18 teams in average participate in the 2017 C1/C2 races! The average throughout all divisions is 21 1/2.
Quite impressive though that despite CT teams are "forced" to race C1 races, the amount of oversubscribed races is not high.
2 races were oversubscribed
Mountains, Stage Race, Just 2 rd? The Tour of East Java was the race with biggest interest. 29 teams in total wanted to race there (19PCT, 10CT). In the end 5 CT teams missed out.
Nelspruit Classic was the other one with 28 teams trying to race there. 7 CT teams of which 4 missed out.
The only other race in C1/C2 that has a full startlist is Milano - Torino. Fortunately no team had to miss out here.
14 Races with 20+ teams
13 of those are C1 races, which in general have the higher average. This means 24 races have less than 20 teams and in fact all but one C2 event.
The races with 20+ are a nice mix of all terrains. Puncheur races (TdU,...), Mountain Races (Costa Rica, Romandie...), Cobbles (Kigali, GW,...), TT (Olympia, Slovenie), classics and stage races.
Langkawi actually the race with most interest in C2.
Lowest Interest
GP Yekaterinburg was a no go for many teams. Only 12 teams and all from CT making this the race with the smallest startlist.
Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne came close, in especially as only 11 CT teams went there, but 2 PCT teams improved it to 13 in total, which is the same amount as in Monterrey TTT as lowest C1 event. Only 8 PCT teams go there with 5 CT teams trying to get "easy" points there as well.
At 14 teams South Africa is another special case as it`s the only C1/C2 event with simply 0 interest by CT managers.
CT in C1 races
As said, CT had to ride in C1 to fill their planners. This obviously leads to nicely filled PCT low interesters. Best example are the cobbled C1 classics, which are some of the best filled C1 races as 10 CT managers went for Gent-Wevelgem, 8 to Kigali and so on.
Also Costa Rica or Slovenie with 9 teams from the CT while the TT classics see 8 CT in the ITT and 5 in the TTT.
PCT in C2 races
With restrictions and lower chances to score points, it was never supposed to be a way many use.
Only 6 C2 races in fact have PCT teams. 2 in Langkawi, Euskal Bizikleta and KBK, while one PCT team in Windhoek ITT (which is rather surprisingly low), Cacak Classic and Battenkill.
Surprisingly no one in Herald Sun Tour which was a huge step towards Spotify`s PT promotion last year.
Tour of America
Nicely shared startlist here. 16 teams in total make the Tour of America a (almost) GT like event this season. Surprisingly 8 CT teams decided to go there with the same amount of PCT managers. Surely the CT top riders could do well there but race days are lower for those and hence a bigger gamble.
The other longer C1C2 events rather full in fact with Tachira also at 17 teams (CT only though).
Idea by SN and mainly used his 2015 write-up after 2016 was "forgotten"
Lucky me to have placed East Java high in my priority list. Lots of team missing out on that race.
Seeing the very low amount of teams in Yekaterinburg, i'm regretting now of the team i've sent there, although I had a clash with Tour of Japan (C1), so most of the rider who could score something weren't available
Very interesting write up. I guess East Java will be challenging and I suspect we'll see all the top climbers (Amador will be there as well). I'm also really hoping that the CT teams won't send any of the top stage racers in that division to the Tour of America
Great info thanks Roturn, and good to see that reporter time will be well spent. Unsurprisingly delighted to see 16 teams sign up for ToA, even if we are not one of them this season. Couple of C2 races with surprisingly low numbers, but I guess sustainable, and hopefully the PCM AI copes with a small start list OK. Think I am at both of the 'under-subscribed' races, and KBK is a sponsor WIN goal. Even with a small number of teams, still expect a lot of riders with good stats for the terrain.
Surprised by Romandie having so many teams, thought the TTT would be a deterrent and tried to take advantage of that with Kwiatkowski (although Roglic surely will be unbeatable there ).
Also, I'm the PCT team in KBK, Cacak and Battenkill, I wanted to get 4 riders from level 1 --> 3 plus a stagiare to level 2 and 3 other riders to level 3 so since my leaders had used all their RDs decided to use a few days to improve my riders, fortunately we have interesting options in Kaspa and Gunnar for the cobbled races at least.
