Island Runners | Monthly Review (August 2016)
AbhishekLFC
I agree with Ian regarding uncovering related stats for the riders. It would definitely help understand what kind of training to provide them, and what hidden talents they have. Given that they are mostly very young, they'll have a long development curve, and getting that right is important.

Totally agree with you guys, great idea!

Assistant Hired, Bonjour from France!

After sorting through the thousands of resumes... OK, more like five. We have decided on hiring Corey Reinhold to be the Assistant Director of Operations.

Reinhold, 24, is an ambitious go-getter from the Bahamas. He is very knowledgeable in cycling and connected well with our cyclists. Plus, his referral from jandal7 didn't hurt either.

jandal7 wrote:
I met a guy whilst holidaying in the Bahamas, we ended up going to the pub a few times. A little over-enthusiastic but had a lot of potential and ambition. Reminded me of the young mayor from Back to the Future. I knew he had a good heart and some potential in business. We stayed in touch and he's just become unemployed after the business where he was a head of department shut down. He's 24 and a bit of a cycling nerd. Naturally we got along well. I wonder if he'd be interested? He's ambitious and would have the right mentality to help you take the project forward well.

Reinhold was put to work right away as I and three cyclists are now in France for the next couple of days touring the Tour de France.

Yesterday, the cyclists got to train on the new ProForm stationary bikes and loved them so much that the company said we could work out a deal to buy some for our training facility at a reduced price.

The offer: For $1,000 we could get five bikes to bring back to Jamaica, and doing so will help our cyclists develop better secondary stats. Each cyclists will see their Stamina, Resistance and Recovery stat limits be raised by two attributes.

For reference, the current budget can be found in the last monthly report. Plus, Reinhold is being paid $100 per month for his services. Also, I have an interesting revenue generating option to share in the next couple of hours as well.

Should we get the stationary bikes? Most votes in 12 hours is what we will do.

Note: All votes will be counted, not just members.

Good Idea = Yes | Thumbs Down = No

I am disappointed that my offer to help was ignored. However, you will not be able to avoid my advice:

Let's not get those stationary bikes. We have bikes that can move, and our guys drive in a warm country and train a lot. Plus, we haven't got infinite money.

It wasn't ignored, it was deliberately rejected. Sending in a resume that just says "Pick Me" in large font wasn't enough. Thanks for the offer though and we always appreciate your advice as a founding member.

Tourist Trap, Bike Tours!

Sponsorship opportunities have dried up since the team jersey was finalized, but I did stumbled into another potential revenue generating stream: island bike tours.

This idea came from a cruise line company that uses Jamaica as a port of call and, before I knew it, a whole host of cruise lines were making the same pitch.

At first I was skeptical of the idea, we are trying to become a professional team not a tourist attraction. But, the more I thought about it and the more money that was being put on the table, I had to at least bring this to the member's attention.

Here are the current offers on the table.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Bio: Carnival is 1 of 9 cruise ship brands owned by Carnival Corporation & plc. The company has the largest fleet in the group, with 25 vessels currently in operation that account for 21.1% of the worldwide market share. (via Wikipedia)

Bike Tours Operating Costs$2,500
Profit Cut of Sales to Carnival54%
Profit per Customer$1,450

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines

Bio: Royal Caribbean is owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. As of October 2015, the line operated 23 ships, had three additional ships on order, and controlled 17 percent of the cruise market worldwide. All ships under the Royal Caribbean have names ending with "of the Seas" (i.e. Liberty of the Seas) a practice which began in 1991. (via Wikipedia)

Bike Tours Operating Costs$5,000
Profit Cut of Sales to Royal Caribbean62%
Profit per Customer$2,250

Norwegian Cruise Lines

Bio: Norwegian is best known for its Freestyle Cruising, which means that there are no set times or seating arrangements for meals, nor is formal attire required. This has been copied and implemented by their competitors. They have roughly 8% of the total worldwide share of the cruise market. (via Wikipedia)

Bike Tour Operating Costs$7,500
Profit Cut of Sales to Norwegian68%
Profit per Customer$3,250

This seems a little confusing at first, so let me breakdown the situation the best I can because there is a lot of money on the table here. There are four variables:

1) Operating Costs: A fixed amount we have to pay to keep the tourist attraction running. This covers employees, insurance, bike maintenance, etc.

2) Customers: Aka the tourists. This is determined by the community. In the peak travel months of May, June, July and August. A post will go up for 24 hours about signing up for bike tours. Every Thumbs Up on that post equals a customer.

3) Profit per Customer: The amount of money earned for each Thumbs Up.

4) Profit Cut of Sales: However much we make in sales from the customers the cruise lines will take a certain percentage for themselves out of that amount.

So, for example, here is a brief overview of the money we would make if we were to get 5, 10, 15 or 20 customers under the guidelines set by each company.

Company5101520
Carnival$835 $4,170 $7,505 $10,840
Royal Caribbean-$725$3,550 $7,825 $12,100
Norwegian-$2,300$2,900 $8,100 $13,300

Also, all three companies have expressed interested in becoming the main sponsorship for the 2018 season if selected for this partnership.

I've also included the option to deny all the offers in the hopes of maybe saving up enough money to do this without a partnership (but that's probably year's away) or we forget about this altogether.

The more I think about it, the more this seems like a solid way to bring in money quickly and potentially having a well-known main sponsor in 2018. This is a big decision and I'm leaving it up to the members.

And don't forget about the ProForm bike offer going on at the moment as well.

Most votes in the next 48 hours will be the option we go with.

Note: Only member's votes will be counted.

Thanks = Carnival
Za(r)bel'd = Royal Caribbean
Good Idea = Norwegian
Thumbs Up = Deny Offers

Ties? Ties!

Well, I wasn't expecting this. Both of voting items I put out recently ended in ties.

First, the option to buy ProForm bikes and then the company to do bike tours with.

So, what to do? This is uncharted territory. Well, if a decision can't be decided on by the voters then I have to take charge and make the decisions for the team.

Therefore, I have (a) decided to forgo buying the stationary bikes - I think we can find better ways to improve the team and $1,000 is a bit much. And (b) signed on to do bike tours with Carnival. They are a brand I trust and I like this being more of a low risk, low reward type of income generator.

That's all for now. France has been wonderful and we are heading back home in a couple of days. Then it's back to the grind of hard training in the Jamaica heat.

Training and Internal Scouting!

We've made it safely back home from France. That was a once in a lifetime experience and the racing wasn't too bad either. Alberto Contador took home his third TdF crown beating Chris Froome by a mere 25 seconds.

Quite refreshing to see Froome get beat and by such a narrow margin.

Now that we are back and the cyclists are buzzing after a thrilling Tour, it's time for the community to make their monthly impact again here in June.

For reference, the current squad:

I also propose something to the community: next time there's a chance at extra stats, maybe it'd be nice to make a few agreements?

For example: it'd be interesting to develop Zak Evelyn's sprint stat and potential. Or rather, his flat stat, which will hold him back in every race! So we should get on that asap!

Amory and his hill stat seems very promising, too, but given his age I suspect his back-up stats will be low, so we should know these so we know what we have to work on.

Bastian Rollins seems like our future climber/stage racer, so we should continue to develop him, too. We don't know much about him yet, either, so revealing some more stats would be helpful as well.

Ronda is only 14 but flat already at 69, so he can play a vital role in a future lead-out, might be wise to keep that open, too.

Those are just some observations from me. What do you think?

Hope someone thinks about Ronda, Amory and Evelyn now!

End of Month Review: July 2016

One month closer to our first professional races in the CT. September can't come soon enough. The countdown is on. But, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let's recap what happen last month in July.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Island%20Runners/Banners/6834df9d-16a1-467d-8a17-5c5ab8fccccd_zpscqxewfov.jpg

Going to the Tour

From one tweet and to watching Froome and Contador battle it out in the Alps. Crazy. Bastian Rollins, Oneil Samuels and August Charvis enjoyed every minute of it. Hopefully one day we won't be just watching it, we'll be in it.

Bike Tours

We have signed a deal with Carnival Cruise Lines to run bike tours starting next year around the island of Jamaica during the months of May, June, July and August. It should bring in some extra revenue and it's good for the community.

Fully Healthy

The injury front was been kind to us so far. Ajay Quashie has made a full recovery after dislocating his elbow, which will cost us $350 in medical costs. But, the squad is at full strength now. How long that will last is the real question.

Progressively improving. But, overall, not much to report. It's a shame the members didn't step up in July to complete all the training tasks.

As a result, I think I'm going to allow more members to join if they want.

Recommended by the new Assistant Director of Operations Corey Reinhold.

"Vincent really stepped up his training regiment and buckled down after getting in trouble last month for drinking at local bar with under aged Emeterio Amory. Glad to see he is taking this seriously now and his turn around is starting to rub off on the other cyclists."

Not quite sure what to expect this month. All I got written down is to make sure this team is ready for the East Bohemia Tour and Chrono Champenois in early September. Got to make sure we pick the right cyclists to represent us.

Career Change? Poaching Our Youngster!

Well, I just came out of meeting with Tajo Sylvester and he informed me that he has received an offer to join the Los Angeles Galaxy youth academy.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/70/Los_Angeles_Galaxy_logo.svg/236px-Los_Angeles_Galaxy_logo.svg.png

Bio: As part of its development program, the Galaxy operates an academy system with U-18 and U-16 teams competing in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, and U-14 and U-12 teams competing in Southern California Developmental Soccer Leagues (SCDSL).[64] Six academy graduates are currently signed to the first team: Jack McBean, Oscar Sorto, Jose Villarreal, Gyasi Zardes, Raul Mendiola and Bradford Jamieson IV. (via Wikipedia)

There was no secret that soccer clubs and academies were interested in his talents, but this development is hard to take regardless.

Sylvester really wants to stay with the Island Runners, but the offer to go train with the LA Galaxy youth academy in its U-16 squad is, well, too hard to pass up. I don't blame him, but we do have a couple of options to at least consider.

Plan A: Let him leave. Say farewell and wish him well in America.

Plan B: Pay him a $175 per month salary. This should convince him to stay, but there is a viable risk that other cyclists could start to demand wages as well.

Most votes in the next 24 hours is what we will do. Glad I have you guys to make the tough decisions for me because honestly I don't know what to do.

Note: Only member's votes will count. Not a member?

Summer sport vs Winter sport, why can't he do both Pfft

being the founding member from the BVI that discovered him I think it's going to be easy to guess what I want us to do, besides the kid must have some talent and natural fitness for the LA Galaxy to want him to switch sports, especially for such a reputable club to come after him.

Nice try, but the U.S. soccer calendar clashes heavily with the cycling season. So, sadly, it's not a possibility for Sylvester to do both even though that would be ideal.
