We will when FIFA expand it. Not saying that is good and I do agree that maybe we should get it anyway, but at least it's coming Pfft

It used to be a free ticket for Australia. They got better as a result of regular exposure to the World Cup and have now moved into the Asian qualifiers. The same could happen with New Zealand if they get a chance.

Imagine American Samoa or Fiji Qualifying. That would be a real story Smile

Yeah I think we have the potential, is currently one of if not the top most played sport actually here so more exposure could get us very good (not that we are guaranteed a free ticket, NC and Fiji seem to push us a bit Rolling Eyes ) Then Fiji or NC, Tahiti, anyone getting a qualifier after that and maybe even qualifying would be amazing Grin

It was never a free ticket to Australia. The reason they moved to Asian Qualifiers is to have a shot at direct promotion. They topped the qualifiers at the first attempt Pfft

Oceania having a direct spot would be stupid. NZ has to prove that they are good enough to take part by actually defeating a country that has more than 1 decent football pitch.

I do see what you guys mean, maybe it was me being too blindly nationalistic Pfft But agree that we should have to prove ourselves to get into the current world cup but generally we are not going to win 5th place CONMEBOL, we're lucky it's Peru where we could have a chance. But in the expanded world cup I do feel it's a no-brainer for 1 direct 1 qualifier if they do want it to expand in Oceania.

Soccer is by far dead in the USA after tonight. Disliked the sport as it is but America lost many many fans tonight and I am one of them. Here's to the ladies in 2019!

It really did...hopefully this will shake up the organization that seems completely lost.

The USA is simple, we are not a fan base of soccer purists, it isn't our favorite sport (heck it is probably just in the top 5). The US fan mentality is different from many other places, especially Europe. US fans don't care about playing "the beautiful game" the US is simple, win, win ugly, win by playing 11 behind the ball and counter, whatever, just win.

The current coaching (like the previous) wants to be that purist playing the beautiful game, without the talent to do so. Pulisic is probably the only player on the US side that can play that style, of dominant possession with quick decisive passes that can carve an organized defense. Sure the US has more talent than TnT it doesn't mean we can play a style that doesn't fit.

To draw it into cycling, Sky is more talented than basically any other team in Grand Tours, but if they chose to ride instead for sprint stages, bringing better flat specialists, the chances for Froome to win would be greatly diminished. That is basically what the US coaching does to the team. Playing a style they cannot support, the defense of the US is sluggish, and cannot keep pace with essentially any of the Central American strikers, leaving the team in horrible situations time and time again.

It is time for an administration that wants to win, and wants that more than trying to make it look like the US is the best, most talented team in Concacaf able of playing the same style as the European powers.

That is 100% true.. American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey are by par the Powerhouse 4 sports in America. The 5th spot is hard to claim but could be Soccer/Golf/Auto Racing. Fans do not care who is on the team or who they are playing, we just want wins. This is unlike the Powerhouse 4 sports where we care who plays for what team and dig deeper into the sport itself.

I always find it strange because soccer is probably on of the most played youth sports here if not the most played, and yet it has no momentum on the professional level.

To not even make the WC is such an embarrassment that I don't even know where to begin.

The USA can make a really attractive counter-attack based team. Not the tika-taka "beauty" of Europeans or South Americans, but the US can play with some real pace and flair if you get the right personel into the squad. And i hope the US FA takes the opportunity to clear out some of the more experienced (old) squad memebers for new younger vibrancy.

GK: Ethan Horvath or William Yarborough. Tim Howard can still deliver, but take this chance to get the next generation in. Horvath has good potential, and Yarborough is one of the best gk's in the Mexican league.
DF: Yedlin has huge pace, as full-back he can cause problems on the overlap. Miazga, not going to make it at Chelsea but he's a good CB that can grow. Brooks, doing very well in Germany for a while, same for Chandler who can play full-back if needed. Rosenberry has been impressive recently, and Carter-Vickers at Tottenham looks really good for the future. Granted need another good quick full-back.
MF: Pulisic is a mega talent, real world class. Arriola and Acosta have good feet and speed. Roldan is a great playmaker from deeper. Trapp is a good wider player. Green has speed and deliver. Stanko a great central holder. Add Bradley as stability in the center it's all the makings of a good creative midfield.
ST: Wood can finish well. Morris is a great mover, really hard to track. Partner those up, or with Agudelo or Johansson and it's a strike pairing that can cause real difficulty.

It wouldn't beat the best in the world, but would cause real problems. Sit deep with the defence, spread it out wide fast on a break and there's enough talent and flair to do well.

I saw a few American quotes that summarize everything:

"Apparently there is a US Soccer game today. If it wasn't for Twitter I wouldn't have known."

"The most important US Soccer game in years is being aired on beIN Sports, which only 10% of Americans have. Keep saying Soccer is relevant in America."

"Time to clean house and bring in all new players for US Soccer. I know teenagers playing on the streets that would show more heart than those guys."

"This was the darkest loss in US Soccer history, one which will set soccer back decades in America."

"I was really disappointed the USA men's team didn't qualify for the World Cup. Then I remembered I couldn't care less about soccer."

There is also a lot of moaning going on about how Argentina was 'allowed' to win and how Colombia and Peru pulled a truce to draw the game, once they found out Chile were losing, which allowed both teams to qualify directly/for playoff respectively.

Let's not forget that outrageous goal Panama had to eliminate the USA... I think Panama should have had a draw in their game and it would have been a whole different story. This is worse than Mexico in 2014 Pfft

I don't know, this was a pretty big f*ck up especially given the recent growth in indtroducing goal-line tech. It highlights the major need to include it for all major internationals, and FIFA really are running out excuses. It's just cost a team entry to a World Cup, at least the handball would have needed a video ref which is much harder to do.

Last night was great for watching football. First the South America matches, where still anything could happen and then Concacaf. Very happy about Panama qualifying, as I always used to play them in my FIFA WC games. Smile
And honestly their goal is not so outrageous if you consider the correct decision there would've been a penalty + red card for the Costa Rica defender.

Also quite a shame that the Americans now act so butthurt. If they don't care why bother writing those tweets. To supporting a sports team also belongs dealing with defeats.

People are used to winning. We never lose in basketball, are near the top in hockey, and constantly perform Top 3 at the Olympics. It strikes people as odd when there is that one thing we can't even beat a Mid 90's ranked soccer team in and qualify for the World Cup. People are acting butthurt more with the intentions of persuading anyone who will listen to make changes.

Worst thing is, they don't even know what they're talking about. After USA-Belgium at the 2014 World Cup, they were outraged when Lukaku put his shoulder against his opponent to make the winning goal. I have to admit I would not like to be on the the receiving end of that, but that could never have been a foul.

Messi was awesome, I really hope he can get a world cup for Argentina. The rest of the team seems mediocre at best though.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Exactly, there's never been a free pass (unless you count the host country of course). OFC was only ever 0.5 at the most, which is why Australia and New Zealand had only made one World Cup each before 2006!

We often had to beat the Kiwis first or even Taiwan and Israel due to political reasons. That was fair enough, but the final playoff usually knocked us out.

(partial spoilers for old results)
Spoiler
AFC and Africa were both initially combined with the OFC
1966, we lost to North Korea in a play-off, who then got a walkover into the World Cup when all the African teams withdrew

Africa then left, here are the AFC/OFC years
1970, we lost a playoff to Israel, who got the only spot in the World Cup
1974, we qualified for the first time, beating South Korea in a play-off to secure the only spot
1978, we made it to the final group but Iran got the only spot
1982, we lost to the Kiwis, who then had to become the 2nd best in Asia to qualify for their first World Cup

OFC splits from AFC
1986, we lost a play-off to Scotland (~12-14th in UEFA)
1990, we finished behind Israel and the Kiwis. Israel lost a play-off to Colombia (3rd CONMEBOL)

1994, we beat Canada (2nd CONCACAF) in a play-off, then lost to Argentina (4th CONMEBOL) by one goal
1998, we lost a play-off to Iran (4th in Asia) on away goals
2002, we lost a play-off to Uruguay (5th CONMEBOL)
2006, we finally qualified by beating Uruguay (5th CONMEBOL)... on penatlies

Syria were incredibly impressive though, that team had so much heart and are easily the best Asian team I've seen outside of Australia, South Korea, Japan and maybe the Saudis. It would have been great to see them qualify, especially since they almost got there playing their home ties in Malaysia.

I always find it strange because soccer is probably on of the most played youth sports here if not the most played, and yet it has no momentum on the professional level.

It's the same over here, parents love it because it's seen as less dangerous than AFL or Rugby which would be mirrored by NFL Football in the US. It would only be the 4th/5th most popular sport for most Australian adults, but we've always had such strong migrant cultures that it thrived anyway.

Personally, I think USA going out is quite amusing, since they're basically the only team to stuff up an easier chance to qualify than the Socceroos.
