Rui Costa seems so meagre in power nowadays. Staying in this team won't be profitable. Anyway, hope Contador has something left for tomorrow. It's time for El Pistolero's final shot.

Imo, on Palmares alone its of course hard, but seeing as nowadays its more competitive + strategy riding + super teams like Sky, its Impossible to do what Merckx and Hinault did. And If he had a better team in the past few years + better luck, who knows, maybe he could have won 1 or 2 GTs more. So again, just imo, to me he is the greatest GT rider of all-time. And on pure heart and will to win, there is no one better than him.

Based on palmares, no of course not. Based on panache, he and nothing but him.

Well you say that now but I bet in the days Merckx was at least equally ruthless, same for Hinault Smile

Haha Contador fanboy is so funny - many are better than contador - Froome e.g Wink

Yeah Merckx is pretty decent and all, but has he ever had a Fuente Dé? I don't think so.

I can't notice if this is sarcasm?
If it isn't:

Marseille 1971.
over the Tourmalet 1969.

My favourite statistic I've heard about Merckx is the claim that, of basically all properly established professional races around during Merckx's race, the only one he has failed to win was Paris - Tours.

Don't know if it's true, especially as it's sort of vague to say professional races, but sounds awesome. Pfft

He never won Milano - Torino either, one of the oldest and most prestigious classics ever, which Alberto has.

Legends of the sport but their panache is for me just anecdotes as it is a time I have not experienced. So for me in comparison, their palmares always matters, their panache doesn't, because you have to experience the latter and watching vids and docs on youtube just doesnt cut it for me

It's actually a quote by Noël Vantyghem. "Eddy Merckx and I combined won all the classics, I won Paris-Tours and he won all the others.

You can't compare any man to Eddy Merckx by the way, only Marianne Vos comes close.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Strangely I've hardly ever seen Merckx in action on youtube or whatever.

But I've lived some of the stories in biographies and books and I must say it does make an impact, almost as much as being there.
Of course, actually seeing it does more. Personally for me that includes De Gendt Ventoux, De Gendt Stelvio or Sagan Ronde v Vlaanderen Cool

Not to diminish what Merckx did, and those are some of the greatest performances ever, but back then there wasnt any teams that could control the race, let alone strategise against somebody. It was literally everymen for himself, and thats why Merckx would win from far out (plus he was far superior). But to defend matt's argument, to nowadays pull off what Bertie did in Fuente De, where attacking from such a distance is like suicide, against arguably tougher competition (and today's team-leader commited Teams), I think that performance is more spectacular than Eddy Merckx's.

matt17br
I hope you aren't taking my argument seriously Pfft

I don't think Contador is even close to being as good as Merckx palmares and probably even talent wise, but honestly, you can show me every single piece of evidence of all the attacks Merckx did and I'll never believe he was a more exciting rider than Alberto overall. As 'boring' as cycling is nowadays you can always count on him to light up every stage, and that's something you can say for basically no rider that has been at the highest level in the last uhm, 25 years?

Chiappucci kinda was like Alberto, but lacked his talent. And before then cycling was just completely different. You can't just compare 2017 to 1973 or the mid 40s.

I wasnt refering to the part about who's better, thats not the part of your argument I was refering to Pfft

I was comparing the Merckx long range attacks with Bertie's, and that to me Bertie's Fuente De is more special bc of today's cycling, whilst back in the day it was the norm for Merckx to go alone from KM 0
