"If there is a simple battle and Dumoulin is alone, the pink jersey has to close [down] everyone who attacks him. If I'm fourth and he asks me to work I won't do a turn, because finishing third or fourth won't change my life."
- Vincenzo Nibali
Both Quintana and Nibali dont care. Only thing they care about is the win. 2 days left.
Good for them, however it won't make it any less funny if they lose their podium spots this way.
We often critisize riders for wanting to keep what they have; its certainly refreshing that both doesnt seem to give a crap about the podium and play psychological mind games on Tom. I don''t really get why it would be that funny if they lose podium for it (they most likely won't anyways) - Nibali has 2 wins in the Giro already along with 2 podiums. Quintana has 3 podiums in TdF. 2 big champions who go for the win - Pinot and Zakarin getting higher in the GC might even help them as thats more riders to look out for for Dumoulin. Obviously, now they just need to have the legs which they certainly didn't have today, Quintana and Nibali.
It aint over till its over boy, If Nibali sees any weaknees you will pay for it. This time Nibali from the RAI studio today when Tom said he didn't understand him and Nairo's tactics and he hoped they won't podium:
Nibali on Tom: "he's great, he controlled very well, he's the strongest of all. But he sounds a bit too cocky. He can't ask us to work for him. What does he want? That me and Nairo pull for him until Milano and then thank him? He hopes we lose the podium, why should I care about getting 2nd, 3rd or 5th? He could lose the podium as well if he keeps riding this way."
Big Nibali fan here. War!
Oh lol, I guess that happens when you don't have it in the legs. Nibali already salty as fuck. And it's still some days to go. Well, at least he shows again, that he is a pretty sore loser.

Thats what happens when you have won 4 GTs and a monument
Interesting if he can boost his performance today with some magical Nibali renaissance towards the end. He will be even more motivated, so will the tifosi. |

Making Nibbles angry is not a smart move from Tommy tbh. Nibbles is capable of doing some crazy shit. |

Not the smartest thing to do by Dumoulin but oh well, a little bit of polemica is never bad. Tbh today was quite a dud. I expected way more from Quintana and Nibali. Seems they don't have the legs. So I'm not sure what the fuck they want to do tomorrow or saturday |

Dumoulin doesn't need to win time off of Nibali and Quintana and Zakarin, Pozzo and Pinot were far enough down that they wouldn't be able to take enough time back on him on this stage so there was no need for him to chase them.
They were only a threat to Nibali and to a lesser extent Quintana. I can fully understand why Dumoulin would have expected them to chase down Pinot as the Frenchman would be a threat to them before he is to Dumoulin. It's the same reason why Pinot had Reichenbach chase down when Zakarin made a move earlier on the climb and Dumoulin didn't chase him.

Yes but why not mix it up a bit.. When you climb like he does you can get cocky a bit I like when there's some drama and beef going on since on the road today, there was obviously far too little action. Tbh the two mega multi mountian stages have been disappointing, mostly because of Quintana's and Nibali's lack of action for whatever reason, probably they just don't have it.
Now of course anything can happen in the next two days. Nibali won last year's Giro within just two days of a coup d'etat but the two best stages for that to happen again are passed and who knows how the other two stages will be. Despite for that odd shit incident, TomTom was really flawless up till now.
@Riis Yes I fully understand that. Still, like I said, I think it's funny if they lose their podium due to inactivity. Riders like Quintana and Nibali can basically lose the podium in two ways: By going for the win big time, and making Fuente De stuff happen; or they miscalculate it tactically and underestimate the competition. In case it's the former it's a heroic defeat I can only bow my head to. If it's the latter, well.. I might as well chuckle since apparently they don't care about their podiums anyway, so don't take it so serious.
Hm, I do wonder thoiugh what the italian media will say when there's no italian on the podium of the 100th Giro. Nibali might as well be prepared to read some nasty press then, but hey, he doesn't care about it so he'll be fine....

Oh of course. Nibali full rambo. I'd love to see it, it's always nice when Nibali is making his magic happen. But I prefer racing over big words and Nibali likes to talk big just as much as others do.

Agree, but I think it was obvious today why they raced rather passively on Stelvio. Quintana wasnt great. He tried a long range, maybe didnt go all out 100%, but he nevertheless pressured Dumo heavliy. Nibali was even worse than Nairo today, he didn't have anything going really.
Obviously tho, Quintana and Nibali care (its always nice to be on the podium), everyone does. So does Contador - theres a reason why he was angry after Chaves overtook him for the podium last year. But today they played a very wise psychological game on Dumo, basically saying that they dont give a shit and expect him to close everything down AND, most importantly, that they haven't been intimidated to fight for a podium now. Its still race on, important message IMO. |

I don't know why people are already so convinced what's going to happen. After Kruijswijk last year I'm never going to say anything until the very last finish of the very last stage.
And Nibali has serious voodoo magic |

Today's stage will probably not the best to gain a lot of time at Dumoulin, as it is relatively easy untill th efinal climb. And because that climb begins steep, and drops in gradients in the second part, Quintana and Nibali have to attack early in the climb. Because the 2nd half of it, is Dumoulin his terrain.
Saturday will be different. Nibali has to send a few domestiques in a breakaway, so he can attack in the descend of the Monte Grappa and uses them in the flat 15km towards the final climb. Quintana will probably attack too early, fall back and try again in the last climb.
Will be 2 very exciting days, and for once, I won't mind if the races will be boring. Go Tom!!!!

Please stop hyping
I was hyped so much about Ortisei stage by you and others (we had an argument about the route some months ago), also many people including you were saying that Nibali was gonna go berserk and I also thought that Nibali would go berserk in Ortisei stage and nothing happened and now the remaining stages suit TD as stage 19 and 20 are just horribly designed.
Still, cheering for Nibali though. Forza Nibbles! |
