In 3 days on saturday it's time for Primavera, the first monument of the season. Get hyped!
It's been a decade now that Pozzatto won in 2006 and since then no Italian won the race. Is there hope for one of the numerous second tier italian sprinters now that Nibs is not lining up?
Big favourites include 2agan, Gaviria Superstar, former MSR winners Degenstache and Demare. Gold Van Avermaet, Stuvyen, Ulissi, Jalaphilippe and Kwiatek may be your best shot though if you want to see some action before the last kilometer.
2016 | DéMARE Arnaud
2015 | DEGENKOLB John
2014 | KRISTOFF Alexander
2013 | CIOLEK Gerald
2012 | GERRANS Simon
2011 | GOSS Matthew
2010 | FREIRE Oscar
2009 | CAVENDISH Mark
2008 | CANCELLARA Fabian
2007 | FREIRE Oscar
Official (very short) promo is out since yesterday:

In less then a month, Boonen will be retired. Almost surreal. It would be nice if he can win a classic between now and then. If not him, Gaviria would be a deserved winner as well. Can't believe Sagan has never won this race either, it's like it's made for him.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Really hope Gaviria win this but i think Demare will repeat.
For non-sprint win: Kwiatkowski or GVA. |

What's happened to Ben Swift this season? Haven't heard anything of him since TDU.

He was in Paris-Nice, as a helper of Henao

He's on good form but I don't think the MSR is hard enough for him. He's only finished on the podium once in his career before.
He's a good sprinter but there is normally one or two great sprinters at the end to beat him.

Gaviria is favourite for the win I think, him and Demare if it's a sprint I don't see anybody else. If an attack Wellens or Kwiatowski. If it rains definitely Wellens

I know the parcours aren't the most challenging but I think it's super hard for everyone just with the cumulative effect of the distance and then the intensity of the Cipressa and the Poggio to top off 300km and 7 hours in the saddle. It comes down to who has the strength left at the end. Last 4 years great sprinters have made the front group then opened up the sprint only to find they are absolutely empty:
2013 Ciolek > Sagan
2014 Cavendish, Sagan, Colbrelli and Greipel totally fail to feature in the sprint as Cancellara and Swift podium but all miss out to Kristoff
2015 and 2016 has seen larger groups of 20-30 come to the line and, while fast men have won, the likes of Sagan, Bouhani and Colbrelli have failed to podium despite being at the pointy end
Anyway looking forward to finding out how it all pans out this weekend - roll on spring!
