[Story] Tour des Nations
Ollfardh
I was about to say the opposite, this thread needs more German mocking. First they fail the sprints, now the TT. Schade Deutschland alles ist vorbei indeed!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Marcovdw
@Ripley - Yeah Quintana must be very happy with this result.
@Ollfardh - With the way they have been riding so far they deserve a bit of mockery, even though they can't help it because PCM

STAGE 8

No, you're not watching stage six again. But the peloton utilised the same tactic, no breakaway before the intermediate sprint. Ryan Mullen and Juraj Sagan don't want to comply yet and attack their breakaway mates, who are being reeled in.

photouploads.com/images/6dcab6.jpg

Unfortunately the breakaway riders lulled the sprinters and their trains into sleep as a few kilometers before the intermediate sprint, a small bunch of riders attack. The sprinter teams gave up and that's how today's breakaway was formed.

photouploads.com/images/cdb9f3.jpg

Again a big group of attackers, a trend this tour so far. Here are the thirteen names: Mullen, Sagan (Juraj of course), Arashiro, Hollenstein, Kolar, Korsaeth, Kump, Maikin, Mørkøv, Oliveira, Porsev, Vakoč and Wiśniowski. Some names we have seen in a breakaway before.

photouploads.com/images/5e2dad.jpg

To continue the flat stage clichés the traditional teams lead the peloton: Belgium, France and Germany. The gap was at most eight minutes, with Wiśniowski being the virtual yellow jersey for an hour or so.

photouploads.com/images/ae3cc7.jpg

With 22 kilometers to go, and as the rain starts to fall down, Hayman attacks and is joined by Terpstra. Normally I'd make fun of him and say he's wasting energy again, but he just needs about 20 seconds, win the stage and he's in yellow. So it's actually quite smart. I said Terpstra and smart in the same sentence. And I mean it. Seriously.

photouploads.com/images/99722f.jpg

Into the final stages and we have three leaders: Hayman, Oliveira and Terpstra. The gap is 30 seconds. It is actually possible!

photouploads.com/images/49e820.jpg

They still have the lead while the other teams have started building and executing their trains. These three are tough nuts to crack. The traditional German train hasn't imploded yet and is followed by Kristoff and Sagan (Peter of course).

photouploads.com/images/92e66e.jpg

And so a perfectly executed attempt at a coup d'êtat has failed. Kudos to Terpstra, something the combativity jury agrees to. But now full focus on the sprint. Everyone has joined onto the German bandwagon.

photouploads.com/images/951f48.jpg

Kristoff comes out of the wheel before Kittel can and therefore single handly destroys the German train. The French train has some delays of their own with Démare only launched onto the right tracks now.

photouploads.com/images/222149.jpg

In between the grandstands it's a battle between Kristoff and Sagan for the stage win and the green jersey. Whoever wins takes both. Bennett looks solid for an invisible third place while Kittel nearly puts Cavendish into the barrier.

photouploads.com/images/e8a9a5.jpg

And Peter Sagan takes the green jersey! Or the stage victory, whatever you think is more important. Bennett nearly jumped Kristoff on the line while Cavendish kept control of his bike to finish ahead of culprit Kittel. Some angry words will be spoken between those two after the stage.

Another classification which will likely change leadership tomorrow as I can't see Fernando Gaviria finishing in the first groups. But he may proof me wrong.

Niki Terpstra

Final words:

Spoiler
This is the only non-foolish attack by Terpstra so far, as it would make sense for him to try and gain 20 seconds. I think it's weird and funny at the same time, and definitely a weird aspect of PCM11.

Race:

photouploads.com/images/f0b675.jpg

Today is the first time we tackle some serious hills. Not mountanious terrain yet, but with a second and third category mountain sprint the general and the mountain classification will likely get a shake up.

photouploads.com/images/5416a6.jpg

Today's breakaway is formed by these eleven riders: Bookwalter, Brammeier, Chernetskiy, Cort Nielsen, Elmiger, Gonçalves, Konrad, Niemiec, Polanc, Poljański and Woods.

photouploads.com/images/a07ced.jpg

Three people care about the single point on the Côte d'Evaux-les-Bains: Chernetskiy takes the point away from Gonçalves and Niemiec. The others are either not interested at all or smart enough to wait for the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert, a category two. Belgium and Colombia lead the peloton, six minutes back.

photouploads.com/images/e3db51.jpg

A rookie mistake from Spilak, steering himself into the barriers.

photouploads.com/images/7fabb7.jpg

Woods joins the group of one pointers, in a sprint that was contested by nearly all riders. The next two categorised climbs will be very interested. The lead briefly touched eight minutes, but is back to six.

photouploads.com/images/76f126.jpg

And for the first time this tour we have someone with more than one point in the mountain classification: Woods takes five points on the category two and moves into the polka dots, as no one will be able to overtake him during this stage anymore. Brammeier, Cort Nielsen and Elmiger have been dropped on the climb. The peloton has reduced the gap to 2'30, no attacks yet.

photouploads.com/images/10da29.jpg

As the peloton reaches the top we find the yellow jersey in the last wheel. Vanmarcke was able to follow the pace set by Aru, Chaves and Landa, but is strugling at the moment. The riders ranked second to fourth have all been dropped already, as has Bardet. Very disappointing for the Frenchman who can now kiss any GC aspirations goodbye.

photouploads.com/images/36cc9e.jpg

Onto the final climb to Super Besse and the eight at the front still hold a two-minute lead over the peloton. Elmiger resides somewhere between the first group and the peloton, where Vanmarcke had to let go. The virtual yellow jersey now belongs Martin, number five in the GC.

photouploads.com/images/3ea00b.jpg

We are used to seeing a Sky train, and that has also found his way into the British team. Nibali decides to launch an attack and is followed by Kangert, Meintjes and Valverde. Probably too late for the stage win, but for the Italian it could be an opportunity to take yellow.

photouploads.com/images/39da49.jpg

The one who will take the polka dot happens to be the strongest climber in the break. Without attacking per se, Woods has managed to dropped everyone else and is riding towards the finish line solo. The group Nibali is closing in and the British train has upped their tempo in response.

photouploads.com/images/059c77.jpg

Two more mountain points to be sure of the polka dot jersey, but more importantly a stage victory for Michael Woods here in the ski station of Super Besse-Sancy.

photouploads.com/images/b7f07c.jpg

Konrad takes the final mountain point and second place in the stage, followed by Polanc, Chernetskiy, Bookwalter, Gonçalves and Niemiec.

photouploads.com/images/511e3a.jpg

57 seconds behind the winner, Nairo Quintana takes eight with a late attack and beats Nibali an Valverde, which moves Poljański outside the top ten. The peloton arrives 26 seconds later, but Martin was dropped out of that group.

photouploads.com/images/5f457f.jpg

Crossing the line together are Vanmarcke and Stybar. The two riders wore either the yellow jersey and the polka dot jersey for the last 7 stages. They had a nice run, but it's time to pass on the jersey to the others. The polka dot jersey goes to Woods and the yellow jersey to Nibali!

On the podium for the stage win. On the podium for the polka dot jersey. And on the podium for the combativity award:
Michael Woods

Final words:

The big guns were pretty quiet this stage, a big group still in the same time. Things should change in the next few stages though.

Nibali delivers a major blow imo.. last days will favour him cause of REC (and final hill stage) and he's already got a sizeable gap on Froome. Quintana will be likely the strongest in the pyrinees but he's got the TT and a major delay to Nibali (Valverde similar situation)

Off course Valverde is my favourite but also interested to see how far Fuglsang can go. This is a good platform for him.

Nice, a stage for Woods! Ever since discovering his blog on cyclingnews.com I'm a fan of the Canadian, well worth a read. For the GC I'll be watching Fulgsang, star rider of my ICL team.

@Yellow Jersey - Nibali is favourite at the moment imo but there are still 15 stages left and we haven't even had a mountain stage yet. Froome and Quintana will surely attack him.
@AbhishekLFC - Fuglsang is the dark horse, will be interesting to see if he can remain near the top placements.
@Ripley - I must admit it was weird to see Woods win in a WC jersey, but it was a very deserved victory for a mixed team Wink

Yes of course, but psychologicaly, winning time on a stage like this (knowing there's a similar in the 22nd day) is quite a blow, cause at this point it appears that Nibali is in better shape and might hold on with Froome in the big mountains.

Interviews:

Vincenzo Nibali

Q: You're in the yellow jersey. Do you think you're the main favourite now?
A: Well, we haven't even had the first mountain stage yet. It's nice to be in the lead but I'm not there yet. I have a bit of a gap and I'm confident I'll be able to maintain it but the competition will not sit back.

Q: You have riders like Aru and Pozzovivo in your squad. Do they need to help you or will they get a free role?
A: I would be very angry if they were to attack me for the yellow jersey. I think our primary goal is to win the race, which means they have to help me. I know Fabio (Aru, red.) is a very strong rider and if he thinks he can win a stage he has my blessing but it shouldn't bring my yellow jersey into troubles.

Chris Froome

Q: You're a bit behind in the GC. What's your plan to make up the deficit?
A: Ride as hard as I can, of course. Vincenzo (Nibali, red.) is a tough opponent but when I'm on my best and have the full support of a strong team I will beat him.

Q: You crashed on the fifth stage. Have you recovered?
A: I don't feel any pain while riding. You can see some scratches here and there but they won't influence my performance. I feel stronger than ever.

Jakob Fuglsang

Q: Second place in the GC, well done. Did you expect to be in this position?
A: At this point in the race, to be honest, no. I didn't expect this many GC contenders to lose time on the cobbles or due to crashes.

Q: Can you see yourself on the podium at the end of the race?
A: I have no reason to see why not. The legs feel great and I have an advantage over riders like Nairo (Quintana, red.), who have lost three minutes already.

Nairo Quintana

Q: Three minutes down on Nibali, two on Froome. Do you think you're out of contention for the win?
A: There are still fifteen stages left, anything can happen. They can have a bad day or some bad luck and then I need to be ready to capitalise on those.

Q: Úran is ahead of you in the GC. Is the team 100% focussed on you or does he have his own agenda?
A: Rigoberto (Úran, red) has done well to stay out of trouble but as far as I know I'm still the team leader.

Thibaut Pinot

Q: The French haven't really done great so far. Is the pressure growing?
A: When you're riding a home race the fans expect big things from you. But Arnaud (Démare) has done some good stuff in the sprints and me and Romain (Bardet, red.) haven't really had a mountain stage.

Q: Quatorze juillet, Alpe d'Huez? Can we expect something from you?
A: Of course. Such a legendary climb on the national holiday will give me a huge boost which will hopefully result in the stage win.

STAGE 10

Profile:
photouploads.com/images/79fc9a.jpg

Race:

photouploads.com/images/602865.jpg

Some riders like a restday, others dread it. Today we go through the Ardeche to Le Puy-en-Velay. Three category one climbs, including one right from the start. Yet the stage is only rated as hilly.

photouploads.com/images/eace74.jpg

Only 15 kilometers into the stage and Kittel already has to let go of the peloton. It will be a battle against the time limit for him today.

photouploads.com/images/d3a300.jpg

Seven men chose for the very early attack today, either as playground for the polka dots or a possible stage win. The names are, in alphabetical order: Bakelants, Craddock, Foliforov, Haas, Küng, Mohoric and Valgren. Two riders attack halfway up the first climb of the day in order to join them: Costa and Trofimov.

photouploads.com/images/c8739d.jpg

Bakelants takes the ten points available on the Col de l'Escrinet and becomes the virtual leader in the mountains classification. The nine leaders now have two minutes on the chasing peloton.

photouploads.com/images/e01290.jpg

On the next category three climbs Trofimov takes two points, adding up to his eight on the previous climb he's now tied with Bakelants. Are these two the main contenders, and will the other seven focus on the stage win? Italy takes control of the peloton at 3'30.

photouploads.com/images/7af621.jpg

The first atop the Mont Mezenc is Costa. Trofimov takes one point, Bakelants none. Costa already claimed 3 points from previous climbs, meaning the Portugese is the new virtual leader. Mohoric has been dropped from the break, gap six minutes.

photouploads.com/images/0e7f7b.jpg

France and Spain join Italy to make it a trio of Southern European countries chasing the break, and it seems to be working. The gap is down to four minutes, with Mohoric exactly in between the two groups at two minutes. Kangert and Mollema attack from the peloton.

photouploads.com/images/3b99ee.jpg

A further five points for Costa to extend his lead even furhter. Only ten points available means that only Bakelants, Craddock, Kung, Trofimov or Woods with a surprise attack can take the jersey away from him.

photouploads.com/images/2123fc.jpg

Chaves is dropped by the peloton, in a same group which contains Greipel. The Colombian is most likely injured from one of the crashes in earlier stages, else I have no explanation for this. Kangert and Mollema joined up with Mohoric.

photouploads.com/images/770fc9.jpg

We hit the final climb of the day, the Col du Cayres. Mohoric is caught as Poels attack. E1 has a lead of two and a half minutes, E2 is at one minute from the peloton.

photouploads.com/images/5d10e6.jpg

Valverde opens the attacks of the favourites. Gilbert follows, Nibali in his yellow jersey goes on his wheel which immediately triggers Froome. Fuglsang around the outside, Martin right behind, Quintana, Contador, Pinot, nearly everyone with intentions has attacked!

photouploads.com/images/fdf298.jpg

The yellow jersey catches the second part of the breakaway, which has been split into two parts. Bakelants, Costa, Craddock and Trofimov remain in the lead. Group Kangert/Mollema is back in the peloton as is Fuglsang. Porte has attacked, as he had missed the first round.

photouploads.com/images/a58481.jpg

Costa secures his polka dot jersey as he crosses the line first and takes another ten poins. The other attackers have caught up to Nibali again, creating a big group of favourites.

photouploads.com/images/5bc68f.jpg

The group of favourites is caught by their domestiques in the downhill. Bakelants and Craddock are 30 seconds up the road, Costa and Trofimov in the lead with 1 minute and 30 seconds.

photouploads.com/images/d294b3.jpg

These two will battle for the stage win. Coincidentally they also attacked together when the first breakaway attempt was just getting away. Costa already has the polka dot jersey, but given by the way they rode today I don't think they made a deal to let Trofimov win the stage. It will be an all-out sprint-à-deux.

photouploads.com/images/addb17.jpg

Rui Costa wins stage ten in Le Puy-en-Velay! And takes the polka dots of the hands of Woods. Trofimov was outsmarted and has to settle for second.

photouploads.com/images/57e28f.jpg

Craddock completes the podium just ahead of Bakelants and the peloton, which has just managed to join them in the last meters. Nibali sprints to fifth but no bonus seconds on offer for that placement. Matthews and Martin, third and fourth in the GC, are not in this group.

photouploads.com/images/1c50e0.jpg

The last group to cross the line within the time limit contains Groenewegen and Kittel. Three riders were behind this group but unfortunately they are taken out of the race: Phil Bauhaus, Michael Kolar and Taylor Phinney.

Combativity:

As consolation for not winning the stage or the polka dot despite being very active today:
Yury Trofimov

Final words:

Spoiler
With three category one climbs I don't know why this wasn't a mountain stage. I had planned on it being a hilly stage with a flat finish, which it was rated, but I did not expect first category climbs on the route.

Manager of Minions

Yellow Jersey
Rui Costa Grin Otherwise, not an important day for GC (although Nibali did create a gap on the climb again, can't stress it enough  )

STAGE 11

Profile:
photouploads.com/images/0a08e3.jpg

Race:

photouploads.com/images/648240.jpg

The first proper mountain stage of the race takes us to Grenoble, after a downhill from the first Hórs Category climb: Chamrousse. Also two second category climbs, which means the polka dot might change shoulders again after today.

photouploads.com/images/eceee9.jpg

The first breakaway attempt, containing thirteen riders with no real standout names, was caught back fairly early in the stage.

photouploads.com/images/f7e9a2.jpg

The second attempt, containing only nine riders, did get a waiver from the peloton. Craddock, second in the mountains classification, is the only one who wsan't part in the original attempt. The others are: Bak, Benoot, Deignan, Kiryienka, Machado, Mamykin, Niemiec and Schär, the most dangerous for the general classification at seventeen minutes.

photouploads.com/images/cb2ae1.jpg

While leading the peloton for his and the race's leader Nibali, Formolo hits a bad patch of road and goes down. Luckily he didn't take his teammates or the yellow jersey with him. The gap to the front group is eight minutes.

photouploads.com/images/06c8d7.jpg

We start our Alpine adventure with the ascent of the Col du Cucheron. The gap has further increased to 11 minutes, and Barguil attacks. His gap to Nibali is also 11 minutes, but the Italians seem to allow it for now.

photouploads.com/images/c9fdf6.jpg

The priorities within the break are pretty clear, as Craddock can take the points without any substantial challenge. Barguil is now about halfway between the break and the Italy-led peloton.

photouploads.com/images/29ed66.jpg

Next up is the Col de Port, and Poels has taken over Barguil's homework but made a slight adjustment to avoid plagiarism. He will also try to bridge towards the break, something his source of inspiration hasn't managed to do yet. He's getting closer though, only four minutes behind.

photouploads.com/images/5a5b63.jpg

Surprisingly, Benoot takes the top points away from Craddock, who only comes in third. 2 minutes and 30 seconds to Barguil, 10 minutes to Poels, 12 minutes to the peloton.

photouploads.com/images/878db4.jpg

Barguil has made the catch at the foot of the climb towards Chamrousse, and now also moves into the virtual yellow jersey with 50 kilometers to go. Time for Italy to pick up the pace? Poels is also closing in but needs a monster climb to make up the entire difference.

photouploads.com/images/a39cbf.jpg

Chaves tries to break the ice in the peloton. After being dropped yesterday, he's now the first to attack on the final climb. The gap to the break is still over 11 minutes.

photouploads.com/images/2c0aea.jpg

Deignan takes 20 points for the mountains classification. Craddock comes over second and that's enough for him to appear at the podium ceremony at the end of the stage as the new owner of the polka dot jersey. Maybe he can also appear as stage winner, since the peloton is unlikely to close down the entire gap. Bak and Schär have been dropped and are now with Poels about two minutes down the road. Chaves is at six already and the peloton keeps quiet at eleven, for now.

photouploads.com/images/d52318.jpg

No move from any of the major players on Chamrousse, they all cross the top in a very big group. Very disappointing for the fans, I bet some of them will go to an online forum to out their anger at the passive strategy today. I'm sure they'll be rooting for Barguil to take the jersey, and it might be a very close call whether he'll make it or not.

photouploads.com/images/583c64.jpg

Barguil is either the best descender or takes the most risks, since he's managed to create a little gap in the downhill. With ten bonus seconds available at the line, he'll be desperate to get those as well.

photouploads.com/images/ce63e1.jpg

But the group behind him thought otherwise, as they worked hard to get him back, espescially time trial specialists Kiryienka took a big turn. This group of eight will likely go to a sprint. Poels two minutes behind, Chaves five, peleton at 11. It's still possible for Barguil.

photouploads.com/images/9cd32a.jpg

A moment of hesitation at the front and suddenly Kiryienka finds himself with a gap. Very dangerous, since he's known to be able to ride hard, but he has spend a lot of energy chasing down Barguil. We'll see what he has left.

photouploads.com/images/d0c413.jpg

And with just two kilometers to go he himself is chased back by the others, mainly Mamykin. Another moment of unawareness and Barguil puts himself on the other side of the road and rides away. Is this the decisive move?

photouploads.com/images/be704c.jpg

Yes it was, Warren Barguil wins the eleventh stage in the streets of Grenoble after a midstage attack! Behind him Benoot sprints to second ahead of Deignan and Machado. And now it's waiting for the peloton to arrive, to see if the Frenchman can also take the yellow jersey.

photouploads.com/images/c0dfa9.jpg

But wait, something we didn't pay much attention today, Poels is ahead of Barguil in the GC. He crosses the line in ninth place, 2 minutes and 16 seconds behind. He was 2 minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Barguil before today's stage, which means that, with Barguil's bonus seconds, they are exactly tied at the top of the general classification. If Nibali is too late we might need a bit more calculators to determine the new leader!

photouploads.com/images/ffe524.jpg

The Italian sprints to thirteenth place, but more importantly he sprints to keep his yellow jersey. The chrono stops at 10 minutes and 38 seconds after the winner crossed the line. This means, all things accounted for, he is still a minute ahead of Barguil and Poels, who both now move into the top four and are possibly back in contention.

Combativity:

Nearly taking yellow after a well timed mid stage attack to take today's victory:
Warren Barguil

Final words:

Spoiler
No attacks from the favourties. Very sad.
The thing with Craddock is nearly identical to the intermediate sprints. He did attack for the second and third mountain sprint but he was too late.

Thanks, maybe PCM11 is more realistic than we think

STAGE 12

Race:

photouploads.com/images/18da04.jpg

A short multimountain stage with two climbs of the highest category and finish on a first category climb at the ski station of La Toussuire. We expect more action than yesterday, where the big names decided not to waste energy.

photouploads.com/images/1acc84.jpg

The first three attackers are Kristoff, T. Martin, Van Avermaet. This could become a really strong breakaway.

photouploads.com/images/ae437e.jpg

Joining them are: Dombrowski, Gerrans, Kiserlovski, Kudus, Stybar and Valgren. They are 90 seconds ahead on the first parts of the first climb, the Col de la Madeleine.

photouploads.com/images/612bfc.jpg

Italy controls the pace and keeps the break within striking distance. This allows former polka dot wearer Costa to take this opportunity to cross over to the breakaway.

photouploads.com/images/dc4fc8.jpg

And it's an easy 20 points for Costa in his quest to retake the lead in the mountains classification. Gerrans, Kristoff and Stybar couldn't follow the pace on the climb. The peloton also took things easy and are 5 minutes behind.

photouploads.com/images/ac790f.jpg

Inspired by Barguil's stage winning and nearly yellow jersey taking attempt yesterday, Spilak thinks he can do the same today. He is not alone though, as Landa moves with him. The gap to the leading seven is six and a half minutes, with the other three somewhere in between.

photouploads.com/images/3875ca.jpg

The Sky, sorry Great Britain train leads the peloton on the slopes of the Croix de Fer. They have already taken out one minute of the gap. Mollema wants in on Landa and Spilak's mischief and decides to attack as well.

photouploads.com/images/3ee62a.jpg

The two adventures join E1 just before the top, and can't do anything against Costa taking another top score. Van Avermaet had to let go of the first group. Mollema at 1'30, and the group Stybar back in the peloton at 4'30.

photouploads.com/images/1b7431.jpg

On the downhill, the Belgian and the Dutch (re)join the lead group.

photouploads.com/images/d60dba.jpg

And just to be sure, Costa takes more points on the category two Col du Molard. Valgren and Van Avermaet were dropped (again), the peloton also closing in to just over 3 minutes.

photouploads.com/images/78751e.jpg

What a crash by Porte! He's lucky to get back on his feet after this, and that he brought no one down with him. He'll surely lose a lot of time today. The breakaway is two minutes ahead on the downhill, unlikely one of them will win the stage today.

photouploads.com/images/d743cf.jpg

For Kiserlovski, Kudus and T. Martin, the pace was too high and they had to drop back into the peloton. Chaves and Kangert want a little head start on the final climb.

photouploads.com/images/62291c.jpg

Costa goes solo, and Dombrowski is left behind. He has to ride a monster of a climb to stay ahead as the rest is closing in rapid pace.

photouploads.com/images/cb924c.jpg

At the moment some remains of the original break and some other attackers are caught, Fuglsang, who sits at second place in the GC, attacks. No immediate response from Nibali who might risk losing his jersey.

photouploads.com/images/1012f8.jpg

With 10 kilometers to go the yellow jersey finally attacks. D. Martin, Zakarin, Dumoulin respond immediately, while Froome and Quintana don't wait as well. Only Costa, Landa, Spilak and Fuglsang are ahead of them.

photouploads.com/images/45c256.jpg

The Dane tried, but he couldn't get away as he's caught together with Landa and Spilak. Nibali looks like he gave a bit too much, and Froome and Quintana try to use his weak moment by attacking the yellow jersey.

photouploads.com/images/06b3d3.jpg

With 7000 meters to go they can finally see Costa up the road. Landa, D. Martin and eventually Pinot in front of his home crowd try to gain some ground.

photouploads.com/images/f0c1d8.jpg

With 5 kilometers on the GPS everything is back together, with still a big group of around 40 riders together on the final climb. Surely we'll see some action in the dying minutes of the stage.

photouploads.com/images/0d3b73.jpg

Fuglsang attacks again! Amongst those who follow him is Nibali finally, and Froome. Also Costa manages to keep up with the frontrunners and might even get some points for the mountain classification.

photouploads.com/images/64ae8d.jpg

The Dane tries but doesn't have the legs to destroy the opposition today. Nibali attacks Froome, after looking very weak just a few minutes ago!

photouploads.com/images/de275a.jpg

But he doesn't just get to ride away from him, the distance remains minimal. Two riders try to join the two leaders: Quintana and Aru, who sees his boss in a good position

photouploads.com/images/14c258.jpg

Inside the last kilometer and the Italian finally has a gap.

photouploads.com/images/d727fa.jpg

Which is enough to give Vincenzo Nibali a victory at La Tousuirre in the yellow jersey. Froome loses nine seconds while Quintana crosses the line in third at 23 seconds. Zakarin rode a strong final kilometer to finish fourth to lead home a big group of 20, including the likes of Aru, Barguil, Dumoulin, Fuglsang and Pinot.

After the time limit passed, a few riders we still out on the mountain, including some big sprinters. The following riders have been eliminated from the Nations Cup: Breschel, Cavendish, Démare, Halvorsen, Hayman, Kankovsky, Kittel, Kuznetsov, Porsev, Juraj Sagan and Wiśniowski.

Combativity:

Maybe he deserved it two days ago, but today he was a man with a successful mission:
Rui Costa

Final words:

Spoiler
This stage required some database editing afterwards:
1, the Col du Molard was rated as Hors Category instead of the second category it was rated in the actual 2012 stage. I had to manually remove the excess points.
2, my control rider, John Journalist, was also in the last group which was OTL. I thought his stats (all 70's) would be enough to have him survive these stages without much care but apparently he got trapped at the back. I obviously had to reinstate him, and I considered being a French jury and reinstate the others as well, but they were already an hour behind Nibali iirc, which is too much for my liking.

Manager of Minions

Yellow Jersey
And the Shark bites just as i predicted
Really nice stage by Rui Costa again, Froome showing good legs but not good enough so far. Quintana the 3rd rider, I was also expecting a bit more from him.
Rooting for Jungels now also Pfft

STAGE 13

Profile:

Race:

photouploads.com/images/f70eb5.jpg

After 12 stages, Conor Dunne is last in the general classification, nearly 2 and three quarter hours behind. He's the first to tackle Alpe d'Huez today, but I would safely say he won't win this stage.

photouploads.com/images/29d815.jpg

The first reasonable time comes from Frank, who is way down in the GC due to crashes. He overtakes Gołaś on his way up, and beats Boasson Hagen's best time by 1 minute and 22 seconds. The benchmark is set at 42 minutes and 50 seconds.

photouploads.com/images/77b4a8.jpg

Buchmann is six seconds faster at the intermediate, eleven seconds faster at the finish.

photouploads.com/images/e08240.jpg

His teammate Martin would be a dangerous outsider for any timetrial, but it's too mountanious for him to have an impact today.

photouploads.com/images/9a3241.jpg

Miguel Angel Lopez takes some slipstream of Rojas to take the new best time.

photouploads.com/images/ef6e42.jpg

But not for long, as Chaves charges up the mountain. He beats his teammates time by 43 seconds and is the first to go under 42 minutes. 41'40 is the time to beat now.

photouploads.com/images/2ba1b9.jpg

Pozzovivo, Mollema and now Thomas came between the Colombians, but they're nowhere near Chaves. Can he rise up the general classification?

photouploads.com/images/1402ed.jpg

But then there's someone who goes even faster. It's Mikel Landa who takes another ten seconds off the best time. The crowd goes mental...

photouploads.com/images/0e3353.jpg

for Romain Bardet, who comes right behind him, and beats his time by six seconds. Will we see a French winner on the fourteenth of July?

photouploads.com/images/569b78.jpg

Fabio Aru goes third, seven seconds behind the best time. There are only strong climbers coming now, can we see some surprises and disappointments?

photouploads.com/images/9f32e5.jpg

We just received word that Richie Porte has beaten Bardet's time at the intermediate by 30 seconds! As we follow him in the final turns, he gains another 18 seconds to post the new best time. 40 minutes and 43 seconds! Can this be beaten?

photouploads.com/images/0cdaea.jpg

Thibaut Pinot and Ilnur Zakarin can't, as they're 42 and 25 seconds slower respectively, but they join the Australian on the virtual podium.

photouploads.com/images/5c571f.jpg

Definitely not the start Quintana wanted this tour, only 11th in the GC by now. For what it's worth he sets the second time of the day, 14 seconds slower after 14 kilometers of climbing.

photouploads.com/images/2d19eb.jpg

Alejandro Valverde disappoints today, not even finishing in the top twenty. As a result he will drop out of the top 10 of the GC.

photouploads.com/images/661eb4.jpg

A master in flat time trials and not bad up mountains either, Tom Dumoulin was a marked name today. But he's 1 minute and 13 seconds slower than Porte, which is not enough for a top 10 on the stage.

photouploads.com/images/a89240.jpg

Chris Froome is booed by the French public, who don't seem to like him. He does manage to overtake Poels on the climb. Whether these things actually affected his performance is questionable. In the end he's 37 seconds slower, virtual fourth place. Only two people are still on the road.

photouploads.com/images/e84fde.jpg

The slightly surprising number two at the moment is Jakob Fuglsang. His performance today is not amongst the best, as he lost nearly a minute to Froome who moves ahead of him in the general classification.

photouploads.com/images/b5f99f.jpg

And the last rider to start and finish is Vincenzo Nibali after the intermediate it was clear he wouldn't get to Porte's time. The final result show he lost 50 seconds to the Australian, and 13 seconds to his nearest rival Froome. It's enough to keep him in the yellow jersey, but the real man of today is Richie Porte, who wins the time trial to the Alpe d'Huez!
