The start of March brings a festival of sprinting to Africa. While PT and PCT teams will be mixing in the cross-continent Tour d'Afrique, with more straight forward flat stages, the C1 La Tropicale Amissa Bongo race will take place in Gabon. A small field of just 15 teams has entered, including some CT teams alongside the PCT squads, and all six stages offer some form of climbing challenge, for any sprinters hoping to compete for overall victory in this race.
These are the best sprint stat riders in the race:
| | Fl | Hl | St | Rs | Sp | Ac | Mohs | Erik | 75 | 65 | 73 | 64 | 83 | 82 | Guerao | Óscar | 74 | 64 | 71 | 64 | 83 | 76 | Vantomme | Maxime | 73 | 64 | 76 | 65 | 82 | 78 | Goss | Matthew | 74 | 67 | 73 | 71 | 82 | 78 | Nelson | Ricki | 72 | 60 | 70 | 64 | 81 | 81 | Haller | Marco | 72 | 65 | 72 | 71 | 80 | 79 | Lavoine | Anthony | 73 | 60 | 71 | 64 | 80 | 78 | Kump | Marko | 74 | 76 | 76 | 73 | 80 | 80 | Van Asbroeck | Tom | 75 | 71 | 75 | 72 | 80 | 78 | Drapac | Damion | 71 | 53 | 70 | 65 | 80 | 79 | Nizzolo | Giacomo | 73 | 64 | 70 | 67 | 80 | 79 | Serebriakov | Aleksandr | 74 | 61 | 73 | 67 | 80 | 77 | Docker | Mitch | 72 | 68 | 69 | 71 | 79 | 77 | Stepniak | Grzegorz | 72 | 67 | 70 | 70 | 79 | 79 | Colbrelli | Sonny | 74 | 61 | 74 | 72 | 79 | 75 | Soupe | Geoffrey | 72 | 66 | 72 | 69 | 79 | 77 | Peeters | Kevin | 72 | 62 | 71 | 68 | 79 | 77 | Manarelli | Carlos Alexandre | 72 | 59 | 71 | 65 | 79 | 79 | Van der Sande | Tosh | 75 | 70 | 78 | 73 | 79 | 79 | Avila | Edwin | 70 | 66 | 73 | 69 | 78 | 77 | Sonnery | Blaise | 69 | 70 | 66 | 71 | 78 | 73 | Modolo | Sascha | 74 | 73 | 75 | 72 | 78 | 81 | Trusov | Nikolai | 69 | 66 | 69 | 70 | 78 | 74 | Sobota | Kristian | 72 | 60 | 74 | 65 | 78 | 78 | Brus | Marco | 71 | 64 | 74 | 69 | 78 | 78 | Haidar Anuawar | Ahmad | 70 | 56 | 69 | 68 | 78 | 76 |
Mohs and Guerao may be the fastest, followed by Vantomme and Goss, but Kump surely has to be the race favourite - with his strength in the hills factored in as well. The stages are all flat rated, but some of them do have uphill finishes, that will particularly favour him.
Van Asbroeck, Van der Sande, Sonnery and Modolo are the other sprinters here with a 70+ hill stat. While Nelson, Haller, Drapac, Nizzolo and Serebriakov will be hoping that the hills don't make too much of a difference.
As well as being the fastest, Mohs brings Lavoine and Stepniak to spearhead his leadout train. Only Kump does not have a 78+ sprint support rider, amongst the favourites, while Podium Ambition also have a good depth of sprinters.
These are the best riders by hill stat:
| | Fl | Hl | St | Rs | Sp | Ac | Levarlet | Guillaume | 69 | 79 | 70 | 72 | 63 | 68 | Kump | Marko | 74 | 76 | 76 | 73 | 80 | 80 | Navardauskas | Ramunas | 75 | 74 | 74 | 74 | 75 | 70 | Jans | Roy | 76 | 74 | 74 | 73 | 74 | 74 | Pasqualon | Andrea | 71 | 74 | 71 | 72 | 72 | 73 | Zielinski | Kamil | 70 | 74 | 71 | 67 | 70 | 74 | Umerbekov | Nikita | 67 | 74 | 72 | 66 | 69 | 71 | Ockeloen | Jasper | 68 | 74 | 69 | 70 | 68 | 68 | Toribio | Jose Vicente | 68 | 74 | 70 | 71 | 64 | 70 | Valencia | Juan Pablo | 68 | 74 | 72 | 70 | 61 | 72 | Anguilet | Charles | 65 | 74 | 69 | 71 | 57 | 64 | Moscon | Gianni | 69 | 74 | 71 | 75 | 57 | 69 |
There's not a lot of strong puncheurs in the race, with home team Haute Route bringing the strongest in Levarlet. And here we see good team support for Kump and Modolo, the sprinters with the best hill stats.
Breakaways are not unknown in this race either, so here's a look at the best flat stat riders:
| | Fl | Hl | St | Rs | Sp | Ac | Ji | Cheng | 80 | 70 | 77 | 70 | 67 | 75 | Bar | Jocelyn | 77 | 70 | 75 | 72 | 77 | 76 | Manamalage | Nipuna Shira | 77 | 58 | 67 | 61 | 53 | 55 | Jans | Roy | 76 | 74 | 74 | 73 | 74 | 74 | Reckweg | Morten | 76 | 64 | 76 | 71 | 68 | 72 | Navardauskas | Ramunas | 75 | 74 | 74 | 74 | 75 | 70 | Van Asbroeck | Tom | 75 | 71 | 75 | 72 | 80 | 78 | Jallays | Welle | 75 | 71 | 69 | 74 | 61 | 63 | Van der Sande | Tosh | 75 | 70 | 78 | 73 | 79 | 79 | Vermote | Julien | 75 | 70 | 74 | 71 | 68 | 72 | Sagan | Juraj | 75 | 68 | 73 | 71 | 61 | 69 | Van Poppel | Boy | 75 | 67 | 73 | 71 | 76 | 78 | Bouet | Maxime | 75 | 67 | 73 | 73 | 67 | 73 | Mohs | Erik | 75 | 65 | 73 | 64 | 83 | 82 |
Finally, the table below shows some of the best U25 riders. First by sprint stat, then by hill stat. Even with time bonuses for the Top 10 on each stage, it seems unlikely that an U25 riders will feature there. Expect this jersey to be contested by those who can survive the hills and/or take time bonuses in breakaways.
| | Fl | Hl | St | Rs | Sp | Ac | Berger | Hakon Frengstad | 73 | 65 | 72 | 68 | 77 | 77 | Barbier | Rudy | 70 | 66 | 69 | 69 | 74 | 75 | Sinclair | Shaquille | 68 | 61 | 69 | 69 | 74 | 73 | Moscon | Gianni | 69 | 74 | 71 | 75 | 57 | 69 | Sirironnachai | Sarawut | 69 | 72 | 73 | 69 | 64 | 72 | Potocki | Pavel | 68 | 72 | 74 | 71 | 62 | 64 | Laas | Martin | 66 | 71 | 66 | 71 | 67 | 72 | Meurisse | Xandro | 72 | 71 | 71 | 69 | 66 | 70 | De Vos | Adam | 67 | 71 | 72 | 71 | 62 | 65 |

Oh no, another race where Isostar will struggle to score any points to try and avoid relegation!

Time for Van Asbroeck to shine. I hope his backup stats will give him a nice overall position. Beating Kump will be hard though.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

These are six racedays I had to plan because my sprinters were the only ones who hadn't reached their maximum allocated racedays yet. I'm not counting on too much but a few nice results could be nice.

A stage win would be ideal. Most of my young riders here for XP, so not expecting lots from them. De Boss has often gone well in stage races as a breakaway option, perhaps he'll get lucky for the U25 jersey as a result. But primarily looking at Ricki to do good sprinting, or the better climbers of Soupe and Mitch to take up the slack and deliver some points. The ideal would be letting others make the lead out and have all three freelancing the finish, no way will the AI manage that though.
But really i don't have high hopes for this race, so we'll just aim to be visible.

Hoping for some upsets by Marco Haller in this race, although we only have 6 riders, I tihnk our lead out isn't too bad, so hopefully it can lead to something |

Hmm, not sure what to expect here, we probably sent too weak a team with 4 young riders, while Bernas, who would likely be our most valuable domestique needed the experience in Herbiers, probably a mistake not to send Morkov or Stachowiak as well, but a 6-day C1 race is important for experience.
Interesting startlist, either Mohs or Kump should dominate, depending on the influence of hill, especially as both should have pretty killer trains. But there are a lot of the more interesting sprinters here. Also, surprised to see only 2 CT teams here, could make some massive points with a fluky breakaway result.
Thanks for the preview SN!

Don't be sarcastic. Logar, Mansilla and Svab are not even mentioned in the preview. If that is not a sign...

Lavoine is back to help Mohs win this race for our 2nd time. I have fond memories of us winning our first GC here only 2 years ago and damn I have high expectations for this, so I might leave very disappointed by the end of it. Kump does scare me for sure, so he is the man to beat.
Guerao has shown great promise of late, so he could defo steal the show here. No Guardini here, as I had to test whether he works with Mohs during planning, so this is the race to see if that does indeed matter after the dissappointing TdU performance with this combo.
Looking forward to dis

First 3 stages should be good for Modolo but otherwise I fear he lacks 1 in sprint to compete.

We've got a very young team here mainly just to get some sweet, sweet XP. Goss still has some OK support, so should do well. I think Guerao will take the GC and a couple of stages too.

Hoping for Goss to at least take a stage and a high GC. And Ji to use his FL stat for a notable result as well.
Hard to see past TdU disaster Kump, but you never know. Obviously there may well be breakaways to upset the sprinters.

Definitely the race that decides if Isostar go down or stay up. Still, I say, Kump ftw.

Maaaan, I really thought I sent a decent team to all races this season, so what does PCT mean by rating me last in every race? |

just when I started to rage about having no train Kump managed to push up the pace and wins his stage - great execution! next stage needs more team support though...go lime force!

Kump starting his dominance early on.
Good ride for Moscon, let's hope he defends the jersey. Was hoping for more from Van Asbroeck, but he let himself get pushed away after good initial positioning.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Fat lazy Goss.. worse than Drapac in such a stage. Ouch.
Kump finally with a good stage. Next stage should be his stage to lose here, so the pressure is there.
