Oh please. As someone who has mild asthma myself that is possibly one of the most ill-informed posts I've seen. Have you not heard of the dozens of top-level Olympic swimmers who took up the sport as a way to combat their childhood asthma?

If you want to make a comment about Froome or Nibali's guilt, that's fine. But don't muddy the waters by spreading misinformation like that.

I'm guessing he decided to do this before Froome's participation at the Giro came into doubt. I guess the uncertainty around Froome's early season calendar is going to throw most of the other GC favourites into a bit of a meltdown.

We might not see a lot of riders announce their calendar's until there is a decision on Froome.

Add in Movistars plan to throw Landa, Nairo and Piti at France as well. Le Tour could be shaping up as a cracking affair.
Expect Orica to send Chaves and a Yates as well.
Now for Froome to get a 6-9month ban and rock up in July as well as frash as a daisy...

Landa, Valverde, Nairo in addition to probably some of their other climbers such as Soler, Fernandez, Herrera etc. could really make it interesting as they might be challenging and even isolating Froome at some point.

That said, it was expected at some time as well in past and then Moscon, EBH, Thomas or even Knees, Eisel, Cavendish became goats in the mountains. Grin

Chaves will ride both Giro and Vuelta this season. Same calendar for Simon. Adam will go to the Tour.

And also remember that is no longer Orica, is Mitchelton-Scott Pfft

Well actually, Adam Yates leads Orica there. Chaves doing Giro-Vuelta double apparently, which I very much approve of Grin Simon too confirmed Giro-Vuelta. I like the plan, which I guess might end up with all three at the Vuelta. Presumably, Nieve is supporting Adam at the Tour.

Indeed. There are different kinds of asthma and different levels of severity. You can be diagnosed with asthma and have a completely normal life only needing to use your inhaler for your occasional cough, while you could be using 2-3 different inhalers + anti-IgE pills + steroids and be constantly affected by shortness of breath.

What seems clear to me is that salbutamol does not offer the best solution for an asthmatic athlete. It peaks quite early and fades rather quickly as well. You have options like formoterol or indacaterol which take around 5 min to start their effect and last for +/- 12h. That would make much more sense if you're going to spend most of your day on your bike, unless it is important for you to have the medicine washed up from your system in a short amount of time.

Not apperenty. Thankfully Chaves is at Giro. Fuck the tour.

Following last week’s events, LottoNL-Jumbo have fired Juan Jose Lobato from the team and suspended Antwan Tolhoek and Pascal Eenkhoorn for two months. They were taking sleeping pills, unprescribed by the team

Leave Sky then you FRICKIN MORON Pfft He seems to have the choice every year as an amazingly talented all-arounder but yet he stays. He could be a legitimate GC rider or a really top classics rider if he went to another team, but it seems we'll never know because he stays every year.

Thought I'd beat TMM on the line to post a bit of ladies news as the pro ladies have built The Cyclists' Alliance to help improve conditions all over for womens cycling.

Looks like it has a solid foundation and is already talking to the right people so it will be interesting to follow!

I agree. Possibly not a GT winner but certainly capable of winning the prestigious week long races.

Also at one point was a potential PR winner and probably could have become dominant in the cobbled classics, however he seems to have completely given up any ambition to win the classics in order to ride tempo around France every year.

Maybe he'll get a chance at Sky with Froome's probable absence.

Was writing a long piece for the Womens Cycling thread covering a ton of stuff that's happened recently Wink

I'm reserving judgment until they actually do something good. It has promise, and good intentions, but the aims are no different to what's been talked about for the last few years.
Although why they couldn't get the CPA or AIGCP to work for them properly i don't understand.

Saftey in races, Career advice and dispute, Rider representation - Fine short term goals, but all things that should be doable by the UCI, CPA or AIGCP.
Promote cycling to a wider Audience, Enhance economic opporunities for all riders, Provide support and resources during and post-career - Fine long term goals, although not entirely what a riders union should focus on.

Basically it's got weight behind it in senior riders, ex-riders. But why they couldn't make the existing unions of the CPA and AIGCP work with the UCI and themselves is a bigger question. Somewhere there's a big failure in the system, and i don't think a new "alliance" will solve that.

Honestly pretty fed up with all that asthma bullshit by now. Every time something like this happens, riders come up with the asthma excuse. Maybe if you have asthma you just shouldn't be an elite cyclist in the first place if all you do is abuse the shit out of the system Rolling Eyes

The normal advised dose for Ventolin is a maximum of eight puffs a day. That can sometimes be exceeded in severe cases. But it is up to the asthmatic, no matter how bad their asthma is, to stay within the limits.

I have no doubt that Chris Froome has asthma, that is pretty much a given. I don’t think anyone would disagree with that. But for someone who has asthma, having a very bad attack means it is difficult to walk up a set of stairs. You are not going to be so strong on a mountain stage.

word, this is currently pretty f'ed up.

I get the whole asthma frustration thing but the main thrust of that article is taking someone who is informed and has been sympathetic to the condition previously then laying out his numerous concerns over this test result and the massive dose it seems to represent.

Starting point of knowledge and some sympathy to end point of going very public with a damning judgement. Lots of insight along the way too.

This is a very generous limit in the first place that has been doubled in this test result!
