Only just stumbled across the article on Het Nieuwsblad.

And I hope it's false.

I like Sagan but the whole package deal that includes his entourage....
that's something for some Russian or Sheik who want a flashy plaything to show off and don't care about the money. Not a reputable deal in my eyes. But then again I don't know the marketing strategies of Bora and Hansgrohe.

Oh well...the press conference will start at 13:45. Let's hope for the best.

You sound like those desparate Trek fans wanting to see Sagan replace Cancellara, but that ain't happen. Not by a long shot.

And why not they? If they have big sponsor and Specialized to boost the budget, they can sign Sagan. And mind you the next TdF is staarting in Germany and the publicity effect for an German team having big name draw will be huge

Whats the problem with guys like Baška or Kolář? Both are talented riders, certainly worth a place in WT squad. Juraj is another question, but brother is brother...

I dont like Majka, but he is certainly a world class climber.

And Sagan is biggest superstar of cycling right now, nobody even comes close in terms of marketing value (and sports value is also great, that is obvious).

If I was team manager and could get $agan to sign, I would hire brother, his brother-in-law, his father as a chauffeur and his grandma for cooking if that's what it takes to get his signature.

Cannondale is merging with Drapac... like now.
https://www.cyclin...-for-2017/

I'm starting to get pretty freaking tired of these mergers. I like Drapac, I have nothing against them. But first Cervelo, then Liquigas and now this? Every time we have a new contingent, last time Italian and now Aussie, and every time the amount of American riders there gets smaller and smaller until it will likely be down to like 3 guys. I don't want to sound like I'm judging people on nationalities or something, but Garmin have been the only true American team in the peloton for a while now - BMC is really Swiss and Trek is extremely international. Now it seems like they're losing their focus completely.

I just don't understand why we have to go to merger after fricking merger to just get the team! They don't have the biggest budget, I know. But every time they do a merger they just make that worse, wasting cap space on useless riders coming over through it. SO it doesn't even give them much more money.

Most people hate them anyway so they won't care I guess, but as a fan I'm just getting tired of this. It feels like every 5 seconds they're absorbing a new team and heads up, they KEEP GETTING WORSE! Maybe there's a connection!

Why does it keep happening? Simple answer is Vaughters! I honestly think he's incompetent which is why Slipstream Sports can never secure enough sponsorship $$$ to keep going and why riders keep getting turned over. Vaughters talks a big game but just doesn't deliver and everything he touches gets burnt in the end, the same will happen with this merger

Drapac have some nice riders that could add to the squad.

You can gain another American in Mannion, guys like Jones, Spokes, Earle and Canty could be nice additions as well if they all move across. If not then I could have seen them moving to Orica in the next couple of years.

They might not all be ready for the step up but considering it is meant to be a 5 year partnership they could all have time to develop if given long enough contracts and could replace some of the guys that aren't doing that well.

Reuniting Wippert with the guys that he worked so well with at Drapac is likely going to have a positive effect on him and considering the talented young Aussies that have come from Drapac the last few seasons I think that getting some of the guys behind the scenes, that helped make it a platform that allowed there riders to develop so well, might help some of the existing guys like Moser, Slagter and Formolo kick on and stop underperforming/ recapture that promise they once showed.

Honestly it might not seem ideal but there are definitely some positives in the merger.

1. I like how Sagan looks out for his mechanic, cook, chauffeur, friends 'cuz Tinkoff cloess shop.

2. Really like Sagan. On and off the bike.

3. Trek...meh, waaaaay overpriced those bikes. I'd take a Ribble or Rose over a Trek any day.

They were talking about what? Another 5 or 6 riders around Sagan plus mechanic and staff. That's an amount of new riders for a newfound team. Or if you wanna ruin the structure and team spirit in your current squad, creating a team inside the team.

That Cannondale - Drapac merger seem sudden.
Any of 'em reported serious financial trouble recently?

Not sudden at all, they announced early in the season that they would be joining forces next season to set up a development squad so I assume the actual merger of the teams was on the cards from then. Also just before the Tour is the time to announce new sponsors so to get maximum exposure, Orica announced one yesterday with Bora and Cannondale today

Don't really like that Cannondale - Drapac merge, mostly because Drapac is one of my favourite teams and Cannondale, while I don't dislike them, I don't particularly like them either. Only positive of this is it could give some Aussies such as Canty a chance to do well in the World Tour, we'll see.

Most of the backroom staff at Drapac won't be joining the WT team but will be staying on to run the development team which when you think about it makes sense. Of the riders from Drapac who will move to the WT team for next season I'd say Canty, Mannion, Scully, Clarke and Norris would be it, riders like Jones, Spokes, Phelan might stay at PCT level for another season.

In the end this isn't so much of a merger but more of a takeover which has been the case with every one of Slipstreams "mergers"

Yeah I'm sceptical of it myself and liked the Drapac set up which was getting better over the last few seasons, in the end Micheal Drapac (team owner) wanted more exposure in the U.S for his company which is why we kept seeing Drapac racing in the U.S, getting into bed with Slipstream gives him that platform. It would of also been cheaper merging with Slipstream than trying to build up Drapac into a possible future WT team which they had talked about.

Yeah, because of them Alex Howes can't get his dream come true of riding in breakaway of every big race. Look at that roster without those Cannondale riders, what are you left with, Nathan Brown, Philipp Gaimon, Ben King? Who are those people anyway. It's not that I don't mind this whole "clean team" moniker that Garmin has been representing, but that team lacks in quality over quantity and there's a tendency of their riders underperforming.

What did you expect? It's going to be the same thing Vaughters done before with Cervelo Test Team and Cannondale (the former Liquigas) - taking their sponsorship and acquiring a sloo of riders from the teams while the Slipstream management is the same

Well no. Those guys might be useless but that's not who they were left with. Prior to that merger they had better riders as well. Their team has only gotten worse the last few years and it's not like the riders they've gotten through mergers have worked out to well. They fell out with Hushovd real quick, and if you think about who came over from the Cannondale merger, who has been any more useful than the Americans you mentioned? Formolo still has potential but can't figure out how to last more than a few days. Mohoric left already. Moser will never live up to his Pologne win. Bettiol is still very young but what even is he again, a sprinter? I don't even know cause I've barely even seen him in a breakaway. Villela hasn't done anything. Koren's a fine domestique I suppose, but who the hell even is Marangoni? The guy is 31 years old, can't do anything for crap and even if he gets in a breakaway, he can't win from it. You're telling me that guy isn't a waste?

Honestly, none of those guys have done better besides maybe Moser than any of the Americans you mentioned. Gaimon's been crap, but Howes does place highly in lower level races and gets into a lot of breaks. You may say that's useless but it's better than doing absolutely nothing! Nathan Brown is also a decent climber and is still very young, and Ben King isn't great either but can climb enough to get in breaks. Again, these guys are pretty useless but that doesn't justify bringing even more useless riders in.

Call me racist or whatever, but I'd rather have crap Americans than crap other riders on the team, because they started as a more developmental team for Americans in the first place.

Should have started with that.

The problem is that without those "useless" riders you just don't have a ProTour level team. USA just isn't big enough cycling country to have a PT team made mostly out of their own riders development team or not, especially when there are two other semi US teams.
Also fact that Formolo, Moser and rest of the talented guys haven't been able to show their potential is more due to Garmin itself.
Also you should be happy that they're are bringing Drapac to the table as that means more Anglo riders rather than Italians.

Riis123
I don't think there's anything wrong with wishing that the team keeps its american identity. Its just how he feels, doesn't deserve the flak at all IMO. I would also be sad to see Movistar suddenly merge with teams like Bora or Jumbo and bring shitty dutchies etc

I don't understand why anyone cares about what nationality a rider is or what country a team is from, why does it matter?
