I'm sorry, but Cav is one of the greatest. We are talking about the sprinter with the most stage wins at the Tour. Bullshit if he's not one of the greatest imo

He's one of the greatest sprinters that's for sure but sprinters are easily the 'worst' of cyclists so they shouldn't be coming close in lists of greatest cyclists.

This! What is so impressive on being dragged to last 100 metres and sprint to the line? Smile

Rider that can only win a race from the sprint cant be even seriously considered in discussion about greatest bike riders...

See, I disagree. Cav is a WC and MSR winner.

I think together with Pettachi, Cippolini and Freire they are the 4 sprinters (well, Pettachi and Freire weren't just sprinters of course), and maybe McWeen (winning all those stages alone is incredible) that should be accounted as greats. You can't win that many stages in cycling's biggest race without beeing counted as one of the greats, I'm sorry. It's your opinions, and I respect it. But somehow, I don't think it's the right one.

And please, don't take me as another Arberg. I think sprinting is extremelly difficult, and just because it's only for 100m, doesn't make it less of cycling because of it.

Sprinters are fucking amazing..that drag into 200m mark is not some milkman ride. Speed is also then close 60km/h already last 3 km.
Then you need to produce another kick for over 1000w power..timing it perfectly, being at correct position, monitor rivals, being fucking fearless. This is just crazy ..fast, power show, dangerous, marvellous.
You think it is easy? Quess again.

Nobody thinks its easy, but its EASILY the least spectacular wins and should be judged accordingly. You know what real legends are made off? Gutsy and balsy rides, overwhelming power and endurance. Think Contador 2009 TdF or 2012 Vuelta, think Gilbert in Ardennes and especially L-B-L in 2011, think Cancellara in 2010 RvV and Roubaix, Sagan RvV 2016, Boonen 2012 Roubaix. Victories which are remembered for the extreme amount of domination, shredding of the opposition in the hardest races in the world (monuments and GTs). Long range breaks, an exhibition of greatness.

Those are the riders who should remembered and appreciated the most, REAL bikeriders. I won't remember Cav's WC in 2011 (as a matter of fact, I have forgotten it) like I would with Evans's ride in 2009 or Costa's in 2013. Neither will I remember one out of many of this stage wins in France - they don't stand out.

Gosh this forum has become repetitive and depressive at times.

Btw. Sagan arrived in Rio, drawing the lots of attention. Even if he should finish last in the MTB, it is a great marketing action. Pfft

He is green and making stunts, shouldn't Kermit be Sagan? Pfft

Hmm, that makes sense. Grin

Then it is Sagan escaping with Froome during this years Tour. The basket on the bike is actually very sofisticated wattmeter. Cool

Don't normally watch any bmx or mountain biking so I'm looking forward to watching a bit over the next few days. Who are the favourites I should look out for?

Avin Wargunnson
Dont know about BMX, but in MTB:

Schurter (SWI), Absalon (FR), Kulhavy (CZ - reigning olympic champion) are usually cut above the rest in big events.

Marotte (FR), Fontana (IT), Cink (CZ), Fluckiger (SWI), Vogel (SWI), Fumic (DE), Koretzky (FR) are next candidates for good result i would think, but the course is very special in Rio .- not very technical, pretty wide and sandy, so that can, together with chance of rain bring unpredictable race.

Then there is Sagan, who can pretty much finish anywhere i guess, dont wanna hype him. Pfft

He would normally had enormous disadvantage of starting from last position (standings), but in OG there are only 50 starters, not 100+ like in world cup races, so on the wider course, he can hopefully try to push to the front better...he should also benefir from not so technical course.
I'll be back

Avin Wargunnson
Also Sam Gaze from New Zealand should deserve a mention, as fresh U23 world champion (in front of Koretzky), who is used to racing on southern hemisphere. He can be a dark horse of the race...
I'll be back

Won't be there, either Smile

I heard yesterday two of the big favourites in the women's BMX are Pajon and Buchanan . They qualified in first and second for the semi-finals, but I think BMX is a bit like the snowboard cross in the Winter Olympics - organised chaos where just about anything can happen.
