes his second stage win of the race after stage four in Le Havre. In fact, all of Spain's victories came from an uphill finish.
Nibali crosses the line thriteen seconds later and picks up six bonus seconds. He will go into the final time trial with a comforting lead.
Third place for Porte at 29 seconds. D. Martin fourth, Froome fifth, Pinot sixth, Zakarin seventh, Aru eight all in the same time.
Quintana finishes a minute down in eleventh, Landa a group further in thirteenth. Neither of them took points, which means we can call one classification decided, the winner of the mountains classification is Mikel Landa (provided he finishes the final two stages).

Although not officially done yet, we could say Bob Jungels will win the youth classification after Meintjes's crash.

Combativity:
Out of the three who got away, he was present in both previous attempts, won every mountain sprint today and was by far the last to get caught: Andrew Talansky
Final words:
Spoiler
Unrealistic intermediate sprint bug again, might actually directly influence the result. But we might get an epic showdown at the Champs to decide the green jersey, the only classification still very close.
The jury will be deciding on the supercombativity award at the end of the Tour, but for this year they've added a public vote. Visit the link below to vote for your favourite. Here are the ten nominees!
The closing time trial takes place around Albi and is 54 kilometers long. There is a categorised hill in the middle but the specialists can eat their heart out today. Zabel is the first to start as he's last in the GC at 4 hours, 42 minutes and 39 seconds.
The fastest of the early starters is Boasson Hagen, providing an early benchmark at 1 hour, 23 minutes and 29 seconds.
Peter Sagan shows his multifunctionality. He beats the best time by nearly a minute and might even finish in the top fifteen of the day for some additional points for the points classification.
Prologue winner Küng can't make it a double, he's 46 seconds down, proving that the Slovakian has raced a great time trial.
Former champion of the world in this discipline, Tony Martin, would be expected to beat this time by quite a margin. However, at the first split he's one second slower. At the second split that gap increased to four seconds. In the end, seven seconds is the deficit for provisional second place.
Another former world champion, Vasil Kiryienka, does a lot better. He is already 18 seconds ahead at the first split and doubles that at the end. New best time: 1h21'52.
Castroviejo passed Foliforov on his run, but the extra slipstream doesn't bring him close to the best time. He's nearly a minute down.
Another outsider for the stage is Roglic, but we can cross out his name pretty quickly as well since he's 40 seconds down at the top of the climb.
Dennis also won't look back on this time trial with fondness, he's not even in the provisional top ten.
Finally a good time again, Kwiatkowski is only two seconds away at the first intermediate. He manages to turn it around to two seconds advantage at the finish line. New leader!
The man in the white jersey, Jungels, could lose ten minutes today and still win. He's provisional fifth, and will become the winner of the youth classification provided he doesn't crash in Paris.
A huge favourite for the stage win is Dumoulin. He's fifth in the GC and has the opportunity to pass Contador for fourth. His first two split times show he's well on his way to stage victory.
Chris Froome needs two minutes and a bit to win the race against all odds. He arrives at the first split with a time of 30 minutes and 42 seconds, just one second behind Dumoulin.
Right behind him the man in yellow, Vincenzo Nibali. He rides past this at 30 minutes and 52 seconds, losing 14 seconds to Froome. No worries as of yet.
Froome has caught sight of Quintana who has an absolute shocker! The second checkpoint tells us he's still only a second behind Dumoulin, however there are no bonus seconds in a TT.
Four seconds has Nibali lost between checkpoint one and two. Barring a mechanical failure, a crash or a sudden gust of wind, he'll have the race in his pocket.
As expected, Dumoulin takes the fastest time at the finish with a one hour, 21 minutes and 15 seconds, which is 34 seconds faster than Kwiatkowski.
Fighting for his fourth place, Contador rode a very strong time trial. He lost 18 seconds over 54 kilometers and that's enough to defend fourth, by 14 seconds. His time will even bring him third place of the day.
Quintana managed to barely stay ahead of a charging Froome. He can be satisfied with his performance since he's not the best against the clock, but he'll finish nineteenth today. His gap to those behind him was large enough to avoid a bit of loss, and his third place was never in question today.
One second at split one, one second at split two, two seconds at the finish. Froome will finish the race without a stage victory, and without the overall victory!
And so Nibali is the last to cross the line. He lost a bit more in the final kilometers, but 24 seconds down on Froome is enough to defend his yellow jersey, and it's good enough for fourth place today! The honours today go to Tom Dumoulin for winning the stage, and Vincenzo Nibali for securing the yellow jersey!

Final words:
Spoiler
This was quite an anticlimax. It was always going to be very difficult for Froome to win two minutes over Nibali but the latter was strong enough. Dumoulin v. Contador was the most interesting battle of the day. And Sagan with a nice surprise!
If you'd ask yourself, where did Nibali win the race, then there are two stages which stand out: stage five and stage twenty.
Let's take a look at stage five. Before this stage Nibali was only three seconds ahead of Froome thanks to a better prologue (which was already a blow to Froome, but not the end of the world). In this stage Froome was caught up in a crash and was even spotted on the ground himself, in pain. He lost nearly a minute on that stage, which could've been as much as three minutes but he was saved by liberal application of time gaps.
Can you spot Froome?
But is this crash the reason Froome lost the race? He did lose an additional 26 seconds on the first hilly stage, which could be attributed to the crash. But he seemed normal during the Alps and the Pyrenees, and even clawed back a bit of time during those. So we have to conclude no. Though it did attribute to Nibali's victory, it is not the exact reason why he won it.
Then there's stage twenty, with finish on the Tourmalet. Froome won back 25 seconds during the previous day in a rare moment of weakness from Nibali. The gap was 1'12 with a time trial still to come, so the race wasn't lost yet. It wasn't for a lack of trying, Froome attacked a lot during that stage, but maybe Nibali was smarter with his energy and managed to gain a lot of time on him in the end.
Where the race was definitely lost
So, maybe we should be looking at it from Nibali's side of things. He had a faster prologue, a better team time trial and was clearly better on hilly arrivals. Combined with the fact he limited his losses in the final time trial, two stage victories in yellow and a generally strong performance in the mountain stages, he probably would've won regardless of Froome's crash. He was the strongest rider of the race.
Then we have to consider Quintana, who was also marked as one of the big favourites. However, with his inferior time trialing ability he needed to make up time in the mountain stages, which he wasn't really able to do. He also couldn't benefit of his strong team. But the real blow to his GC aspirations came very early in the race. Stage two, the cobbled stage with a lot of crashes. We haven't seen Quintana in a crash and we have no reason to believe he was held up by one, but still he lost two minutes to both Nibali and Froome.
In conclusion, we should say Nibali won this race, rather than Froome and Quintana lost this race. He was the strongest of the race, and although he had some weaknesses and some time losses, the opposition wasn't really strong enough to get rid of him.
This is it, we've made it to the end! Paris. Only a few kilometers left and some laps over the Champs-Élysées and then it's time for champagne, parties and some decent sleep.
Traditionally there's no morning breakaway on the final stage but this year the riders have decided not to adhere this. This resulted in the following breakaway: Bookwalter, Dillier, Foliforov, Gilbert, Guerreiro, Haas, Kiryienka, König, Lopez, Paterski, Roche, Tratnik, Valgren and Woods. Gilbert takes the only remaining mountain point.
Fourteen men in the breakaway means fifteenth and one point is still available at the intermediate, and so we have an actual race for it. Sagan extends his margin in the points classification to seven. His rival Kristoff has to either win or finish second and he's guaranteed, and needs at least top ten if Sagan finishes outside the top fifteen, and a lot of scenarios in between.
A tradition we do follow this year is the ceremonial entrance of the Champs-Élysées. The first rider from the peloton to enter is John Journalist, an anonymous reported who managed to ride this entire race as well. Kudos!
Once he got out of the way the pace was increased again, and with 20 kilometer to go the fourteen lead by 90 seconds. The first sprint trains are being formed.
One straightaway later and the gap is under a minute, surely they won't make it. Germany and Norway lead the peloton.
But the breakaway doesn't give up without a fight. We can see Gilbert, Kiryienka, Roche and Woods accelerating.
Scratch that, Bookwalter, Guerreiro, König, Paterski and Roche are the first five. Then a small gap to Gilbert and Woods, and then the peloton with the other members of the breakaway caught.
Sagan is positioned a bit further back than Kristoff at the moment, mostly due to the fact he doesn't have any teammates left. His rival does have a sprint train, and it's unlikely they'll let Sagan ride in their wheel. Nibali also very much near the front, as if he's afraid to crash. The seven leaders are still away with eight kilometers to go.
The sprinters can thank Bystrøm and Martin for pulling back the breakaway. Can we finally go towards the sprint?
No we can't, Dylan van Baarle throws a spanner in the works. Dennis, Elmiger, Saramotins and Vanmarcke are on his wheel. Will we see another surprise?
I never thought I would say this phrase in my life but here we go: Aleksejs Saramotins is leading out of the final corner at the Champs-Élysées! On the right side of the road is a German train with Arndt-Degenkolb-Greipel, who have failed so many times over the past stages. On the left Norway with Enger-Boasson Hagen-Kristoff. In the middle Sagan appears to be led out by Mezgec in a Slovakia/Slovenia alliance.
Saramotins is caught, but applause for the effort. Vanmarcke is still there but the sprinters have far more pace. Mezgec lapsed onto the German train while Sagan chose to sit behind Kristoff, and they're not happy with that but they have to continue. Gaviria and Groenewegen also in a good position.
We have a malfunction in Norway's train! Boasson Hagen launched his sprint way too early and Kristoff was not ready, Sagan now finds himself ahead. Enger is trying to bring Kristoff back to pace. At this moment it looks like a battle between Greipel and Mezgec.
Boasson Hagen has a lot of stamina but he's beginning to fade away. Degenkolb launched Greipel and leaves Mezgec far, far behind. Sagan is coming strong from behind and Kristoff has found his momentum. Remember he has to beat Sagan to win the green jersey.
The battle for the stage victory will be one between Greipel and Sagan. It could save the race for Germany, who have been mocked throughout this race for their dysfunctional sprint preparations. Sagan doesn't need to win to bag the green jersey, as long as Kristoff doesn't overtake him during the final 200 meters.
André Greipel saves the race, and wins on the Champs-Élysées! Peter Sagan takes second place and the green jersey! Gaviria, KristoffGroenewegen, Degenkolb, Mezgec, Colbrelli, Enger and Boasson Hagen complete the top ten.
Vincenzo Nibali participated in the sprint for the heck of it, and even finished thirteenth. And it secures him the yellow jersey, the overall victory in the Tour des Nations!

Final words:
Spoiler
I originally didn't want to report the breakaway before the Champs-Élysées for realism sake, but then I realised the intermediate sprint was before that and there were points available for the Sagan/Kristoff battle. Which also kinda spoiled my plan of letting the control rider take the credit of entering Paris first but I thought what the hell, he deserved a bit of attention (but not as much as Peraud in my two rider story, which kinda got out of hand).
For the points and mountains classification I applied the official ordening from the Tour rather than PCM's standard "sorted by GC", I haven't done this for the previous stages. The combativity is based on your votes with all non-votees getting joint third.
Q: Congratulations, what is going through your mind right now? A: I'm really happy. I want to thank my teammates, the management, the fans, my family, everyone back in Italy. Amazing victory, just amazing. I have no words.
Chris Froome
Q: Second place, did you use doping to aid your performance? A: I still won't answer your questions.
Nairo Quintana
Q: On the podium, satisfied? A: I came here to win, so I'm a bit disappoined but there were two riders stronger than me. Congratulations to them, and I'd like to thank everyone who supported me througout the race.
Alberto Contador
Q: Rumours are you're ending your career here. Is that true? A: I'm quitting after the Vuelta, a race I consider more important than this. It's nice to finish fourth but I didn't really like the race.
Tom Dumoulin
Q: Fifth place and a stage win. Do you consider this race a success? A: Yes, definitely. Shame to lose out on fourth by just a few seconds but overall I can be happy.
Peter Sagan
Q: The points classification was closer than previous races. How happy are you? A: I'm very happy. Kristoff good rider. Sprints here tough. Tough field. Very happy. Congrats Nibs, buddy, good victory. Froomey, sorry man. Yeah, great race. Thank you.
André Greipel
Q: Finally a stage victory. Could you have achieved this had Kittel not withdrawn? A: The manager kept going back on Marcel (Kittel, red.) while I was much stronger. The reason we failed in the beginning was Marcel's arrogance. But here everything worked, many thanks to Nikias (Arndt, red.) and John (Degenkolb, red.) who really helped me today. And thanks to everyone who supported me, the fans, friends and family. I never gave up, this is so beatiful.
Alexander Kristoff
Q: What happened there in the train? A: Eddy (Boasson Hagen, red.) went way too early and that caught me off guard. Luckily Sondre {Enger, red.) had enough strength left to pull me back into speed, but yeah very weird. I'll have to talk to him about that. I could've won today, and I could've won green. Really disappointed.
Mikel Landa
Q: Two stage wins, polka dots and the combativity award, which one is the most important to you? A: They're all of great importance to me, but if I have to choose then the combativity. It was voted by the fans and that's the most important thing to me. Without them we're nothing. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, followed and supported me and I hope to be back next time.
Bob Jungels
Q: Best youngster of the race by ten minutes. Did you expect more competition? A: Don't forget Meintjes crashed, else it would've been two or three minutes. Yeah I felt really strong this race and this victory doesn't come as a surprise to me. The opposition wasn't strong enough, I was too good for them.
And that's a wrap! I wanted to be done before 2018 and I've done that with four hours to spare here. I would like to thank everyone who followed my story, and I'll see you around. Maybe I will write a new story in due time, but that depends on a lot of things.
Awesome job mate! The whole Tour was entertaining to watch and you really deserve a party out night tonight
I'm sure to be following if you do keep on with these great stories.. First one i followed and it surprised me. Good luck!
Yep, well done, mate, all round an excellent story, writing, screenshots, summaries, analysis, interviews. Also pretty realistic simulation, Froome was on the back foot after his crash, he knew he couldn't make up enough time in the late ITT so he had to try and attack but failed. My ICL riders Fuglsang (despite crash) and Poels 13th and 17th, pretty good.
