2017 Giro d'Italia Route Revealed

It`s that time again. The Grand Tours slowly are being leaked and here it is. The 2017 Giro presentation.
It will be a bit shorter this year as I guess, you all want to see the full rae profiles forum, which is almost ready to be made public.

The times of Damiano Cunego (2007-2011 & 2014) are over, even though he did a last big effort to deliver VisitUkraine the promotion. What a legend he is.
Also Ricco (2012) unlikely is a potential winner this year.

But the other three riders on the winners list Phinney (2013), Schleck (2014) or most recent Pluchkin (2016) are potentially riders for the first GT of the year.

But what about the home riders? Any Italians able to grab the Giro title 2017? Cattaneo and Nibali might have best chances but to be honest, it`s not the biggest really. A country dominated by the veterans, puncheurs and sprinters and urgently needing a new GT star.

Week 1: It all starts rather easy

i.imgur.com/7AVm2e6.png

A 6km prologue will decide about the first leader followed by two stages for sprinters with some difficulties though already!

The 4th stage then offers a 30km TTT and hence a good team support will be vital.
It`s not guaranteed the TTT`s winner will get a lot of GC points though. Too difficult the next stage with lots of hills and also the last 2 "sprinter" stages this week are all but pan flat.

Week 2: Starting big, ending calm

i.imgur.com/6LCYT6Q.png

3 consecutive uphill finishes will finally see the GC riders. Also the 11th stage is very mountaineous and after the race half a first picture of the final GC can probably be made.

The last 3 stages are potential sprinter stages of for the breakaway. A few days to relax for the GC.

Week 3: Lots of mountain passes

i.imgur.com/7JLZD1G.png

Hardly any flat bits in the last week. It starts with a very tough mountain stage over many Cat. 1`s and even though the next 2 stages are not mountain rated, it`s hardly stages to really relax.

Then the decision for the Giro title to be made on the stages 18-20. 3 times ending in the height. First two long climbs to be passed with the final being on the Etna. Then a mountain time trial on the Plan de Corones and a final up and down all day stage ending on top of Passo Fedaia.

The final stage then without any climb but I think it`s enough by then and the winner can celebrate on this day while the (remaining) sprinters can go for a last stage victory.

8 Flat
4 Hill
6 Mountain (6 MTF)
3 Time Trial (TTT, ITT, M ITT)

Hoping we'll get another wildcard after the Dall'Oste show of last year.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Throw in a few more ITT kilometers and Gesink might have ditched Vuelta and Cali for this. Let's see what the Vuelta and the Tour will bring before jumping to decisions though Grin

If I'm not mistaken stage 18 finishes on the Etna on Sicily and then the day after we have a MTT to Kronplatz which is in the North? Have you guys invented teleporting? Pfft

Wow, this looks like quite a brutal route that will spread even the top 10 far and wide. Still good number of opportunity for sprinters, so hopefully will get a strong entry list, just don't see many sprinters making it through 21 days. Finally always like to see a TTT just to make life as hard as possible for managers making team selections!

WCC can only dream of riding in PT/GT races, but will still follow with lots of interest.

Are you doing your GT news thread again btw? Was very useful and cool to have last year Grin

Very interesting route with a grand finale, as the penultimate stage looks to be beyond brutal Pfft Looking forward to see how the Giro compares to the other Grand Tours!

Mmm, I'd like to if time permits, will have to wait and see though. In reality it did not work out as well as I'd hoped last year, got off to a decent start, but didn't maintain the intended momentum/content (totally my fault). If I recall correctly, i started after transfers and before the season kick-off last year. Seems the best time for it so will give thought at that stage Wink.

Both stage 11 and stage 20 have Duran-Staulanza-Giau combo. Pfft
Though after stage 20 there are two more climbs after Giau are Falzarego and Fedaia.
Stage 8 looks like Montecopiolo and stage 10 looks like Plan di Montecampione. Stage 5 looks really nice. Also, what are the final two climbs on stage 15? Because they look like Fedaia-Pordoi or Fedaia-Sella, in which case I appreciate the use of Fedaia. Cool

Yeah they do.

Though after stage 20 there are two more climbs after Giau are Falzarego and Fedaia.

That's right.

Stage 8 looks like Montecopiolo

Ok still a clear round.

and stage 10 looks like Plan di Montecampione.

Doesn't count this one was easy Pfft

Also, what are the final two climbs on stage 15? Because they look very similar to Fedaia-Pordoi or Fedaia-Sella, in which case I appreciate the use of Fedaia.

It's Fedaia-Pordoi yeah.

How do you even do this Pfft

Well, I design lots of stages/races, some of which I show at Race Design Thread at CN Forum. And the climbs like Fedaia etc. are used a lot on that thread where there are many users show their races. Part of the reason why I spend so much time on CN Forum.
