the bad sides of cycling...Chinese Cyclists Wang Xin beats up two officials of the Suiss National team (you may know Danilo Hondo) after the Tour of Hainan Stage supported by his own staff after making them responsible for a crash (team car was 1m besides them according to race officials and video coverage) - first the rider and then the full team got suspended

It's been too long without Lampre's pink, glad we'll finally have a replacement. Pfft

Also, my eyes hurt.

And meanwhile the "ASO puppet" wants to reduce the number of riders in race to 6! What a nice way to put hundreds of riders on the unemployment line

We've had Manzana Postobon pink in a wide range of races this year. That did indeed hurt my eyes.

Would fairly increase unpredictability in racing. However, it's just a silly idea, reducing riders could mean the increase of WT teams but I don't find other teams with the necessary funds to make that step in the future. Also, every year we witness the founding of several new teams, most of them folding a couple of years later, or can't afford certain expenses to compete at a higher level. Just can't see it happening, and wether it does, it will only ruin the sport. Plus, the unemployment. Sure does sound good to see riders unable to find a contract due to reductions, doesn't it.

In hindsight reducing the GT team sizes to 6 would mean lot different strategies, but in turn it would kill the ambitions for teams to battle for two jerseys. With 6 riders something like Team Sunweb did in the Tour would never happen - a KOM and Sprinters jerseys. With much more condensed lineup you need to set a single priority - the luxury of battling on two fronts would be no more.

Reducing riders would only mean reducing the peloton. With 6 riders if the number of teams remain 22 the peloton would be only consisting of 132 riders down from 176 with 8 riders squads and 198 with nine. Some in the internet pitch the idea of having 30 teams which would increase the peloton to 180 riders (around the same size with 8/9 rider squads). But this idea not only sounds silly, but also impractical from a logistic standpoint as we have to take into account the additional vehicles per team which would increase the number of movable obstacles within the stage/race

Increasing the WT team number is the total opposite of what UCI is trying to do. By 2019 it's projected to have 16 WT teams. Teams have come and gone in the World Tour's short history - some left unable to find new sponsor/funding, others decided to go to the lower leagues (from a financial standpoint Cofidis is better as PCT) or some survived but barely (case in point Slipstream and UAE). Look at IAM - a team that was relatively well in the PCT, but were eaten by the WT machine and not very long after they've crumbled. Hopefully history would be more kindful to Aqua Blue (considered by some as IAM's spiritual successor).

Decreasing the lineups would mean even more reduced squads. Which in turn would see many riders trying to remain relevant and some will find a home in the lower leagues, but won't be the same. UCI thinks that with less riders in one race this would in turn help establishing new WT races, right? How wrong they are - why would BMC, Sky or Movistar care to send their bast riders in low-profile races like Tour of Gunagxi, Tour of Turkey, RideLondon etc. despite having the World Tour label on them? The core races that the big teams care about are - the three GT, the Belgian/Dutch Classics (RVV, P-R, Amstel Gold, LFW, LBL), the classics in Italy (MSR, Il Lombardia and to some extent Strade Bianche) and sorta the pre-GT 1-week races (P-N, T-A, Dauphine, Switzerland). Why UCI thinks that if they add a new rece in China would suddenly make the teams, riders, sponsors and fans care?

In respect of the World Tour debate, why don't they just make it not compulsory to enter every World Tour Race throughout the year. The World Tour teams all have to race at least 80% of the World Tour events otherwise they lose there status.

It would get rid of pointless teams entering races they don't want to be at and give more opportunities to continental teams who would turn up with a strong team and actually race. Some races are just glorified training rides for the World Tour Teams at the moment.

I know that some races would struggle to attract teams, but it could also be a way of weeding out the unpoplular races and replace them with more current races and keep the Sport evolving.

Also, why not implement a promotion/relegation system like they do on PCM?(or used to anyway) That way the most deserving teams will ride at the bigger races and it will be less of a question of politics as it is at the moment.

The World Tour being compulsory for the teams is one solution. Let's say that UCI drops this requirement, but implement the rule "to keep their status the team must have X racing days from the WT calendar". In that way teams would prepare for races that they want to actually compete

The problem with wildcards in general is that teams from the race. TdF 2018's wildcards would be given to French teams only (go figure out who) and this bugs me - why Cofidis is considered better team for wildcard than Caja Rural or Aqua Blue. Sadly the team nationality card is too strong when it comes to wildcards for WT races. I have no problems with local teams, but I'd want non-local teams to get a chance at the big events for a change.

Ah the pro/rel system - the age old question in cycling. I think the system would only increase the gap between the big teams and the smaller teams and would potentialy sway potential new investors. If the system was implemented the promoted team would be relagated back if he doesn't have bigger budget needed to survive.

It does ask the question as to why we can't have a proper mountain World Championships every few years?

Speaking of the angry Chineese, who assaulted members of the Swiss team for no real reason, is banned for 2 years. Some team members were also banned for failing to control him and the team itself (Ke Yi Look) is banned from competitions for 2018. Which means that Wang Xin ruined the careers of his teammates - classy act.
