The way I see it...
Contador: He's not in the best position to win, neither is this his best season. But I still remember that Vuelta where he launched an attack 80km. away from the finish line and ended up winning. He's not the kind of rider one would take for granted.
Valverde: This is definetly his most succesful race and so far he seems to be hanging on there pretty well. Tiredness is his biggest enemy though, which leads me to
Froome: Arguably the best GT rider of the moment, he is covered by a team that can virtually control anything. Unless his rivals step up, he remains as the top favourite in my humble, undocumented opinion.
Quintana: No, he is NOT overrated, people... he's just not Marco Pantani. We haven't even reached the real mountain in this Vuelta, so we'll have to be on the lookout for him.
Chaves: Not many people are talking about him, but wait for it. He's a fine climber when it comes about short, steep mountains like those in the Vuelta. And he's Colombian (that's also a plus)
Rubén Fernández: Nobody would have put his name before watching yesterday's stage. Seems to be on top condition, but then again, we'll have to wait for the toughest mountain in this year's Vuelta, which is yet to come.
Joaquim Rodriguez: He's retired.
Contador: Rodriguez was alone vs a very strong team + Tiralongo.
Now it Contador having the weak team and he is 4 years elderly.
Quintana: Very overrated. Are not even the best on his team. Low IQ, bad leadership, bad tactics, bad time trial, bad crosswind, bad descents, bad flat, bad hill and can not perform in mountains where there is most use for it. Sometimes he is good in mountains when it is too late, other times he shit all the time. |

Saxo 2012, a strong team?? Really? How you dare... with Hernandez, Paulinho, Pires, Noval, young Majka, N.Sorensen, Tosatto and Navarro.
He suceed that day because he had 3 + Tiralongo team-mates in the breakaway |

I Think it was a fine stage today.
A strong breakaway with 20 riders gets away, and stick togethers for a long time.
The fight between the riders in front was very exiting, at the last part,
Totally surprise win buy almost unknown rider who has the legs and attacks at the right time.
Would you expect a GC rider to attack in this terrain ? Would be nonsens.
GC teams could still ware out the team to get a proventional lead, but why ?

It's always cagey in the first week as riders weigh each other up and try to ascertain what form everyone is in. Would be pointless going on blind attacks this early in the race.
Expect the favourites to open up a bit in the second week. And riders like Contador to be a bit more active as they have no choice if they want to salvage a top 5/podium place.
Is today classed as a flat stage? If it is then anything could happen. I said at the start there will be lots of wins from breaks in this Vuelta because there isn't a sprinter good enough to make it worthwhile for their team to chase the break. That will make it harder for the red jersey team and may make holding the jersey a poisoned chalice in the first half of the race.
I predict another breakaway win today. |

Maybe they will neutralize final 3 kms due to the crash. |

The gaps were caused by crashes in the last 3 Km, none of them will count.
Kirby keeps talking about how collarbones and bones are more important than teeth. maybe that's true for continuing in the race, but as someone who's broken a front teeth in half from a bike crash, I tend to disagree. Bones heal by themselves. Teeth don't heal. When you break them, it's permanent, any dental fix is in the end artificial. I'd take a broken collarbone over broken teeth any day.
Of course I'm not trying to finish the Vuelta a Espana though.

Wouldn't be surprised if Trek made an appeal against the Meersman victory after that move in the last victory. Not sure if justified or not, but at least I think they could try.
@Luxemburger: Nope, Felline

They shouldn't and it shouldn't be succesfull. But ridiclous decisions like Sunday have made it possible indeed.
