Sipping a cold beer and watching the waves crash against the shore.
My moment of bliss was abruptly interrupted by a native informing me I was going to be left on this godforsaken island if I didn't leave right now.
The cruise ship was preparing to leave port and I was too drunk to see straight.
“Sir, get in. I’ll bring you back,” said the young man mounting his bicycle equipped with a passenger cart for tourists like myself. “It’s not too late, I go very quickly.”
I stumbled into the cart and the race was on. He didn’t lie, he was fast or maybe that was the alcohol that morphed him into the next Mark Cavendish.
Regardless, we would have made it. But, a blown tire derailed the mission.
On a sketchy side street in Jamaica, I saw my vacation float away.
A week later and I’m still here...
The strangest ideas come when you’re delusional and desperate. While most end up making no sense like trying to chase down a cruise ship by bike instead of taxi, there also comes sparks of untapped imagination.
A cycling program based in the Caribbean. Call me crazy, but the chips have already been laid on the table and the roulette wheel we call life is now spinning.
Who wants to gamble with me?

This is a combination of a team story and an interactive community forum game.
Your decision will help me in hopefully building a cycling team from the ground up in Jamaica and nurture talent from other surrounding tropical islands.
Opportunities to influence the team will be ongoing. Finances will be critical, scouting must be done carefully and cyclist’s development is paramount.
Mismanage the budget and the program will be forced to shutdown due to lack of funds. Find the next cycling superstar and perhaps the Pro Tour awaits.
The possibilities are truly endless.

Founded with the hope of finding cycling talent from island nations that have been overlooked, Island Runners is a long-term investment and ambitious project that will hopefully thrive with assistance from the PCM.Daily community.
Why island nations you might ask? Well, I noticed after getting left behind on my cruise that the hilly terrain and scorching temperatures here are perfect for molding the next breed of cycling talent. Plus, I can't complain about having a team hub in a vacation hot spot.
Island Runners begins as a non-sponsored, brand new amateur cycling team.
Therefore, the focus of the program is on developing native cyclists, so we will only employ riders we believe can proudly represent their respective island from the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico region.
Success is not guaranteed, but with your help anything is possible.

I’m anything but your typical rich white guy owner. I’m the new kid on the block that's looking to make a living in a sport I love.
But, most of you already know me. I’ve been a regular on PCM.Daily for a number of years. While I’m still the creative story teller, game host and video game playing nerd, I’ve grown up in the past few years.
I’ve just graduated college with a major in sports journalism and I’m stepping out into the real-world. It’s time to put the beer down and put my money where my mouth and heart is.
I've made an initial investment of $10,000 to get the program running.

Take the pledge and support the cause. The more backers Island Runners can attract the more stability for a bright future.
As a founding member you donate (a fictional) $100 to help get the program up and running. Your donation will be split 50/50 with half of the proceeds going to the general fund while the rest will be used to help recruit cyclists from an island nation of your choice.
Founding members will also receive special benefits throughout our inaugural season. Including by not limited to: Q&A sessions with the team, exclusive insider information and more influence in some management decisions.
To sign up, simply comment below with an island nation that you would like us to scout with your (free) donation. The same nation can be picked multiple times, and doing so increases the chances of finding a talented cyclist in the region.
Don't worry about Jamaica, I'm already deeply scouting the home nation.

I'd like to support the team, given Guatemala's not a valid option (?), I'd like to find Anguilla's next talents.
Spoiler This looks great by the way

Scouting is well underway and our first founding member, Waghlon, gave us a quality tip to give the island of Saint Lucia a look through.
It didn't take long before we found someone we liked and he was willing to sign on an unpaid amateur contract. Please welcome to program our first signing:
Henry Manuel | Age 16 | Sprinter | Wage: $0
Bio: Manuel is charismatic and energetic person. He hasn't been cycling for very long, but with his personality and the right training we like his potential.
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FT | DH | PL | 65 | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | 62 | ? | ? | ? |
We haven't had any luck in Martinique yet, and have begun looking into Anguilla since Guatamala is too mainland. Will report back when we have more news.
Also, an update on a few Jamaican cyclists coming soon.
In the meantime, consider being a founder member if you are new around here.

Don't know if this is allowed but I have many good contacts in Cuba, and I personally know of some mighty fine talent coming our way from the Cuban people! |

Given I'm a huge expert on cyclists from island nations, Micronesia in particular I'd like to donate some of my money. Now, Micronesia is quite a long way from Jamaica, and to encourage more local talent Montserrat shall be the island on which I'd like to see the team making investments in youth scouting and recruiting.

We have another cyclist onboard, much thanks to the tip provided by trekbmc.

Signing number two, and again on an unpaid contact. I'll always consolidate the members if a cyclist demands a wage and we'll then decide if it's worth it.
Mendo Celestine | Age 20 | TT Specialist | Wage: $0
Bio: Celestine is a no talk, all action sort of guy. A true professional that is never late and never complains. A silent leader and a perfect role-model.
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FT | DH | PL | ? | ? | ? | 67 | 61 | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? |
Flyers and emails have been now sent to Cuba, Barbados and Montserrat. I'm currently still stuck looking in Martinique and I'm also finalizing paperwork with some local Jamaicans.
But, please, keep the requests coming. The more founding members the better.

Sorry, Hawaii is little too far away to scout. I'll gladly accept your donation to look at any of the islands in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico though.

Given my sister in law's family is from Tobago, it is not hard to tap into this islands resources to find a talent or two.
There is much need on this island for a man who can discretely deliver packages and that sort of thing. I am positive there is no problems grabbing at least one of the island runners to join such a team.

St. Vincent please, I was told the rivalry between the Vincentians and the Grenadines is particularly useful in order to establish a competitive spirit with the cyclists.

Haiti may be poor, but it seems like some people have discovered the bike in order to escape the horrors of common daily life. Maybe one is able to take a step up.

While homegrown talent is flocking to this new cycling team, many are walking away when I tell them we can't pay them for their services. So, I think the best way to attract some local talent is if we sign a prominent figure in the community.
Here are three cyclists I'm suggestion we sign on a fee.
Oneil Samuels | Age 33 | Local Legend | Wage: $200/month
Bio: Current Jamaica RR Champion. Well past his prime, but a very popular figure in the community.
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FT | DH | PL | 65 | 64 | 68 | 62 | 68 | 68 | 69 | 55 | 65 | 62 | 70 | 69 | 61 |
Peter Thompson | Age 29 | Veteran | Wage: $200/month
Bio: Current Jamaica TT Champion. Not as well known as Samuels, but a highly respected member of the Jamaican Cycling Federation.
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FT | DH | PL | 67 | 59 | 63 | 69 | 66 | 65 | 64 | 55 | 60 | 63 | 67 | 65 | 70 |
Thailer Hill | Age 23 | Track Guru | Wage: $200/month
Bio: Member of Portland Cycling Club, excels on the track. His popularity is on the rise, but most Jamaicans aren't knowledgeable on track cycling.
FL | MO | HI | TT | STA | RES | REC | COB | SP | ACC | FT | DH | PL | 69 | 56 | 60 | 66 | 68 | 65 | 66 | 57 | 68 | 70 | 62 | 61 | 67 |
The cyclist with the most votes on this post in the next 4 hours will be signed.
Note: Only founding members votes will count.
Thanks button = Samuels
Good Idea = Thompson
Thumbs up = Hill
Thumbs down = Sign Nobody
Scouting continues to be ongoing in the islands everyone has suggested so far!
