I agree with Riis

Tom has had a perfect winter and is looking very hungry so without injuries, he will be ready for Roubaix. I don't say he's going to be the standout favourite but who would be? There are maybe 10-15 riders who can win roubaix, it's not like 10 years ago, when boonen and cancellara were on another level then the rest.

@ringo: and about Gaviria, it's clear that he has a lot of talent but how can someone who hasn't shown anything in big cobbled classics be named 'the best cobbled rider of Quick step'?
Maybe this year he can show his potential on the cobbles this but it wouldn't surprise me if it takes another year before he rides a top10 or a top5 in Ronde, Roubaix, E3 or Omloop.

and in my opinion, no one rides harder and with more style over the cobbles than tom (maybe vanmarcke ) Wink

I agree with Fons completely.
I still don't think Boonen will win this year though Smile

But you also can't say who has the best chance I guess? Wink
So it's going to be very interesting for sure and he had as good a chance as anyone else Wink

I just don't think you can look beyond Sagan this year. He's never really exceled at Roubaix but he's won other cobbled monuments/prestigious races and he's won prestigious flat races. PR will undoubtedly be a major goal for him this year and he has all the assets to dominate the race for the next few years like Boonen and Cancellara did previously.
Sagan is the biggest favourite then, as you say, there are 10/15 riders who could all win if they are on top form and fortune favours them on the day. Sagan's main problem is that he is that much better then everyone else at them moment, no one will work with him so it'll be him versus those 10/15 riders.

I agree with you for all the other classics. You're right, it will be Sagan against the rest, maybe along with GVA.
But roubaix is just different imo... In roubaix i think sagan's chances are as good as those of boonen, vanmarcke, degenkolb, kristoff, GVA,...
but we'll see what happens Smile

It also depends heavily on the weather. If it rains and is very muddy (Which I think we are all praying for Smile ) all of a sudden riders like Sagan and Stybar will be undoubted favourites.
Roll on April Smile

Boonen was extremely lucky last year, when majority of biggest competitors was either injured (GVA) or held by the crash (Sagan, Cancellara).

Fact that he was not able to beat Hayman says it all...

He can win only with big luck and very good circumstances. He is not even best Quickstep rider for Roubaix at this point. He is just overrated because of the past

Wow, I couldn't disagree with you more there. Of course the crash didn't help, but Boonen had created an impressive gap already. I wouldn't say that without the crash Sagan and Cancellara would've come back for sure.

Haymay was fresh and had a +5 day obviously, but Boonen still managed to beat Stannard, Vanmarcke and Bo Hagen, all top riders in Roubaix as well. And of course Boonen made a mistake in the sprint letting himself get boxed in. But he was really impressive that race.

Contributing to the discussion with important and relevant points as always, Paul.

A far more interesting race will be raced tomorrow on Mallorca tomorrow. Movistar and Valverde are the huge favourites since the field really isn't that strong, now it really starts! Quintana will also race, as will brother Dayer and Amador. Tiesj also did well last year and is a good bet for tomorrow.

The Wellens legend continues!

How many of his victories have come after a hilly day in shit weather, crossing the line alone?

Of his 7 crossing-line wins (not counting GC wins), only final stage of Paris-Nice (in front of Contador), and his stage win in last Giro are in sun weather. The rest, 2x Eneco stages, GP Montreal, Poland stage and today have been in shit weather
