Who will be the next new Grand Tour champion and when?

I don't see any exceptional GT-talent right now who is up-and-coming, like fx. Andy, Contador or Quintana, so I think the likes of Aru, Pinot, Chaves and Quintana (probably forgot a few) from that insane generation are gonna dominate from 2017 and forward.
The exception would be Jungels. I've been on the bandwagon since his Tour 2015 and been pretty vocal here about his GT-talents and thankfully, he went after it this year. I personally think he ceiling is quite a big higher than Dumoulin's. |

I agree about Jungels. Has been around a while so he has experience even though he is quite young and still has a quite a bit of time and room to improve his climbing. For Dumoulin, I feel like even though he can hold his own on climbs, his ceiling on that attribute has pretty much stabilized. When the big GC guys are in form, he'll have trouble holding onto the GC of a GT once the attacks start to get serious. Jungels, on the other hand, has shown some adaptive recovering and has more room to improve.

Maybe it's a bit too early for some 20 to 23 year olds still. Jungels has really caused some justified fuss and looks like a huge GT prospect now so that's at least one for them. Also recently Sam Oomen did some great climbing (20 years old) at Criterium International. Ciccone did a nice Giro But yes the recent neo-pros havn't quite been so outstanding as the classes of Pinot, Quintana, Bardet; maybe it's because they not only have to ride against the established veterans but also against such a strong, still young set-up of 25-27 year olds.

Because then he'd just be a member of the sky train. He's not good enough to be a leader in any race yet, and I don't see how he could in the next 2 years with all the climbers sky has in their roster already.

The Sky training method isn't the greatest when looking at riders overall health, they stick to a script that seems to train fragility into riders health wise, it works for some but fails for others with bad days becoming really bad days. They can barely get Froome through a 3 week race in one piece and that guy is a science experiment
But if we are judging success purely on big wins which I'll concede most do then yes Carthy to Sky would be a logical step, I actually agree with Riis that he'll end up at Movistar as he seems to be happy riding with a Spanish squad
