Basicly you say that only Sky is responsible for the rise in the British cycling? Then was cycling popular say in Slovakia before Peter Sagan began winning? Or in Poland pre-Majka and Kwiatkowski? Or Russia pre-Katusha?
I've at no point said Sky are exclusively responsible for the rise. But it is an undeniable fact that cycling in Britain would not be in the same position without Team Sky.
Cycling would always exist in Britain in some form. There would always be a domestic scene and there would always be the odd one or two riders at the highest level.
But there is a MASSIVE difference in how cycling existed in Britain Pre-Sky, and how it is absolutely thriving since they came into being. It's no coincidence and there is no comparison.
I don't really get you're point about Sagan etc. Of course cycling will be more popular post Sagan. Why would it be more popular pre Sagan with no Cyclists to bring interest to the sport. Any sport is more popular in a country if someone from that country is successful at it. Was Tennis as popular in Serbia Pre-Djokovic? No.

Non-transfer topic, but it's regarding the rider signings - Italian teams forced their riders to pay to race

Unfortunately cycling isn't a rich sport, especially in Italy where they are struggling to maintain a single WT team. Many of these lower tier teams would simply not exist if they had to pay a full roster of riders a full time salary.

Paying to race isn't limited to Italy, I've heard many a story of riders paying their way onto teams and this isn't just at the lower levels of cycling.

Vermeltfoort to Roompot...
that Swift transfer to TJ is very interesting, though I don't really get it as Lampre has a lot of guys similar to his speed...only if he really wants to become more of a puncheur I would get it, but then they have Ulissi...only thing I believe in is that he fills the hole between Ulissi and Modolo in terms of terrain

Compare that to the UK or Aussie domestic scences where races are pretty stable and get good coverage at a national level. The teams there are fairly stable and the sport overall benefits as a result.
The USA unfortunatley needs a new big name success to reinvigorate the cycling scene there. Because cycling just can't compete in what is a pretty flooded market, certainly when compated to NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, MLB, and 1000000 other sizable and well covered sports.
America just isn't a cycling country. In the history of the sport LeMond is the only great rider to come out of America (Armstrong obviously excluded).
It isn't a case of America's cycling scene being weak at the moment. It's never been strong in comparison to other countries.
A few big teams sprang up on the back of Armstrong because America is a rich country and so will always be able to support wims and fashionable sports. Look at the MLS now. Therefore American appeared to be a big player in cycling for a few years.
Armstrong has gone and American cycling is simply reverting back to it's natural place in the World cycling hierarchy.
Of course big names help to grow a sport, Britain is just the most recent successful example of that. However I reckon that the cycling hype in Britain is actually much more diversied than just Sky, but of course you guys had that debate and I don't want to get into that.
But Armstrong isn't just any rider. He was the biggest star cycling has ever seen and his downfall is also one of any sport's greatest falls of a fraud. The reveal of Armstrong's systemic doping is not comparable to simply "a rider retiring", because the publicity and credibility damage that this has inflicted to cycling is unique to any other sport or sport's tale, especially in the USA where they live for larger than life-narratives. Armstrong was back in the day probably the biggest star next to Michael Jordan in the US.
So american cycling isn't falling back, it has to recover from a crisis that cycling has to deal with in a smaller scope. US scene is just the center of it and got hit the hardest. In that way it's still great to see so many talented guys in conti teams, Adrien Costa the prime example, who love the sport, whilst the US big public and media only has suckers like TVG, Farrar and Cannonfail to root for, not exactly what you consider winner types. It'll just take some years to recover from the whole Armstrong tale and than the US will be back on track imo, but for the US scene to grow they need races & conti teams, as often stated.
I also don't think that cycling has to worry much about NFL & Co. Those are ball games, they should split their shares fine. Cycling is an endurance sport, with the best landscape eyecandy one can have in any sport.. it's more for lovers of nature & sufferfeasts, so it speaks to a pretty different demographic than over the top NFL or fast-paced basketball. The important thing is that a channel provides people with info and coverage of top races, that I don't know who or what is televised.

please stop this rhetoric
he pays your paycheck sure - doesnt mean you support him indefinitely, you are ignorant to think otherwise
e.g. you are employed by Apple, doesnt mean you think tax avoidance is good

Maybe not support, but at least tolerate. When you work for Apple, you can tolerate them being tax avoiders because they pay you. But tax avoidance isn't the same as violating human rights (and no, I don't want to start a discussion about Apple's subcontractors ...).

FFS guys, many of these riders are just trying to put food on the table, it has nothing to do with supporting torture. It's not like the world of cycling is a place where everyone has a contract waiting for them.
I get your criticism of Nibali and some of the bigger riders, but Arashiro and others on that team. is just trying to find a job so they can make a living. |

So Arashiro couldn't of gotten a paycheck at another team? Why is this conversation always about money? Some things are more important than money and surely this is one of them.

Why can't the riders look past $$$? The teams success will help the Prince's PR and is part of a strategy to whitewash the credible allegations of torture, why should this be okay? I don't understand how the riders are given a free pass by some people.

Rihs will only sponsor the team for one more year. All their contracts are for one year.

Because they need money to live on, to eat, drink, stay warm, provide for a family?
For most of the peloton it's only a handful of years at the top at best. And for most of them it's hardly a stellar wage anyway. Trying to get a bit more security is entirely understandable when given the chance. It's nothing new in cycling as riders have chased money for decades. So does most of the human race. And that's way philosophical and slightly off-topic.

Sorry @Dusen. Accidently disliked your post. I agree with you, that the riders are looking for money to feed their families.
