How chauvinistic from ASO - they want this so they can invite their weak local teams like Delko and Fortuneo. UCI need to stop this practice. I want to see a competitive and different PCT teams - not the same old weak French teams.


Those "weak" French teams need those ASO invites to survive, same with the Italian PCT teams and the Giro. ASO and RCS have the right to invite who they want as wild cards as they won the races and I really don't see what the big issue is.
Also the idea to reduce the amount of WT teams in the long term to 16 teams was floated before the ASO dispute when they announced the new plan for the new UCI calendar, teams and team sizes. It's true that the 17 WT teams plan for next season was a deal between the UCI and ASO but it still did fit into the long term plan.

Ask yourself why PCT teams like Colombia Coldeportes folded in the past? Because the team's nationality wasn't French or Italian (Spain has only one PCT team so getting to Vuelta is easy, unless you count the guaranteed invitations to Cofidis). Roompot deserved Giro invitation, because it started in the Netherlands, but instead they invited the doped Southeast, the annonymus Nippo and for whatever reason Gazprom. That's why UCI needs to force ASO and RCS to invite 50% non-French/Italian teams for the Tour and Giro from 2018 (i.e. 3 local and 3 international). And in this way everyone will be happy.

Hehe, to blame uncompetitive italian teams and then mention that UnitedHealthcare and Novo Nordisk stopped applying is pretty ironic really, considering that those two teams are probably the worst of PCT, and they would never deserve to get invited to a major WT race in the first place really.

ONE Pro Cycling is a PCT team for one season, how about they grow a little and not jumpstart ride into major events, especially a GT, which would be hilarious. Imagine Goss in a GT, the forum would be like whaaat? Cycling teams need smart growth, not some gimme-gimme-gimme attitude where a team thinks they can get a GT in their first pct season, this is just unrealistic goals that increase sponsor expectations and will cause backslash when those unrealistic goals are not met.

Would you rather see the irrelevant Cunego? Or Southeast and their doping past? From all invitations only four stood out - Bora-Argon18, Cofidis, Direct Energie and Caja Rural. And those four teams are in La Vuelta. What have Nippo contributed to the Giro? Or Fortuneo to Le Tour? Other than some TV time during boring flat stages, where the only interesting is the mass sprint or fall in the peloton, haven't. When CCC was invited in the Giro back in 2015, I was shocked to see organisers invite international team. But was more surprised at the decision to invite Nippo, who like ONE in 2016 were in their first year as PCT, instead of really competitive Colombia Coldeportes, who in 2014 demolished every Italian team except for Lanpre. I've said it not many times that Vuleta is more merciful when it comes to invitations as they only have 1 active Spanish PCT team even though they want to be Basque

There are lot worse teams than UHC and Novo Nordisk - ActiveJet, Roth and Funvic (does this team exist anyway) say hi. Delko is also weaker than you think.

Am I right in thinking that Fortuneo is Dan McLay's team, as he got a top 3 on a sprint stage which is better than most wildcard teams could do and to me that, along with his other 3 top 10's justifies that selection.

Sepulveda getting a Tour under his belt is likely going to help his development towards being on a WT team in the future, but let's be honest, which PCT riders could actually compete with the WT teams without going in the break?

If there are any riders at that level in PCT they get signed to a WT team when they show that potential, they don't leave it until they actually do challenge.

Nippo basically were in breaks every single stage and had a very respectable line up. Cunego came short of a KOM rankings win. Wilier had Mareczko who could have fought for stage wins but was unlucky, as well as Pozzato.

Nippo would usually reel in every break in the first week and let Cunego do his thing since he couldn't contest the higher mountains. That made for some good racing.

Colombia Coldeportes folded because Corti is an inept manager, it had nothing to do with Giro wildcards. Southeast won the 2015 Coppa Italia which gives you automatic entry into the following years Giro so that's why they were invited (if you want to go down the doped road then I assume you'd say Astana and Katusha shouldn't have been invited right?). Nippo have a former Giro winner in the team and while not winning a stage animated many stages, Gazprom won a stage and were in the breaks so can't see how they did anything wrong. One Pro Cycling are first year PCT and looking at the squad really aren't ready for a GT right now, Roompot deserved an invite because it started in the Netherlands? So it's okay for national bias in this case? As to United Healthcare and Novo Nordisk, if they wanted the invite so badly then why didn't they send teams to compete in the Coppa Italia races in 2015 to try and get an invite? MTN did to try and qualify before they became WT which guaranteed them a start.
As to the French teams well Fortuneo didn't deliver this time around but McClay was good in the sprints and Feillu was active on some of the mountain stages and did finish 5th to Finhaut-Emosson. Bora didn't send a strong team or do much at the race so maybe they should not have got an invite.

If you want to stop GT's handing out wildcards to home nations then thats all good and fine but come up with a financial structure that keeps these teams afloat as they depend on these invites to attract sponsors. Until the UCI can do that then I don't see any problems with RCS and ASO looking after the home teams.

Some good news: Malori is set to make his result in the Canadian classics. Was a horror crash in San Luis, and according to himself it's a miracle he can even race. Hopefully he can find his old level again.

There is no financial system that tries to keep WT teams like IAM to begin with. Even Oleg Tinkov got bored and say what you will about him, but he got point.

Back to the debate for the invitations - my problem is that these teams are not competitive for GC and other than the occasional breakaways in the stages and some Top 15 finish if they stay long enough in the breakaway. In the past a PCT team was capable to make major upset and be competitive at some point - in 2007 Mauricio Soler finished 10th and was KOM in the Tour while riding for Barloworld, a PCT team. Even more recent case - Juan Jose Cobo, then riding for Geox, won the Vuelta in 2011. Thomas Voeckler held the yellow jersey long enough in the 2011 Tour while riding for Europcar.

I have no problem with ASO or RCS inviting local teams, but the lack of competitiveness by some make me question their participation. We all know that Cofidis have ironclad wildcards for Tour or Vuelta. The more fair system would be the best non-WT local team to be granted automtic invitation for the next edition (in this case aoutomatic invitations would receive Gazprom, Bora and likely Caja Rural) another invitations to be sent for the best two/three performing local tems in the Teams continental ranking (the sum of all Continental Circuits). The rest invitations are up to the organisers

Bad news from Colombia - U23 rider Diego Suta has passed away after crashing on the descent of Alto de Daza during the Vuelta de la Juventud for U23 riders. 2016 is really dark year when it comes to fatal accidents compared to the past 2 decades.
