He followed the wrong guy essentially and got ruined because of it. It was poor tactics, but come the Tour this will not happen because of stronger domestiques for both Froome and Porte. Porte actually had a better day than the rest considering the champion performance he put on the final climb.
I really dislike all this "bad day" talk, clearly he is a changed rider and throughout this year, he had 1 bad day (Paris-Nice Stage 2). Others have had so many more, so can you please look at the positives before you look at things that have had its time in the past.
Spot on! Richie had an amazing day, practically rode solo for most of the stage, a lot like Cadel and BMC. If Richie was in that chase group then he wins by a mile. Clearly wrong tactic on second last climb but he nearly pulled it off. Clearly the strongest rider at the moment.
Yes, Porte is clearly the best of them there is a level below Fuglsang. |

.
Even though I'm very happy for Fuglsang, have to agree with this.

Yeah, Fuglsang had the race of his life there! Astana adding another variable to the Tour this year.
We are really delving into the unknown this year with Froome's poor condition (or so it seems), Porte's wondrous form, Contador's unpredictability, Movistar's ambiguous team (leader could be quintana, valverde or even soler) and Astana's angels.
Most open Tour for a while! |

Loosing over a minute on the last stage is a bad day, whatever the circumstances. You say he followed the wrong gut. He actually couldn't follow the right guys when it mattered.
TdF is open but I still make Froome favourite. He'll be in better shape in July.

He lost time to Jacob, but not to Christ, Alejandro or Alberto. It is only fair that he did not expect Jacob to be able to do what he did and seen it that light he did pretty good, was just not enough on the day.

Agree with this. Porte had a fantastic ride but underestimated Fuglsang, can happen in those shorter tours. Not seeing it happen in the TdF. My money's still on the Portinator!

I think all people except for Ringo saw Porte here as the strongest rider and when you climb like that, he may had a weak moment but surely not a bad day.

Fuglsang could easily follow him, was 10 seconds stronger and won two mountain stages. |

So what? Fuglsang was super strong and I applaud his win and I think it's richly deserved but Porte was still the strongest rider, on the climbs and against the clock. The strongest doesnt always win and that's good because cycling lives off that, too.

1 mountain stage: Fuglsang won
2: mountain stage: Fuglsang and Porte together over the finish line.
3: mountain stage: Fuglsang won and more than a minute stronger than Porte. |

Le Gac was also the strongest mountain rider!
1. Porte, Fuglsang and Froome may have beaten him with their teammates pacing but if they never would've dropped him 1 on 1.
2. If Le Gac had the proper support (say Pinot and Reichenbach at least) he would've finished at least 19 seconds faster than Aru on the second mountain stage.
3. He didn't have a bad tactical day but Porte did.

But what, if Tony would've been allowed to climb? He's basically Dumoulin in good. Just think about that.

Well, that is not wrong. I mean, look at this:
Demare got badly outsprinted twice!

Porte was the strongest rider, no doubt, but had a weak moment psychically and tactically on Colombiere which costed him the race- |

Well he wasn't the strongest because he lost. Fulgsang was the strongest over the week.
If Porte was the strongest and lost then what chance does he have at the Tour when the big fish will be in top form?

Porte whining about the teams not letting his guys come back
https://www.cyclin...-dauphine/
At least he sees it as a lesson for le Tour. Because there'll be more where that came from.

Uhm, sure man, whatever keeps you asleep at night. I can't be bothered to argue with people again, who don't care about the context of a race and apparently just bother to look at a result and derive from the odd difference from rider A to rider B who the strongest is. There's way too much of this discussion going on lately.
