This is why people should have listened when I suggested banning them all after the Olympic RR... |

Watched the whole race live, of course. So here's some thoughts:
What the hell happened to Australia? For having such a strong favorite in Hosking they were invisible. If she wasn't feeling 100% i'd have expected to see one of them at least trying to animate the race. Rowney was a standout in her pace setting but it was ultimately completely wasted
Huge contrast to the Belgians in that aspect. Ok D'Hoore didn't finish it off but the underpowered team at least tried seriously to contribute to a chase. They went too far the other way in trying to support D'Hoore and it seems to have cost Jolien. She'll be back and strong next year though having given this year over to Track.
GB put in an interesting race. Dani King showing her growing ability as a road racer. Team was filled with a number of riders who were only going to be pack-filler and thus they proved to be. No sign of Alice Barnes at all, picking her of Lucy Garner was always going to be mistake. Hannah did ok, but she should have focused more on saving herself for the sprint. Lizzie Deignan doing better than expected for 4th, actually quite a good result fo her all things considered. She need a tougher and more splintered final.
The Dutch wouldn't let that happen. If they'd spent more of the race trying to go for the sprint it would have been better. The switch in tactics was never a good idea as too many efforts had been expended. In the finale they were strong but not dominant and not putting anyone under pressure, just allowing everyone else to get a tow.
I was saying with 4km to go that whoever was in Wilds wheel as she accelerated would win, becase they weren't making it hard enough and Wild doesn't have that great acceleration.
Low and behold Dideriksen was in that wheel and won. That one came almost out of nowhere. She's not a sprinter, much more of a puncher. Although she might consider changing that approach now. Great kick to get around to win, and really from nowhere. It is an excellent result (and only backs up my saying Garner should have been there, they are very similar riders).
Lepisto was my pre-race prediction, so 3rd i'll take. Great ride from her at the end to keep Deignan off Wilds wheel, but then lost it to Dideriksen and that was where she lost the race. If she was on Wilds wheel she'd have won. Certain she'll learn from that and come back super strong next season to bag even more wins.
Others. Italy will be happy with 5th having lost Bronzini only yesterday, they rode a good race. USA will be very dissapointed with 16th. Neben was a good rabbit but they needed to back her up and contest, but got caught napping when the attacks came. No idea what happened to Johanssen in all that, she was right up there then poof gone. Gutierrez pulled that 8th from thin air, hopefully she can build on that into next season and bring Spain more to the spotlight. Numainville should be happy with 9th, Kirchman shouldn't be happy with 14th.
Zabelinskaya having one of the worst days on a bike i've ever seen! Wow did basically everything go wrong for here.

What's even crazier is that Bastianelli in 2007 and Vos in 2006 were even younger.

As someone that basically watches 3 women races per year, is that possibly the reason why there's no U23 WCs but only Juniors and Elites? Looks like female riders fare a lot better than men at the same age.

They combine the U23's into the Elite race's, so in this case it's Double for Dideriksen and U23 ITT for Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (Danes going very well in Doha...)
As to why the U23 is combined into the Elite, errrr.... actually there is no good answer here. Some parts it's to bolster the peloton size (although what a bullsh*t excuse) but mostly the UCI just hvn't separated them for either laziness, fogetfulness or sexism.

Woman's bodies mature at an earlier age than men's.

Not that that is a legitimate reason to not have an U23 WC. Most males have finished their maturation by 21, compared to females which is generally between 18-20. Yep, that's a big difference there.

theres no u23s because
a. the elite peloton needs those riders for numbers
b. theres no money to set up u23 teams and races
it has nothing to do with male-female physical differences
and if you think shes young at 20, she didnt win the danish national road race. that went to a 16 year old |
