Yes I don't necessarily agree with the decision either, but Barguil is top class when it comes to stage hunting and is potentially even good for a Top 10 here depending on form. Why ruin a good thing when you have one in a free role and the other for the GT captaincy. This could have been gold but way to fuck up. Especially when this someone is Kelderman who is up against the likes of Froome, Contador, Nibali and Chaves. What does Sunweb expect? That Kelderman podiums? lol Because anything other than a podium does not justify to have Barguil as a superdom. The guy is a hotter asset than Kelderman ever has been and there is no use in burning Barguil for domestique duties. These duties he could have taken up later in the race too, if needed and Kelderman proves himself. Right now, based upon performance, there is no reason to put Barguil in the service of Kelderman.

There is also no need to shame Barguil. He has shown at the Tour that he helps the team a lot and that he enjoys his stay there. It's too bad this great relationship ends so sour.

If team politics ("we are big family", "we race for everybody", "I win a stage, next day I work for the team) start to go against the team's potential success, it's sunweb's fault. Not Barguil's. Using a supreme stage hunter like Barguil in a superdom role doesn't provide this kinda success. It goes way against it, and that's just because of team politics and Barguil leaving.

Makes little sense to put all the pressure to perform on Kelderman with that track record.

I'm opening a bet after the end of the first week. Who finishes higher in the GC: Kelderman or teammate and alleged domestique yet much more exciting and superior Sam Oomen?

Who's in for it? Pfft

@Shonak

How would have helping Kelderman's yesterday hurt Barguil's chance at winning stage in the next days? If anything, losing time would allow him more space of action. To me it looks like he actually wanted to ride for the GC and not go for stage wins like the initial plan was. (or maybe that was what he was saying out loud, but always aiming for the GC)

Of course Kelderman would normally be the second option for the GC behind Barguil if they'd go head to head. But this is not the problem here. Barguil lead the team at the Tour, Dumoulin at the Giro, now it was Kelderman's turn to lead a GT.

But what was the point of Barguil not helping Kelderman - he didn't try anything from the group but finished last in it - could have finished at the exact same place, only limitting the losses for Wilco without loosing anything on the way

Dunno, I havn't seen that stage so I can't say anyhting about the situation. But sending a lightweight climber back to do domestique dutie sin the flat sure is a rather senseless thing imo. As for the CN interview, Barguil is probably himself surprised that he hold sup so well here. So I hold no value to him saying he wants to work for Kelderman. maybe he feels like he can podium now and thus he doesn't want to use up energy or risk losing time in what could end up a close fight for podiums. I can just guess his exact reasoning behind that decision.

The bet sounds good, matt. All on Oomen hypetrain.

Contador _O_

Such a shame about the stomach issues on stage 3. This would be an epic duel for Vuelta otherwise.

This could have been an epic Vuelta 2014 remake if Alberto didn't feel bad in stage 3 Sad

Finally a big win for Jalaphilippe too. He was so close in the past, beautiful to see him on top of a Grand Tour stage, after all the injuries.

Now i think Contador will be second in Madrid after Froome. Both are too strong for the others. Cant wait to Calar Alto to see these two put over 1 minute on everyone else

I don't know, it's early to judge when we haven't even got a proper mountain stage and we're still in the first week. I'd say the likes of Nibali, Zakarin and Yates etc. who have only done the Giro will get in even better shape as the Vuelta advances, while Froome, Aru, Bertie etc. will probably be less sharp. Hence why Froome is using any chance he has to put seconds on his rivals, he even openly said he doesn't know if he can keep this form peak for the entireness of the Vuelta.

Jalaphilippe needs an extreme palmares makeover. Much better rider than his palmares so far.

Where he did say that? But yeah its too early to judge it. But the worst thing is that he had that setback on stage 3. Because if he will be good right to the end of this Vuelta there will be a lot of - "what if" thoughts.
Maybe Froome will not be so lucky either
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

Well, by one side, it's a shame that Contador lost 2'30 on Andorra because if he can hold this level in high mountains, that duel would have been epic with Froome.

By the other side, Contador will attack in every single mountain stage with that time loss

What happened to Haig today? Just taking it easy after his efforts so far? Or did anything happen?

In case anyone knows/cares Smile

Yeah that's the positive thing about it and with maybe Nibbles also getting involved in it, we could get potentially get a spectacle for Bertie's last race.

A puncture at a critical moment, according to Chaves in their backstage pass. Guess he sat up after that.

Is froome bluffing or why was he so far in the back on that climb?
