Well, Peter K is definitely a complete douchebag, but isn't he right - I mean, not too many care about women cycling? The last tweet is ugly, but I dont think you can fault him for speaking the truth (more or less) in that first tweet of his.

Women cycling can`t improve popularity if any attempt to make it more popular is being stopped beforehand.

Hence attempts to make it more popular should be supported and not blamed.

I agree, but PK's tweets doesnt have anything to do with whether the popularity will increase. He is simply just stating how things are in a less than flattering way, I don't think there is a reason to go completely PC/sexism here

SKY is connected to british cycling for 8 years, ofc it's only fair to question the lack of their interest in building a women team during this entire time.. especially given the great success british ladies have earned in past few years in the colours of the national team kit, sponsored by SKY (but let's not get carried away, that's because of the men..). To throw around the biggest budget ever in cycling at the men's feet but leave british women to scramble over team contracts, just openly shows the deep layers of inequality between genders and in cycling.

That Kennaugh makes such statements in the eve of the open adressment of Sutton's sexism and paralympics insults meanwhile just shows Kennaugh's egoistical, sexist, narrowminded view on the world.

I'm not a women's cycling fan or anything but Lizzie Armitstead did more in the last 7-8 months than Kennaugh will do for his entire career despite marginal gains.

Disagree.

It shows PK's lack of intelligence, especially in the wake of all this mess, , but tell me where his first tweet is wrong? He doesnt have any kind of influence, merely just stating how things are in cycling. Men's racing >>>>> women's racing.

Again, criticise him for being enormously stupid and a douchebag (his second tweet), but I can't see why you would throw sexism in the mix based on his first tweet.

We are talking about the longterm lack of interest of SKY. This is not about Pooley wanting some team out of nowhere and wanting to be fed by SKY.

It has to do about the general commitment of SKY and their message. They wanted to be british cycling in the last 8 years but in fact they basically excluded a large part of british cyclists, them being women. We now get to understand why this has happened: Because british structures are basically treating women cycling as third-tier product, instead of actively pushing and wanting to develop it.

When you are an athlete inside a cycling organisation which basically sees you as not being worthy of the time because they have two Tour champs and Pete freaking Kennaugh, than this is a huge problem. The lack of the team funding is not the cause of upset. It's the symptom.

It's acceptable for a company not to be interested in women cycling, men cycling is where the big screentime is. It's hypocritical however when said company wants to be synonymous with british cycling and has its logo on the national kit. Another rider has said that she got kicked out (or something like that) on singletrack cuz she isn't sky-material.

Shonak, I agree with that. I just disagreed since I think everyone was fast to condemn PK as a sexist, based on that first tweet. I know this isn't a popular stance I am taking, but I think its unfortunate to condemn PK merely for being stupid and I think we should tread very carefully and stop throwing sexism out left and right. Its still a problem, sure, but it has gotten a lot better in the past and still will. There are some rotten apples out there, like Sutton, but we should be very careful proclaiming x y c a sexist. I mean that in general. It has the potential to ruin lives.

Anyways, what I am trying to say.... Peter Kennaugh is a hot tempered idiot, but not a sexist, merely for stating how things are. Its business, €€€€. Women cycling doesnt attract anywhere near as much attention - it probably could, not in the near future obviously which he simply stated rather unflattering in his first tweet. His second tweet was a more serious case, but again, he is just not very intelligent and has a temper which I don't think anyone can eclipse in the peloton

Political correctness will kill the world one day.

Kenaugh is an idiot, but he is spot on in both tweets here, not just first one. SKY can do what they want btw. they are a private company, no one can dictate them what they should do with their money.

Only few people care about women cycling and those dont bring enough money to atract lot of companies to invest in it, get over it. If you want, go watch it and dont cry about it whole days.

PC indeed is something to be very vary off. It has the potential, as I said, to ruin many, many lives. Particular that of men.

I think his second tweet was over the top, but nothing else.

Yeah, it was not sensitive to say that maybe, so what, we have democracy, we can say what we want and it is not like he is calling her names or something. He just said the painful thruth and that hurts, yeah.

Nothing sexist in that, he would say that to man like he does to that woman, that is actually equal oportunity.

Womens Cycling, my time to shine Cool

Ok so Shane Sutton f*cked up in oh so many ways. Varnish, Cooke, Pendleton and Pooley all comeing out to support each other against him. Then Sutton caught calling para-cyclists "woblies" and "gimps". The dude really screwed the pooch.

Pooley then wrote a good piece for The Guardian (just find her twitter to get a link) detailing her views on Womens Cycling's issues (and not for the first time). A lot of this is questioning British Cyclings attitude a practicies around un-equal support between Mens and Womens Cycling.
For example in 2011 giving all the reserve Mens WC RR team those Mclaren bikes (yep, riders who didn't even take part) whilst none of the Womens RR team got anything close to a bike like that.
There's a whole other arugment and discussion to be had on this and various other times British Cycling has neglected the Womens side of the sport.

Sky is a sponsor of British Cycling. They pay British Cycling X amount and get some jersey space and advertising links as a result. Team Sky and British Cycling are two separately controlled and run entities.

Back to Kennaugh. Why would Sky put money into the Giro Femme? Same reason they hire Italian riders. Sky Italia. Sky (21st Century Fox) has an Italian side and they have to promote that like they do any other part of their business. Supporting the Giro Femme, possibly the biggest womens stage race, is a no-brainer for a company already involved in cycling. Especially in a country as cycling mad as Italy, where believe it or not Womens Cycling ain't doing hald badly.
But Sky Italia has nothing to do with British Cycling, beyond the link via Sky being a sponsor of British Cycling.
Fantastically thought out and informed comment there Peter, you moron. (dangers of twitter, see Nibali threatening to sue earlier in the year). It's not sexist, you need to read a definition if you think that was sexist. It was just idiotic and not thought through or nessessary.

Bringing this back to Shane Sutton, luckily for Team Sky (not Sky or Sky Italia) Sutton has only been a "part-time adviser" since 2013. Pretty easy for them to cut their association there. This leaves Sky with just their sponsor association to British Cycling, although this is hardly a good federation to be associated with currently until things blow over (probably July as Olympics talk takes hold and everyone forgets).
This does give Peter Kennaugh some small glimpse of goodness in pointing out that Sky isn't all evil to women in their support of the Giro Femme. Although that's a slim hope and one i'm pretty certain wasn't intended.

Back to Sky's general lack of interest in Womens Cycling. Part of that will be they've got enough cycling funding via Team Sky who regularly win the TDF, which easily justifies their spending to them, and British Cycling who cover the rest of the non-cycling cycling fans come Olympics or Worlds. Adding a Womens Team doesn't give them much boost frankly.
Add to that i really struggle to see what female GB cyclists would join them. Armitstead ain't leaving Boels, Barnes probs wouldn't leave Canyon. I'd be shocked to see any of them leave Wiggle. It leaves very few who could make an impact on the british consiousness.

If it's Yates I'll hate everything. Maybe Swift or Thomas likely?

Wait, am I reading this article right?

Shock

- A 600m, yes that's 600 METRES, prologue up the last section of the KITZBÃœHELER HORN lol what?
- A MTF on the EDELWEISSSPITZE!?

Holy shit, this race will be insane. Edelweissspitze is the harder side of the Grossglockner plus a cobbled bit on the top - comes out at 21.4km at 8.4%, surely one of the hardest climbs in professional cycling anywhere ever. Even though it will only be a _____/ stage, it will still be carnage.

Bollocks. Dailymail using latest cycling scandals to perpetuate some conspiracy. British cyclists don't dope. They never did. They never will.
