Yep yep! I said it. First thing that sprung to mind after he didnt go to Romandie. Don Alejandro has had great influences.

https://www.marca.com/ciclismo/2016/04...b461a.html

Ronca + Ruben Fernandez in -> Dowsett and J. Moreno out. Super pleased with that, look like a rather strong team now. Should give Astana a run for their money!

Apparently Bentacur also doing Asturias, Movistar is taking no chances ahead of the Giro.

He and Ion will also have possibility to lead in June with Suisse and Dauphine up for grabs, most probably if Quintana sticks to his prep

Haha. "Keep him occupied so he doesn't get heavy again before the Giro Grin"

More or less the plan, yes. Cant fault them....

Teams are getting confirmed atm. Roche gets the Giro, but he isn't the climber he used to, he is much more of an all-round guy now it seems. Sky's team still looks like the worst of Movi, Astana and Sky.

Still hoping for the Fernandez-confirmation instead of J. Moreno. He needs to show something, soon.

Trek looks like a really good squad, very balanced, but question is how much Hesjedal has left.

Cannondale comes with a super strong team to support Uran. I have a feeling that Uran will be very, very good in this upcoming Giro. For some reason.

Read somewhere that Gilbert wasn't ready, still. A big blow on a otherwise interesting stage hunting team.

And what about Wellens - is he GC material? You never know. Hansen obviously is in again.

Kudus have been going very well this year. I really hope to see him doing well. To early for any GC-plans probably, but this kid is a very good climber. Anton is there as well, but... yeah.

All about the Tour for FDJ, rightfully so. Only Demare of interest. All the other climbers will surround Pinot.

Also looking forward to seeing Verona. I have a Spanish friend who knows him and has told be a lot of good things about him, hopefully he will do well on a couple of stages. Generally, strong EQS team overall

ML: It’s better when the Giro starts off directly in Italy and we don’t have to deal with that kind of terrain that’s so different to Italy. But at the same time, there’s all sorts of different interests at stake here and you have to respect that.

I love Mikel, Aupa!!

Seems like Gilbert isn't doing the Giro after all, disappointing given his performance last year but I think he's still recovering from injury; I've updated the OP accordingly. However, Cancellara is confirmed to participate; I had been sceptical of his appearance on provisional startlists but it looks like he's all set for his first Giro in 7 years and with a high probability of getting the Maglia Rosa for at least a couple of days too.

Yeah, unfortunately so, I like watching Gilbert race, he is old school. All the best classics riders/stagehunters won't be here apart from Cance which is a little bit of a blow, but we have a far superior GC-field compared to last year. That top-10 was probably the most mediocre I can remember apart from the podium which obviously was spitzen. Amador, Geniez, Trofimov... oh please. Pfft

It is a pity that some of the classic guys aren't racing this as there are plenty of stages that scream classics style racing but we do have some 2nd tier riders who could find some form over the 3 weeks and then we have the italians who will put on a show, also we have a pretty strong sprint field.
Last years GC wasn't that mediocre with Hesjedal and König solid top 10 riders, to me the only rider who looked out of place was Amador, but yeah I agree this years GC field does look stronger and to be honest not having a big favourite like Contador, Quintana or Froome here makes this GC battle look all the more exciting.

You may have a point, but can you point to a top-10 more mediocre than that in recent years? TdF 2014 springs to mind, but then again, you have people like Valverde and Tejay outside the podium.

Really is hard to compare the GT's as form and luck really do play apart so looking at names alone is unfair, also top 10'in GT's always have a few big names then drop away pretty quickly but I do agree it was a soft top 10 last year

So it is Dowsett out and Betancur in. Had hoped to see Fernandez instead of J. Moreno, but hopefully he will do go in Dauphine/Suisse then and get a selection for the Vuelta. Smile

They have a strong rouleur team, but lacks people for the high mountains. Betancur, Visconti and Amador are very good riders, but they are better at hilly and demanding terrain.

Disappointed by the lack of hype for the second best race in the World. Where are you?!

Hippie!

I like Mont-Sant-Michel - Paris better.

Seems like Sky have removed the Henao brothers from their provisional startlist, good choice, especially since Sergio has data concerns and Sebastián isn't a great climber for the mountains in general. They need to bring in Nieve and either Poels or König, preferably König in my opinion, because Nieve and König are both proven as good Plan Bs, whereas Poels we have no idea about how he rides for top GC places even though he is a great teammate to have, though maybe in terms of level of support he would be better than König; ultimately, Sky should add Nieve and Poels/König to their Giro Starlist, create a strong team.

Hoping Hesjedal can do something here. I think he'll do something. problem is it always seems to take him until the second or third week to get into form, because he doesn't seem to try in a single goddamn race until the Giro every year. Maybe he should try that. Or maybe he doesn't really care anymore since he already has his Giro win.

I think they are hopping that Henao is free to ride at the TDF, so they switch Henao with Nieve. Wonder who the last rider will be, because if they bring another big domestique like Poels, Froome is suddenly standing a lot weaker for the TDF.

Anyway as it stands, with a Nieve not in absolute top shape, and a Roche who has seen better days in the big mountains, I still think it's a rather weak team, will have to wait and see who the last guy is.

SKY:

Landa
Roche
Nieve
Boswell
Deignan
Henao
Lopez
Knees
Viviani

Nieve again in the Giro after a late call, I can only applaud that. This team doesnt look that bad now considering Roche's form and Nieve, but its funny that you have 5 pure climbers considering the more rouleur/mid mountain stages route. As an Euskaltel-fan, Ill hope to see a very good Nieve going good stuff for Landa in the high mountains

Nieve is now confirmed for the Giro

Will be difficult for him to be in top form though, considering he hasn't been working towards the Giro all year like the majority of others at the race. Should be a good mountain domestique for Landa.
