Yeah, when the sprinters don't show up apart form the usual Italian suspects, there is really no point - it was meant to encourage them to stay.
But its a transitional stage anyways, the Giro always has this odd flat stage in the final week.
Ulissi is in such great form this Giro. Up there once again today. Very aggressive once again in a mountain stage. Would really deserve the points competition. Pinerolo i've already written his name down for that one, no one's beating him there.
It was obvious Dombrowski got dropped, he didn't get orders to fall back. That would be the most stupid move ever and no DS would make a rider do that.

You can't complain about adding a sprint stage when there are no sprinters left, it's not RCS who sent them all home early. The dedicated sprinter should hang on over the mountains to take any remaining opportunity in his hunt for Red.... shame the sprinters all seemed to have designs elsewhere this year and used the Giro as training...
It's a shame the Giro Red jersey doesn't seem to have any pulling power, but then outside of Le Tour none of the secondary jerseys seem to matter that much...

I was replying to bbl and trying to explain it. Surely, its a bit of anticlimactic for many cycling fans.
You obviously can't have 7 GC days in a row, so its good to get a break. As I said, the Giro always does that - unofficial rest day before the last days for transitional purposes. All I say is it is a shame that only Nizzolo and Modolo will show up - they have 2 opportunities in the last week. I remember when Cavendish won the jersey in 2013, it seems those days are over.

I don't see why its a shame Nizzolo and Modolo are the 2 best sprinters left, they are good 2nd tier sprinters and if either of them win the red jersey then they are just as worthy a winner as Cavendish was in 2013, also if it does come down to a bunch sprint then it will still be exciting, the same if a break hangs on.

This is what keeps the Italian sprinters plugging away - come week 3 when the A list have gone home they have half a chance!
Will be interesting to see how much Lampre and the depleted Trek will/can commit because otherwise a break stands a good chance alright.

This is what keeps the Italian sprinters plugging away - come week 3 when the A list have gone home they have half a chance!

All depends what teams get out in the break, Dimention Data and Giant also have a sprinter left so if they don't get a rider in the break they might work

You dont think its a shame that Kittel, Greipel, Ewan, Hofland, Demare etc. all abandoned despite there being 2 sprint stages in the last week? I do, I really don't applaud riders for abandoning, even tho its probably the smartest thing
