Portugal won because the guy is very much mentally disabled, Bulgaria was up there because cute young boy. Moldova real winners!

...I dont want to come off as rude but are we seriously voting people for their disabilities? Portugal's song was decent but it's the last song I'd have expected to see in the ESC like shit I expected some hype ass chorus to come after each of his lines and he just kept on going with that weak sentimental tomfoolery

The fact is Portugal won both of the votings with an advantage of over 100 points and I don't think it's because of Salvador's disability. I think it's because of the song itself, I mean its a completely different song from the others and even though I think the songs NOT written in English are starting to get more popular as we can see, to a song in Portuguese (beautiful lyric), therefore a song that most people don't understand to win its because of the feeling that the song transmits to people and not because of Salvador's disability. Yet I may be a bit biased, or not make any sense at all, but the point is I believe Portugal's song is a fair winner and the singers disability didn't have a major impact in the decision.

OK, what is (if there is) Salvador Sobral's disabillity? I don't think this played role, but surely these played:
* The song was one of the four sung entirely in language other than English. This alone made the song stand out from the rest. Fun trivia fact - the last time a song performed not in English, was in 2007 when Serbia won (IMO Bulgaria had far better chances to win that year than now or even last year, but the competition back then was too strong)
* The tempo of the song was like nothing other in this year's contest - a slow ballad instead of modern day pop
* Didn't require any effects - many countries (including mine) relied on special effects
* Portugal had one of the longest droughts in the history of the contest - out of 48 previous attempts they only could manage 6th in 1996
Bottom line - we have to accept the fact that Salvador and Portugal are the winners. They can't be all winners unfortunately, but the big winners were the fans.
Fun trivia fact: None of the Top 3 had a podium prior to this year. As I've mentioned Portugal's best was 6th in '96. Bulgaria's best was 4th last year, while Moldova had 6th in their debut in 2005. So this is first podium for all three countries.

The song 1944 by Jamala, which won last year was mainly in English which excludes it from the non-English list despite having lyrics in Crimean Tatar.

Juryvotes getting more and more ridiculous. Incredibly shitty songs like the Austrian that got 0!!! points from the public votes get bumped into the final for no reason, while fresh songs (like f.e. Moldova) will become less and less because the juries don't like those.
Rethinking, who would send a person like Verka in these days, when the song would have absolutely zero chance to contend from the standpoint of the jury?
Also, looking at the juries vote it looks more and more like a video contest. Have they seen what we saw? How did Austria get almost 100 jury points? How did Sweden went so far? How did Croatia went 4th last in the jury votes? Things that make me re-think about the current system really, even more when they look as nationality-biased as ever...

He isn't even mentally disabled, he has a heart condition. he is a pure musician and wants to make every performance of his song different. He won the contest because he had a beautifully simple song that created real emotions which is more effective than a soul-less performance.

IMO Moldova's song was a rip-off of several popular songs. Like last year when Belgium's song was a complete copycat of Fleur East's Sax

Jury votes were heavily political this year and favouring neighbours. Just drop the jury votes now, this new system has highlighted were the voting for your friends has come from. Tele voting is more of a true reflection and not favouring your friends.

If he has a heart disease, then he won because of his disease. If a good looking guy wins, then it's the looks. If he's from Germany it's politics. If he's gay, well then it's because he's' gay. People stop inventing shit excuses. He won both JURI and TELEVOTE. So most of Europe enjoyed the song but most importantly it's message. He won and that's that. No need to trash him or the beautiful country of Portugal. |

Your points stand except for this one. How exactly did most of Europe understand the message of a song in Portuguese?
I think it was more fun to follow the results when they didn't have a jury vote. Or if they are going to have the results separately, have the national host give the result of the televoting for their country and not the jury's. So basically inverse the way the results are announced. I think it would be more fun to follow the results that way.
